you heard tim cook say it is essential a lot. "it is essential." it is essential to our health and essential to our safety. i think it is smart marketing. emily: mark, when it comes to the technology, we are seeing more significant upgrades than we saw last year, but some people might still look at this phone and say it looks like basically the same phone. but those technological upgrades that look into any ship, better battery life, are so hard to do. can you talk to us about the significance of the inside changes that we can't see? mark: if you look at the jump from 13 to the 14, not talking about the pro models, i can safely tell you that there is no reason for you to upgrade, there is no faster processor, the battery life is about the same and that camera enhancements going from the 13 to the 14 are not that significant. but when you get to the pro models, there are some changes. that new notch cut out, they turned something that was an ugly portion of the iphone into something that looks awesome, right, changing that knowledge into a softer ar

why has apple under tim cook been so drawn to china? look, i think it's a similar story for many producers, china has become the place of the world. they had a very good day in clusters of infrastructure for manufacturing. and so in that sense, it was a no brainer. you had ultimately, you know, in many their books gone in a lot of people, the relying on all i would need company to set up factories in china. so again, apple's not on the out of course, a very high profile company, the biggest company they lay wildly popular as you know. and so not to follow the path, but many others i've done and send to very much operational chain supply chain focused and china provided all those things that he looked for in terms of proficiency. right? obviously, we know a lot about the supply chain issues that came out of the pandemic. and the wes reliance on chinese production. where is the china apple relationship today? look, i think all are foreign businesses in china are struggling to something. thank cobit, as you know, yard report mentioned that

when you talked to tim cook and you weren't too far from here with the release of the new iphone, 14? >> yeah, 14. neil: and big demand for the expensive versions, so people were plunking that down. is there a disconnect between what's happening with technology stocks and what's happening in the case of apple to its products? well received and is well paid for. >> there might be a disconnect between how the stocks are performing and consumer sentiment because you saw it yours, there were line-ups. first time we've seen it in three years, but i think there's a disconnect because stock markets, wall street is reacting to the treasury yields. we're looking at the highest now in ten years n a decade, at 3.7. you heard from the federal reserve and jay powell who says i'm very serious about raising interest rates to clamp down on inflation, kill inflation -- neil: and this hits technology stocks disproportionately -- >> of course. neil: it is what it is, and it's market lore that rates go up, technology stocks go down. you talk to people who say this is overdone because rates are still goin

the event comes as apple faces with ceo tim cook calls a cocktail of headwinds. one of them, production delays caused by covid shutdowns over in china. our technology correspondent, what is apple doing to offset these production delays? >> so what apple has done is shifted production around china to where these lockdowns are happening to prioritize iphone production. that is their most profitable product. what suffers is max and ipads. but basically they've been able to figure out the g code to get around these lockdowns and around these heavier restrictions in order to continue making the iphone so they can get it out in time. >> four new iphone models, what are they going to be, what is new about them? >> for the first time, the regular baseline model is going to come in that big size. that's what people are reporting right now. and then the pro line, the most expensive one, it is going to have more screen space. the little notch at the top of your iphone is going to get squished down into little sensors that just look like a hole punch almost in the screen so

paul: apple's tim cook at the unveiling of a new lineup of devices including the iphone, airpods and a watch geared toward outdoor sports. there were few surprises, except a strategy of keeping some prices stable despite hot inflation. we get details from technology editor tom giles. keeping the prices down, what is the logic? tom: they want to see consumers getting out there despite the inflation that is resulting in higher prices of just about everything else bit they want to send the message you can still get a good, high-end apple product at the same price you could in recent years. what is interesting is, they are basically putting more high-end features into the more expensive devices, hoping you will upgrade. maybe if you were looking to get a new phone, you would be more willing to gravitate to one of the higher-end devices if you have been on the lower end in recent years. it is just one way apple can keep its margins up and get people buying those higher-end devices. shery: telus of -- tell us about incremental changes, i understand there is a new sos feature? tom: that is

max: for years, investors and fans of apple have been waiting to see if ceo tim cook can release a product to match the iphone. the next big thing could be in your pocket already. i'm talking about these little things, airpods. third-party estimates suggest apple sold around 120 million pairs last year, taking in about $20 billion. the reason for this success also gets to the heart of why apple is so controversial. partly it's a credit to the headphones themselves, but only partly. it was easy to forget that when these were released, reviewers hated them. they did not sound great, got lost easily, not durable, environmentally questionable. they had one thing going for them, they were easy to set up with the iphone. this was not on accident. it was a combination of coke's plan to expand the iphone to a collection of products. the extras do not do much without the phone and the phone does not work particularly well without them. in 2016 when apple announced airpods the company also made everyone else's headphones worse by getting rid of the jack. normal headphones need an adapter. the compan
