you've got a democratic incumbent there, raphael warnock, running for a full term there this fall. again, normal midterm climate, biden's popularity is low, the economy is not in a great place. this would be a ripe pickup opportunity for republicans. but they've nominated herschel walker. herschel walker has had some stumbles on the campaign trail that's unnerved some republicans, there have been some revelations about his past. raises the question, is herschel walker's nomination in georgia going to cost republicans a seat they would normally win. pennsylvania had the primary there earlier this year. the trump-backed candidate, mehmet oz, won the nomination. john fedderman is the democratic candidate. this is a republican seat now, because pat toomey holds it. he's retiring. mehmet oz has not been polling well at all. on average, oz is trailing my more than eight points against john fedderman right now. this is georgia, on average, herschel walker is trailing warnock by four points right now. so you start to look at that map here, and again, pennsylvania, that could be, if democra

democratic senators like bernie sanders, elizabeth warren, raphael warnock and majority leader chuck schumer urged president biden to forgive more, while some centrists are arguing it might make inflation worse, what he's already doing so far. so joining us now to discuss this is business journalist mark stewart. thanks for being with us. basically let's start with what he is going to announce today. >> this is not going to be a situation where the president is going to say, send me your bills, we're going to shred them all up. >> unfortunately for me. >> unfortunately. for a lot of students unfortunately that is not the case. there is going to be a threshold. as you reported, as cnn has been reporting. it will basically -- in order to qualify, the borrower has to make less than $125,000, then $10,000 would be excused. there is obviously some discussion about larger sums to be included. that has not happened at this point. i think it is also significant to point out that student debt has been an issue long before the pandemic. this pause in payments was seen as some relief, but you l

warnock and her show walker, which i believe has a two point spread, well within the margin of error. is he gonna go down to atlanta? well, i think what you will see is that it will go wherever he is needed and wanted, and we know pennsylvania is home for the president. so it's very familiar territory to him, and he's always happy to go there. but the president is watching closely what's happening across the country, and what we know, with the support of congress, president biden has been able to get things done. and he will continue to remind people that, elections matter. with the support of congress, we've been able to get funding into our cities, with a support of congress, and with bipartisan support. we were able to sign some of the toughest gun legislation in the last 30 years, and the president is calling for more. an ban on assault weapons. so the president wants people who want to work with him to get things done on the behalf of the american people. if that means going to georgia or pennsylvania to the that, i'm sure we'll see more of him in many, many places. >> we will b

january of last year, in georgia, in a row enough, the forest african american united states senator, raphael warnock, and the first jewish senator from georgia, john ossoff, that was directly because of the grassroots organizations that are working on the ground, around voter education, some doing voter registration. some working out in georgia so much, but on those who happen to be rehabilitated, who paid their debt to society and can vote. as you noticed, in florida, people voted because they had voting cards, because they had been told they paid their dues. then the government came and said, they voted illegally and they put people who had already paid their debt back into jail. that is unconscionable, but some of these groups working on the ground we are helping to fund. we see only upside when these groups are fully funded in able to do the work that they are doing to make a difference in our nation to all people. >> martin, can i ask you about this week's big news? president biden announcing he was canceling some student debt. it's death a disproportionately effects communities of colo

he is behind in the polls from senator raphael warnock. in ohio, vance has been struggling a lot. just yesterday, as mcconnell was making those comments, the super pac aligned with him invested over $30 million into ads going into the fall. that's a lot of money going into ohio, a state that donald trump won by nine points just two years ago. and so what you see around the country is, look, it is before labor day, a lot of people are still tuning in figuring out, a lot of the advertising hasn't started, we'll see where this goes, but republicans and senate races not seeing the kinds of leads they would want, especially when you see president biden's approval ratings still even with everything that has happened, democrats very excited about in the last couple of weeks in the 30s. >> isaac, lots going to happen between now and those midterms, thanks so much. >>> joining me now, to discuss not just the upcoming midterms but a whole host of issue, republican congressman from michigan fred upton. also on the energy and commerce committee. good to have you on, sir. thank you for taking

warnock could keep his seat, mark kelly, and fetterman, and do you think this plays, does the ira, does all of this play a role or does gas prices and i ask you because you are the transportation sec and you have to think about gas prices, how much of this is sort of the lofty proposition of a new future, vis-a-vis the biden administration, and how much of this is just about people saying oh, my gas is $3 a gallon, not $6? >> i think people are looking around at how their lives are different, how they're shaped by forces around the world, and political decisions, made in washington, that's one of the reasons why gas prices is something that's on everybody's mind. obviously, you know, gas prices aren't controlled by any individual policy maker in washington, but they're a part of what it is like to live in the american economy, and they hold, you know, americans hold those in charge responsible for the overall conditions, and to some extent, we've leaned into, that the president took a lot of steps to help stabilize gas price, not that, you know, he controls them, but things like releasi
