i've been speaking with heidi beedle, a reporter with the colorado times recorder. i began by asking her how the community there is coping with this tragedy. people in colorado springs are pretty devastated, the lgbtq+ community, we came together for the vigil event at the church, where jared polis spoke and there was an outpouring of grief, and just dismay at this tragedy. it's a very close—knit community in colorado springs and club q more than being a bar and nightclub was a social hubn in very conservative el paso county colorado, and it has had a tremendous impact on everyone within the community. as a member of the lgbtq community, how is this for you on a personal level? it's awful, to be quite honest. as a journalist who covers these things, i'm also a trans person, and within the lgbtq+ community, everybody kinda of knows everyone and everybody knows me as the queer reporter and i'm one of the people who covers a lot of these issues and it's very difficult. i know, when i got to the vigil, a big part of the crowd that showed up today — it was overcapaci

natalie chuck in colorado springs, please keep safe. joining me now is jim kavanaugh, retired special agent in charge of the atf and an msnbc terrorism analyst. jim, thank you for joining us. police are calling this a hate attack. they have brought in the fbi. what is the standard procedure for how this gets handled from this point out? >> we'll, if they have a lot of upfront evidence, sam, it is a hate attack. for example, if the killer was rolling out racial epithets, writing on his clothing, or a confessed immediately after being apprehended, or a lot of social media postings about hate, then the fbi will take a bigger role because it will also be a federal crime. a hate crime is a federal crime. if that is not evident, they will have to dig that out first, but they will be working hand in glove with colorado springs detectives, processing the scene, interviewing all of the witnesses inside the club, anybody who might have a statement they watched it unfold, the first responding officers, the patriots who subdue the suspect, anyone w

it's the law in colorado. and law enforcement agencies in appropriate circumstances should take advantage of it. and utilize the law. that's my view of it. i don't run the law enforcement agency, but that would be my advice to law enforcement agencies. i would caution against an assumption that the si circumstances of this case would lead to application of the red flag law. we don't know that. i would caution any conclusion either way or not. i as the district attorney indicated, hopefully there will be a time when there can be a specific discussion about any prior interaction with the, with law enforcement and i think it would those circumstances would cause one to be able to make commentary about potential application of the red flag law but i think it's premature to do so now. you're assuming that there's credible evidence of all that as opposed to someone reporting it and the prosecutor had evidence of that. i would not make assumption to that nature. >> i would just echo the mayor's stance on the red flag
