the irs has a criminal investigation division. i worked with them when i was a new federal prosecutor. i think very highly of them, exceedingly good. they're not part of the justice department, obviously. they're in the treasury department. but they have law enforcement authority and law enforcement powers. they can do investigations in conjunction with the u.s. attorney's office. like the southern district of new york that apparently received a referral. i don't think any of this is news to them. i presume they knew about a lot of it, that they have ongoing information or even investigations. whether or not they charge a criminal case is a completely different question, as we alluded to earlier, it's proof beyond a reasonable doubt. when you wonder why the attorney general could file a lawsuit and the federal law enforcement authorities are still waiting or investigating or pondering, it's that difference between proving a civil case by a preponderance of the evidence, a lower standard, and a criminal case, with proof beyond a re
