. > >> first alert meteorologist dan meteorologist darren peck is in for paul. darren, you've been following the air quality. are we expecting more smoke? what about the conditions for those firefighters? >> air quality here should get r get better and for the last couple of days the conditions for the firefighters have been really unique. i want to show you why as you take a look. its look. it's about 12 miles i away. everything else, all of the clouds, there was rain falling in the sierra today. ts today. there's leftovers still from what was once a tropical storm adding some humidity. the humidity. these are unique conditions that are likely more helpful than not. it's quieting the behavior of the fire a little bit. we didn't see the huge pyrocumulus clouds. let's show you that live view. lake tahoe, it's progressive, whichd not gottenaggressive today. thee is still a lot of smoke coming off the fire. not nearly as much. most importantly for us, the winds are taking it the other way. we're going to start pulling in more of the onshore flow of the lower elevat

meteorologist darren peck is here to explain what that means for our weather and the drought. drought. >> you know how we got into this this problem the last two winters, as you said they were h were both la nina. it tends to deliver below average precipitation in california. first the overview. we have gotten so good at visualizing these things and understanding them better. these are surface temperatures across the globe. in blue, you are below average. there is a big pool of below average temperatures along the equator. that is the signature of la nina. we don't just look at this in a static image. over the last three months, the pattern, this goes back to june. each one of these is a weeks worth of time. this is a time l. time lapse. watch out here toward the midsection of the equator, in the pacific. that i, is important, because that is the part of the pacific that would reshape weather patterns as we go into the fall, in such a way that it tends to bring california less rain. here is the overview. what does la ninao nina do in terms of the storm track? it tends to push

first alert meteorologist darren peck will give us a preview of what is to come. >> let's get right to the details. beneficial, widespread. widespread rain. it is coming sunday and monday. it will be a two day event and this forecast is not budged at all. your take away on this, a couple of things things to be aware of. it will be enough that roadways will ge. get wet. you will have slick streets to deal with. there will will probably be ponding of water, especially in gutters that have not been cleared from the long months of no rain. there could be isolated thunders isolated thunderstorms on monday monday and there could be gusty winds saturday and again on mon. on monday. just to show you how the storm is coming together, that picture we just looked at, you think, there is a storm coming? yeah, right there. by sunday it has now wound itself up into a tight system off the coast. that is the perfect location for us to be able to get the best of the benefits from this. that gives us rain without giving us the dry, offse dry, offshore wind. that is sunday morning. that is when it really

time for a look at our forecast with darren darren peck, in for paul. >> looking out towards the east that flag, right there, just moving around enough, and it's getting pushed from the west to the east, telling us that is an onshore breeze. it's subtle, but but it's remained consistent during this heat wave and has saved the city. because you can get 200 degrees in san francisc. san francisco. didn't have to do do it in this heat wave, but so many other places have good let's get into the details. san jose broke the record again, to. again, today. well into the low. low 100s. so, here's the good news on this, tomorrow. we will do the comparison. this is thursday's map for today, where we look at the heat risk. the deeper you are into shades of rd and purple the higher your risk of heat -related impacts. i just just wanted you to see today, see the comparison with tomorrow. i'm going to take it from thursday, and we'll advance advance it into friday, and the shades get a lot better. we really start to pare down the red and purple and push those into the moderate category. we e not com

the mosquito fire pouring out smoke and we will show you closely as we have darren peck tracking the impact on air quality. that picture is unbelievable. >> really eye-popping things coming off the fire. let's focus on the behavior which tells us about the challenge in fighting the fire. there is the column of smoke and look above it. this is a time lapse from the first alert network. i want you to watch this column of smoke. columns of smoke are hitting the clouds up here, it is really weird to see that but it tells us something about the wind which were moving so fast that the winds were interacting with a strong updraft coming out the fire today developing a cloud above it with columns of smoke bursting through the clouds. if the winds are that strong there that usually translates to the ground with erratic conditions, that's part of the reason why battling the fire was a different story today and there is a second plume of smoke coming off of that. that has been there and this one started today. so, this has been a very active day on the mosquito fire. the information is still co

. > >> darren peck is in for paul n tonight. it is one thing after . things are finally starting to l off. now the fire could impact air quality. >> it likely will. let's get some context. the size of the cloud was impressive. katie have katie have that in the story. here's another perspective. this perspective. this from space. getting the perspective not only not only for how large the fire has grown and how much smoke it put out and how the smoke is spreading. we will get to that in the second. i will use one or latest tools. is called pyro cast. is a detailed look at the fire. you can see where the footprint is. you see where it was in relation to tahoe. what s the fiery history? >> we can see where the fire is burning. there is not a lot of history. there is a fire, the ralston fire. i will get rid of the mosquito fire so you can see, back in 2006, that fire is the only thing there that has already burned. there is a lot of room for the fire to run. the the smoke is going to have wide impacts. the question is how muh will we breathe? it does not l

darren peck is here here with our first alert forecast and it is fall. >> it is, since 6:03 this eveni. this evening. it felt like it. this was a classic late september day. i will show you where those numbers are in relation to average. that is the the set up for how much warmer we will be by saturday. we will be 10 to 12 degrees above this. today was wonderful. let's show you what the numbers felt like as we take a look from the top of the salesforce tower looking to the north. mainly 80s. 82 in san jose. san francisco in the mid-70s and the comparison on where you are, above or below average, will only range by a couple of degrees. that was today. tomorrow is warmer. saturday is noticeably warmer. i i will jump ahead to saturday. a a comparison for how far above average those numbers will be. 11 degrees warmer than average for concord. 8 in oakland. to show you what that means for daytime highs, you will be in the 90s for the valley. a hot day, but not excessive. we are t are not talking about a heat wave. we are nowhere near records. nowhere near the heat of a week and a half ago,

. >>> first alert meteorologist darren peck. in the sierra that is not fog. >> it is not fog at all, the scene of the mosquito fire taking off creating stunning imagery, like this time-lapse. this is from the fire you can see the plume of smoke rising into those clouds, it looks weird, looks like a ufo part of the fire and then the plumes of smoke forcing the cloud upward, you will rarely see this scenario and it tells you about the fast wind in the upper levels of the atmosphere that created this cloud. that is also important for fighting the fire on the ground because you have erratic wind. this situation makes it difficult to attack the fire from the air. in terms of the actual column of smoke coming off the mosquito fire there is relatively good news because the wind as strong as they are in the upper levels are blowing this the other way. so we do not have issues with smoke at home this is harmless clouds and marine layer which is building over the west side of the city with much more tonight you can see from this vantage p

another development, darren peck joins us now to fill fill us in on what's going on in in tahoe. >> yeah. i think this will catch catch a lot of people by surprise because it just happened in the last three hourt i want to show you what the skies looked like. this is a time lapse of the last hour from from one of the cameras that sits up on the northwest shore of lake tahoe. you can actually see the lake out there. all smo. didn't look like that at 11:00 this morning but at 12:30, the mosquito fire really took off. e are air quality sensors that have gone into hazardous. and from reports on the scene, it is is already raining ash. you will will sigh what just took place.e are clouds from thunderstorms, that's the plume of smoke coming coming off the mosquito fire. it fire. it started yesterday. it was already in the news. maybe you heard about it. in the heat of this afternoon, and that's really the driving factor here, the elevated temperatures from this heat wave, that is one of the effects. now, the smoke from from there in tahoe is bad for today. can concern here at home would be how
