obviously, addressing unsheltered homelessness is top of mind for all san franciscans. enhancing and improving the temporary emergency services we offer like shelter to help ensure that people don't get stuck in programs, but are on a pathway through the crisis of homelessness. increasing permanent supportive housing outcomes. that means placing more people, developing or acquiring more housing and also ensuring that people remain successfully and stabilized housed in that housing and of course, preventing people from becoming homeless in the first place. this is one of the most challenging parts of the work that we do in terms of modeling outcomes and predicting success but it's important to prevent homeless whenever possible through flexible assistance and legal assistance and a strategies and one of the strategic plan progress i'm excited about the integrated approach we have taken approach to. individual was participating in the design of the plan and conducting much of the engagement in partnership with the department including surveys and focus groups, input sessi

i'm also a long time san franciscans. as an adult i lived in several rent controlled apartments and i just learned a lot. one thing i did notice living in rent control apartments, over the years maintenance became a bigger issue. there is a lot of-it is hard to afford some of the repairs, there was conflict between the repairs tenants needed that the landlords could afford and also on the prnl level i notice you can get stuck because becomes (inaudible) market rate is increasing so high and you just can't pick up and move. what got me on living in the rent controlled apartments i (inaudible) was a fire when i was working out of town on a tour and so that sort of where this story starts because i needed to find a home. looking at market rates and this is in 2014 and buying something looked compelling when i was looking at market rates going up as well. the building 942-944 fell street spoke to me qu i saw it. it was beautiful. there were two units so i felt i could live in one is anderant out the other. it was-they were co

raised in the jordan park neighborhood, john, a fifth generation san franciscan and ultimately went to the university of san jose where he got his master's degree in urban planning. he was always drawn to public service and finding ways to make his community better. john joined the puc in 2011 and first as manager and then manager of policy affairs and director of initiatives and partnerships. john has always been known for his kindness and will always go out of his way to help. i can't tell you how many calls i got from john while he was on vacation and always going above and beyond. when the pandemic hit, the chief of staff for the covid command center, john was an obvious choice. he was hand picked to run the command center during his first month of operation during a time that was so unclear and under so much uncertainty. when i thought he would run away, he never did and this was an example of who john is. john has been known to get along with everyone. we know that's not always easy when dealing with city politics and politicians. you would be hard pressed to find someone in san

i married a third generation san franciscan. i am a nurse by training and was a pediatric critical care nurse. my first job was in san francisco at uc san francisco. i did practice nursing for almost 20 years before founding center for bioethics and culture. i can't believe it but it's been 20 years. time flies. >> definitely. what caused you to take that step? >> yeah. well, i love medicine, science, technology and certainly working in pediatric critical care nursing at major university hospitals, we were always on the cutting edge of a technology, new treatment, new therapy. but i was also interested in the ethics of all the advancements, not just because we can do something doesn't always mean we should do something so i went to graduate school and studied bioethics. >> i noticed the advanced degree. >> it was part of my work that founded the center that i now run. >> the center is an educational nonprofit 501c3 in california. i mention it is internationally known and this is the fact, you have testified at the un, have spoke
