the last of the ten is liz cheney. for more, chief national correspondent john king at the magic wall. she's facing a lot of opposition from allies of the former president. what's the map looking like for her tonight? >> anderson, we fill it in. we start to get some votes at the top of the hour. if you look at this map, you say liz cheney, famous name. her dad was the congressman from wyoming. she's been a congresswoman since 2016. if you look at her success, you think why is liz cheney in trouble? 40% in her first primary. 68% in her second. 73% two years ago. republicans in wyoming like liz cheney, right? well, they did until she decided to choose the truth over trump. this is the map she's really running against, anderson. donald trump getting 70% of the vote two years in wyoming. liz cheney needs a lot of democrats and a lot of independents to switch parties and vote in the republican primary. her supporters say they have seen a lot of that in recent days, but look at all this red. she is preparing to lose tonight.

liz cheney's had the courage to speak out to, tell the truth, we are dissent audacity to tell the truth, and there's just no place for that in donald trump's gop. a sad result. we certainly hoped that at some point the fever breaks, but the fever is not broken. donald trump still has an iron grip of in the republican party. >> congressman schiff, surely you understand if liz cheney begins to speak with a concession speech, we will go to her. if your committee's business should continue next year into the next congress, you now know that liz cheney will not be a member of that committee. what would that mean to the committee? >> well, her loss will be very considerable. it is our goal to finish our work the session. we intend to have more hearings in the fall, we intend to produce our report and our recommendations into as much as we can to act on those recommendations, but whether the committee continues or doesn't continue in her absence, it's a loss to the institution to have someone who i think is a true conservative, representative what the gop used to care about and believe in. but

you know liz cheney so well. is she doing the right thing in response to getting punished by republicans by taking on trump and certainly dangling the possibility of running against him? >> obviously, what's so remarkable is she knew she was throwing away her seat. that was the cost of doing business. i think it's incredibly commendable to see somebody actually risk their own political life for a greater cause. where do we go from here? we are talking about the future. the house is done. the question is, what can she do to actually hurt donald trump and not help him? i think there's a real question of whether running for president is going to be helpful. putting her on the ballot will be helpful. there's no chance she's going to win a primary. she knows that. liz cheney is not delusional. i like her because she's not delusional. she's fighting against the solutional people. does she run as an independent? it's unclear whether that is going to siphon away votes from donald trump or joe biden. if you are a republic

cheney has lost here that liz cheney has lost here that she disappears into the depths of political obscurity, he said. it is undoubtedly confirms donald trump as a kind of republican kingmaker showing he still wields huge influence within the movement and he still has huge loyalty among the republican rank and file who believe, largely believe, certainly here in the state of wyoming, this myth of a stolen election. but liz cheney suggested that the fight must go on, that those who believe in the principles of democracy and elections is underpinning the very freedoms that americans enjoy need to join the fight and she was clearly beginning to map out something larger, possibly, ithink, the hens were there that this may be the beginnings of an attempt to craft a presidential run for herself, possibly in 2024, maybe with the aim of winning that race but, if not, at least adding on the way in stopping donald trump. she said she would do everything in her power to stop donald trump ever getting near the oval office ever again. getting near the oval office ever again-— getting near the

liz cheney is not out here saying anything radical. she's saying the 2020 election was not stolen and the former president has shown that he poses a threat to our democracy. those are born out by the facts. there's evidence. and yet she is lauded as this heroic individual. and that should just not be the case. but that is just where we are in this country. >> and i want to get a sampling, the alaska races don't get enough attention times. it's a fascinating state. in wyoming, liz cheney, son of dick cheney, it's a famous name. lisa murkowski, her dad was in the senate before her. lisa murkowski is saying, yes, experience matters because i bring home the bacon. >> who can best deliver for alaska. that's what this race is really about. through my seniority, i get real results for our state. >> we know what washington, d.c., thinks about alaska. and after about 20 years in d.c., lisa murkowski think it is same way. nothing scares those d.c. political insiders more than the thought of a strong, independent alaskan leader in their ranks. >>

and so liz cheney is alone. and we are going to see, all of us, how the lindsey graham strategy plays out. tim miller is a writer at large from the bulwark and a former rnc spokesperson. mona charen is the policy editor for the bulwark and former speech writer from nancy reagan. they both join me now. first, let me just start with your response to this thesis, that they are embedded in the institutional interest of the republican party, as a conservative party, in a democracy, for democracy to continue. and that liz cheney understands this and, at some level, is doing something that she thinks adherence to the benefit of what we have come to think of the republican party. mona? >> i have a slightly different perception of liz cheney from you. >> right. >> i think that she is being far less concerned about republicans and the fate of the republican party, and she's really all about the fate of the country, recognizing that donald trump's descendants is a threat to our very democratic system, and therefore, she ha

i think that will help liz cheney's case. because right now, there is great concern that there are a number of candidates out there who simply are just too extreme for the states in which they are running. and again, we are not going to know that answer tonight. but we are going to find out in the fall. and i suspect there is going to be a growing movement, led by people like liz cheney, adam kinzinger, maybe peter meijer and others, who are standing up for the rule of law, constitutional order, and want this republican party to move in a different and better direction. i would estimate there were somewhere between 20 to 30% of republicans right now who want this party to move in a different direction, want to reject trump and trump-ism. but those numbers need to grow. >> yeah, and if they do, that they are remaining very quiet for now. caroline, in her concession speech, liz cheney said our work is far from over. so, what is our likely next move? and if she were to run for president in 2024, we don't know, she hasn't said sh

susan, another thing we have to talk about is liz cheney. you are the best person to talk about this because you have written several books about women in politics. i wonder when you think about who she is. she's vowing to fight on. what does success look like for liz cheney and how much can she impa given the fact that she is the face of the anti-trump movement in the republican party but also it is a lonely island of people willing to do what she is doing. susan: she lost the primary by 37 percentage points. that is a pretty stunning. number it is a message from republicans in wyoming she was not representing them. it is a sign of the hold the donald trump continues to hammer over the republican party and yet, she has emerged as person of stature on the january 6 committee p she has two men disability to raise money. she will do that to raise money for other causes if she wishes. she has indicated that she may run for president. and the chance of her running as an independent is less likely because that would probably help donald trump win

we haven't heard the last liz cheney. i'm not sure, though, that she will be an elected official, necessarily, given that she's lost her seat now. >> all right. and in alaska, we are learning that trump critic senator lisa murkowski will advance to the november election, and former republican governor sara palin, endorsed by trumm, is hoping to fill a vacant house seat. charlie, what is your reaction to what we know so far about these results in alaska? where do you think it's going? >> in the case of the senate race in alaska, i think there's a general well-positioned for senator murkowski but she didn't get 50% here. i think she goes into the general election as a favorite, and because of her centrist politics, center-right politics. alaska, being a republican- leaning state, i think she will be able to capture young republicans, and a significant number of independence and democrats for the day in the general election. the fact that there was a trump- endorsed challenger to her might have helped the individual during t
