this netflix is the streamer in. you have shows like "you" and "grey's anatomy" at risk as well as others. joining me now is alex kantrowitz alex, is this the savior or silver bullet that solves netflix's growth problems? >> i don't think it is you heard jay powell yesterday we are going through a fundamental issue with tech problems unlike amazon, it is not a platform the company is commissioning the entertainment appearing on that service. so you don't have user generated content to build on top of it. netflix was worth more than disney at some point disney can build a streaming platform and it did. now you see this shake out netflix versus disney. instead of netflix in a different category i don't think ads is the savior. we are revaluing tech companies and it is tough for netflix. >> alex, this should lead -- you are giving consumers more of an option let's say i pay for the netflix service right now, but i'm okay with ads do i downgrade my subscription or if i don't have netflix, do i think about getting one bec

netflix warns that this would be a slow ramp-up of its ad business, but once netflix with ads is at scale, we'll have to see if its ad inventory can steal share from hulu, peacock, paramount plus, or even youtube. and melissa, while i'm here, other big advertising news more big advertisers are pausing spending on twitter. this according to a new report out from "the wall street journal" naming general motors, audi, mondelez, pfizer we connected with general mills. they confirmed and told us, quote, leconte to monitor this new direction and evaluate our marketing spend. melissa? >> i have two questions for you, julia. how should we view ad dollars that go on to either an internet platform like a twitter and ad-supported streaming service like a netflix are those usually the same sorts of dollars is there competition there, do you think? >> there is usually i think a different category between twitter and what's happening on the ad-supported streaming i think that netflix is hoping to draw a share from traditional television, right, from traditional ad dollars, or from even old-fashioned ad

i dispute that analysis of netflix. netflix is profitable. has been both on a net income basis and a cash flow basis. the bear story on netflix was this thing is never going to throw off cash it's throwing off cash and ebita to the tune in the last 12 months, i think $6 billion of ebita. it has a very different streaming position right now i happen to green with barry dillard that netflix has already won, given that it doesn't have to worry about the drag on a massive drag on profitability of legacy declines. i do think that because of the push and pull that streaming remits for companies that have declining legacy businesses, it gets a lot harder to figure out these issues because streaming right now isn't profitable for them for disney it ended up being surprisingly more unprofitable than last quarter than many people thought. when that hits profitability, i think many people are still not understanding and i think when it comes to wlornlhether or noty need to make a massive additional outlay to buy comcast from hulu, it complicates that an

jessica, what is the primary thesis behind netflix? >> i mean, for us, we initiated coverage or reinstated coverage today. and, we see a lot of value from here numbers have come down to a reasonable level across the street, and we think there are two areas where the company can really beat numbers and have tremendous upside. and that is the advertising video and demand platform and the second thing is password sharing. and we are super, super bullish on the advertising opportunity as the company says, they're going to crawl, walk, and then run. so they're starting on their broadcast tier, which is really small. that's the tier that you can't download on and you get one stream and they'll learn a lot from that we think there's massive advertiser demand. remember, these are subs that they're reaching outside of the linear universe. these are big cord cutters or people who are watching streaming, number one. and there's such intense interest from advertisers. so we think as they start to roll out to the standard and premium tiers, there's

netflix won that game, so everybody's chasing netflix's tail by the way, reed hastings, the most recent earnings call is like stop looking at the total number of subs it's not what's going to drive the stock anymore. focus on the profitability of getting the subs as i said paradigm shift look, you don't talk about individual names so i wanted to get through that. but josh made a good point about these comps for consumers, discretionary areas of the economy and how it all plays into the same story. >> i think josh made a good point a lot of these big names there's a cyclical shift and obviously a secular shift as well whether it's cloud, e-computing all of it is not going to be immune but i also think we have had so much pull forward to all this demand and so much more crowded competition in a lot of these places you can't just make a slam dunk secular case of things like cloud and e-commerce. i put in the category, you know, broadly of many broken leaders they need a bit of time to repair and the market that makes it more challenging to break out to new highs if you don't have the leade

it is the advantage that netflix has. so is meta. i thought there was show more discipline than they have let on. emily: you have been covering technology for two decades. do you think we are seeing a real inflection point here? is there further to fall? how long does it take before this turns around? mark: two thoughts. we have a negative inflection here. tech is bigger than it was during the last cycle of 2008 and 2009 with the great financial crisis. those were the same thing. it is much bigger. it is more cyclical than it was back then. our firm, we are the overall advertising, it will decline into the single digits. the digital advertising will be flat up 5%. another inflection point i am interested in will have to come back to, that is ai. what meta and alphabet are doing, they are spending on artificial intelligence and machine learning. bill ready has been very thoughtful on this topic. i am fascinated with what will come out of this. the market is looking at the ai investment and the capital expenditures. google and meta pro

if you put the same revenue multiple that netflix gets, it is worth $45 per share. that is essentially the spread between hundred dollars it trades at today and what we are saying it is worth. there's nothing about disney's streaming business that won't be as valuable as netflix. the problem is for disney and a lot of other companies, they are unwilling to accept losses in the current regime. that's fine. for the logical implication of that is to say disney's streaming business, which does over $20 million revenue is worth nothing is a bit extreme to me. kriti: let's bring in a u.s. media analyst with bloomberg intelligence. i think there is a lot that the market is hoping that bob eicher can do. maybe we can start with what he can do in the short term and may be what might be a bit of a stretch for him to fix, given some structural issues that are going on with disney. >> amber, i think the number one order of business for bob iger is reinstated ceo is to really take a hard look at the streaming business. streaming losses is really the number one headache for disne

netflix has a 10 to 12 year head start on disney. so they were hitting their wall earlier this year. with disney plus, they are expanding into new markets. we saw them go into 100 million homes this summer and right now, they are hitting a steady cadence of content. we've seen some big hit series come out. we will see much more coming onto the platform once they release black panther and avatar . those will come on the disney plus platform. that tells us there's a lot of momentum for this company going forward. the question has been the profitability question. not just for disney but all the players in the streaming space. emily: the netflix co-ceo, reed hastings, said they are looking at sports rights. how big a threat would that be to espn? geetha: espn spends about $9 billion to $10 billion every year on sports rights. i'm not sure netflix is going to be able to make that big of a bet. i think they are looking at second-tier sports. they look at a few different things. one thing they are worried about is sports rights have a huge

netflix has not had a brilliant year. it has been stalling and its share price has come down significantly. disney has fallen almost in lockstep with that. manus: and of course he is famed for doing those monster deals with pixar and marvel, isn't he? let's see what magic he could speckle across the kingdom. let's get to a bit of crypto. we know the contagion is around $3 billion in terms of unsecured creditors. that's not the end of the story in terms of fallout for ftx. it is pervasive. alex: yes, lots of different stakeholders here. there are the bigger funds, you have holdings who had investment in ftx, and then just your run-of-the-mill punter might have savings or investments, recto investments in the ftx exchange. all of these are likely to be affected and unfortunately it looks like those sort of retail investors are likely to be the last in the food chain to get their piece of the pie. it's not looking good for these companies. the fear is if they have huge losses at ftx, some of the big companies have to sell ho
