the special election in new york pat ryan won his special election in a critical swing district when he was down in the polls by campaigning and making abortion a central issue. kansas, a conservative state, votes to protect abortion rights. when you ask registered voters what issue is at the top of the list and you see inflation and economy and 74% of americans say the economy is in a bad state and you have independents thinking republicans would do a better job handling the economy, that points to an extraordinary set of challenges for democrats trying to keep the house and senate. >> let's talk about the abortion issue. 84% of the voters say the economy is their top issue. only 62% say abortion. when you go deeper into the poll and look at some of the cross tabs on this, what our poll is showing is that the pro-life people are more motivated on the abortion issue to vote in the midterms than the pro-choice voters are. >> that hasn't been the case this summer. >> it hasn't, but this is september. the further you get away from the dobbs decision and closer to the midterms, the less

there was the new york upstate race where abortion appeared to have helped the democrat pat ryan win that upset upstate. talk to us about what you are seeing specifically in this data right now, how abortion is changing everything. >> it's really remarkable. as you mentioned, the kansas results were a surprise. i think even to people like me who have studied these numbers for decades. we set out to figure out why. as you said, what we saw was a huge surge in women registering to vote after dobbs when you compared to before. kansas, as you said, 70% of the new registrants were women. in the new york 19 special election, women accounted for 58% of the early votes cast there. that's remarkable. >> what other states -- where is the real impact? presumably in 2020, obviously, suburban women in particular that came out in droves and supported joe biden. republicans felt like they were winning back some of the suburbs with the inflation and economic challenges. all of a sudden, it seems like those folks in particular are really coming out in droves again based on this issue, the feeling tha

it comes as we're learning two trump white house lawyers pat cipollone and pat philbin set to appear in front of a grand jury tomorrow. an oath keeper has been arrested and charged in connection with the attack. let me bring in ryan riley and correspondent julia ainsley. we have been waiting for the sentence to come down because it could be significant. it could be the longest sentence yet for any defendant we've seen on january 6th and we've heard some i think striking that thob ster, as determined by a jury of his peers, lied on the stand during his trial. he was telling what justice department calls a per post strus story, alleging that he was the one under attack and a rogue police officer invited him to fight with him. it was a bogus story as anyone sitting in the courtroom could tell including the jury during that time, but that was the story he was trying to sell. that might have consequences here because, of course, there's this thing known as a trial penalty. it's easier to plead guilty because you end up with a shorter sentence. this is an individual who chose to go trial a
