>> the second one, we are still planning artemis to -- artemis two in 2024 and artemis three and -- in 2025. >> then in terms of temperature effects, because we have a combination of solid propellant in the boosters and liquid propellant in the core stage, the core stage really has no significant impact due to temperature other than what we call the boil off. that is, you cause the propellant to go from liquid to gas and you are not able to feed the engines. it's part of that. there is essentially no effect associated with that because it is the -- as we go from the summer into the fall, you load the cryo. then you go and ensure that hank is full -- the tank is full but for you go -- before you go. the lower the bulk temperature of the propellant, the lower performance you get. we know that with the performance characteristics of these particular boosters, they have been tested through the full range, the summer months you get the most performance out of the solids. the performance is slightly lower in the fall. when we looked at performance numbers and they were eye watering in terms

it will be the second attempt to get artemis 1 off the ground. monday's plan liftoff had to be scrub because of an engine issue nashville officials. say a change in fueling procedures seems to have solved the problem then we're still waiting to use the southern term. they have looked at it from izzard to gizzard. the only thing it's going to get in the way. it does is summertime in florida the rainstorms the lightning storms. but they're still looking. so again, we're still waiting right now to see what the final decision is going to be on whether or not artemis 1 will take off today as of right now. the nasa team is recommending they delay the next time it would likely happen would be on monday tomorrow is off the table, but it isn't a very exciting mission when it does happen and on abc 7 at 7 this week. i got the chance to talk more about the historic mission with nasa astronaut jessica mere so this first mission artemis 1 is a big milestone because it is starting off a whole program of artemis missions and it is the final step. it is our test

so, what can we expect with artemis ii? >> apollo had a similar thing. the first flight was a test -- some unmanned flights and test of the vehicle and it was five or six flights before they landed on the moon. nasa will try to do that in three flights. this is the first nobody is on board. it will spend about a month in orbit around the moon. the second flight will be similar only astronauts on board. they'll just do a some orbits around the moon. then flight three they hope to actually land on the moon but they have to get the lander going, which space x won that contract. so that's a big pole in the tent if you will for that artemis iii mission. >> 2025 isn't that far away to do our first landing with artemis iii on the moon and nasa wants to land the first woman and first person of color. and they want to land near the south pole of the moon. that is where there were craters of ice that were found. can you talk to us about how feasible first of all it is to actually land on the lunar south pole and why ice is such an important resource? >> sure. to p

the artemis programme aims to return humans to the moon in 2025. our space correspondent jonathan amos has the latest from the kennedy space center. well, it has been another day, another disappointment. we arrived here at the kennedy space center very early, just before dawn, and they had to build a rocket first of all with almost 3 million litres of liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen. and the oxygen went in the rocket very nicely indeed. it was the hydrogen that was the problem. they started to pump it and almost immediately they got an alarm, there was a leak. and they traced that to the base of the rocket. they tried all sorts of fixes, all sorts of solutions. one of the things they tried to do was just warm the rocket up a little bit, see if that would make a difference to the seal, but that didn't work. and, then, a few hours later, engineers had no choice, really, but to report to the launch director here, charlie blackwell thompson, that she should scrub for the day, as they call it. and of course the big question now is when can we go again

nasa scrubs at second try of watching artemis one moon rocket. a leak in with the hydrogen tanks found hours before today's launch window open. artemis one is one of the world's most powerful rockets at nasa has ever built at least for the first mission and unwritten unmanned trial number sending astronauts back to the moon and then hopefully to mars. jon is live in florida. cracks either rich, nasa engineers discovered the leak or an 8-inch fuel line meets the exterior of the rockets. the fuel line delivers very cold liquid hydrogen fuel to the main fuel tank of the rocket. they did several things they thought might help repair the leak from the sword the feeling back up the leak reappeared again. so those efforts to repair the leak were unsuccessful. the sls rocket and orion crew capsule are still sitting on launch pad 39b is nasa officials determine the date of their next launch attempt for the closest potential launch window is open on monday and tuesday. those are contingent on being able to repair the rocket while it is still on the launchp

here's the artemis mission manager describing the options for repairing the rocket. the first option was to simply remake the umbilical pad, hoping that the soft goods would seal the leak up but our confidence level, given the size of the leak that we saw today, was fairly low that that would solve the problem. the team lead towards a removal and replacement of the soft goods in the quick disconnect, and the options were basically do it at the pad or do it back in the vehicle assembly building. either of those options do not preserve our ability to fly before the end of this launch period which expires on the 6th. leroy chiao is a former nasa astronaut and commander of the international space station. he says technical problems like this are nothing new. well, this brings me back to my first days and nasa in the early 1990s when we were having all kind of hydrogen leakage issues with the space shuttle and it seemed we would never be able to launch shuttles again. we had delay after delay on different vehicles but we finally got that solved and i am sure the technical

that's why that artemis launch was actually canceled. and let's take a look at what's going to happen with florida. the cone of uncertainty showing it making landfall along the southern peninsula of florida. it is expected to weekend after turning into a category 4 storm face of the warm gulf of mexico waters. but by the time it starts to make its track on land into florida, it is going to weaken into a category 2 hurricane then eventually becoming a tropical depression. by the time it makes its way into georgia where they could see anywhere from about 3 foot storm surge and 6 inches of rain for the state of florida alone. so certainly going to keep an eye on that from the kron for weather center. but one thing that we can't really see out there over the east and berkeley, much of the city. in fact, it's already enveloped in that marine layer temperatures 50's and 60's around the san francisco peninsula with 70's 80's. as you make your way inland, conquered and livermore, 82 degrees. but downtown san francisco cooling down to 59 degrees

it was the second attempt to launch the artemis moon rocket. let's get more on this development that has come through in the last few minutes from our science editor rebecca morelle who is at the kennedy space center for us. yes, we havejust heard kennedy space center for us. yes, we have just heard the flight director of this mission has said it is time to scrub. they have been plagued with problems since fuelling began with a rocket a few hours ago, theissue began with a rocket a few hours ago, the issue was a hydrogen leak. the rocket is filled with super cold hydrogen and oxygen and the problem was they just couldn't stop hydrogen and oxygen and the problem was theyjust couldn't stop it leaking out and that is an issue. they tried, they tried again, they tried a third time to troubleshoot the problem but they could not find a workaround for this. the issue is they only have a two hour window to launch, it starts a little bit later on during today but there wasn't enough time to catch up and so it is a no—go. this rocket standing here look
