cnn's oren liebermann is at pentagon for us. oren, officials say the balloon doesn't currently seem to present a threat, but why is the pentagon also preceding with caution on it? >> reporter: so the pentagon has said for now that it will not be shooting this down, because of the risks from two different perspectives, first there's the risk to what's below, blow something up at 60,000 feet and that could be scattered over quite a large debris field, so there is a risk to people and property. but they are keeping a very close eye on it. and are continuously monitoring this. as it makes its way across frankly much of the united states. like a scenic tour from the north west over montana to where it is spotted over the last hour or so, asheville, north carolina, charlotte, north carolina, some sightings there. so it is making its way on the east/southeast track. the other reason it hasn't been taken down yet, because they don't believe it has surveillance or intelligence gathering capabilities above and beyond chinese spy satellite

cnn's ed lavandera is in oklahoma. describe the scene around you and how the community is trying to start to attempt to recover. >> reporter: it's been a day of cleanup for residents in norman, oklahoma, where the national weather service says it was an ef-2 tornado that ripped through this area. the damage is rather immense, the areas hit in this neighborhood. the sights are rather stunning. if you look high in the tree, about 30 feet up, you see a giant piece of plywood that was ripped off someone's rooftop. here on the ground, the residents are continuing the cleanup. as you walk around, you can get a sense of the magnitude of the force of this storm. remember, jake, this was a line of storms that started in the texas panhandle and started blowing intensely across the state over several hours. there were wind gusts in a little town called memphis, texas, that recorded wind of 114 miles per hour. that's strong hurricane-type wind. i thought there would be many more people without power. they've been very quick to res
