. >>> let's get more on this from our congressional correspondent rachel scott. rachel, break down where things stand in the race for overall control of the senate. >> well, george, it is the final countdown and there are 35 senate seats in play. you see them here, highlighted on this map. republicans only need to net one seat by the end of election night in order to take back the majority. now, of course, we have gone through all of those races. we have identified the most competitive races, the toss-ups, you see them highlighted here on what we're calling the battleground zone. of course, fivethirtyeight has been tracking the odds for both parties' chances of winning the senate and it is a 50/50 split. a complete dead heat. this is the closest projection we've seen and it comes just one week out from election day. if republicans are able to win in a critical state like georgia, take a look, their odds of flipping the senate go from 50% to 73%, george. >> and we've heard from eva that both donald trump and barack obama, two former presidents, will be in pennsylv

congressional correspondent rachel scott starts us off. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: george, good morning. this is far from the red wave republicans were hoping for, but they have officially clinched a narrow majority in the house. votes are still being counted across the country. here is where things stand as of this morning. democrats were able to hang on to majority in the senate. republicans won a key california house race overnight giving them the 218 seats they needed for the majority. this will be a challenge for both parties. president biden congratulating republicans on that victory but he is now entering a new and more challenging phase of his presidency. a divided government. republicans have made it clear they want to investigate everything from his administration to even his family. for republicans, this is one of the slimmest majorities in decades. that will be a challenge for any republican leader. kevin mccarthy has taken the first step to become the next speaker of the house, but he will need the support from almost

our congressional correspondent rachel scott is on capitol hill with the latest. rachel, good morning. >> reporter: whit, good morning. with just days to go, this is down to the wire. a nationwide rail strike would be catastrophic. we're talking about a devastating blow to the economy. by one estimate this could cost consumers and businesses up to $2 billion a day. not to mention that it would freeze rail lines for approximately 7 million travelers and commuters. this is exactly why president biden has asked congress to step in to help avoid a rail strike. he summoned congressional leaders to the white house, and they want to move quickly. in a few hours the house is expected to take up legislation that would impose a tentative agreement that president biden and his administration helped negotiate back in september. it does raise wages, but for some unions, it doesn't address their biggest outstanding issue which is enough paid sick time. lawmakers agree and they're scrambling to try and pass another bill that would address some of those concerns and there is grow
