we are going to invest in the long term health of east palestine to help east palestine thrive. we're gonna make norfolk southern a safer railroad. absolutely. >> you heard some skeptical questions earlier from a gentleman there with you who noted that he felt that people were told it was clear to go back to their homes, just of the trains could be running again. you said earlier, it was a down payment, $7 million norfolk southern gonna give to make sure the citizens, the impacted residents of east palestine will be okay. $7 million. at the same time, we should note, norfolk southern spent to -- 7.5 billion dollars in stock buyback benefiting shareholders, your company is also spent tens of millions of dollars in the last two decades lobbying congress and various administrations to loosen regulations so that you can increase your profits well decreasing the safety for individuals like those in the room you're with. so, how can you respond to those credibly who say, you value the bottom line, your profits, more than you value the lives of the citizens whose community your trains

the citizens of east palestine. i've talked to the mayor of all of that quite a bit, we are committed to east palestine. we've done a couple of things. we've committed a recovery fund of 1 million dollars, and that is a down payment. talk to the mayor about putting together some community leaders where that can best be deployed to invest in the future of east palestine and help it thrive. i'm talking to the mayor yesterday in the hallway and mayor conway mentioned he had been up into the early hours of the morning, tuesday morning, with community leaders about some ideas that norfolk southern can support the long term health of this community. we are going to sit down sometime next week and talk through that. we are also looking for immediate action, where we can health. it's heartbreaking to hear the story of folks canceling tournaments here. so what i have done is i have hired a employee who is a resident of this community. he was one of our craft union employees, and i asked him to work directly for me. i said th

ah, we're joined today by ben ratner, a resident and business owner in east palestine. ohio. julie iraq is a reporter at the lever, who has covered the immediate aftermath of the disaster. she joins us from brooklyn, new york, san car, as senior vice president for programs at earth justice, a non profit environmental law organization. he is in washington dc. and of course, you can be part of today's conversation through our youtube chat, send us your questions and comments, and i'll put them directly to our guests. so much to discuss here been i want to start by sharing with our audience brief timeline of the events since the disaster happened on february. 3rd, we saw the train derail near east palestine, ohio. on february 6th crews began the controlled release of the chemical, as many still reported smelling the chemicals in the air and experiencing headaches, as well as burning sensations in their throats. and on february 8, they were told they could return. but since then, people have pets, for example, including cats and birds, have fallen ill since the derailment with so

when are you going to go to east palestine? >> well, i am planning to go. and our folks were on the ground from the first hours. i do want to stress that the ntsb needs to be able to do its work independently. but when i go, the focus is going to be on action. look, i was mayor of my hometown for eight years. we dealt with a lot of disasters, natural and human. >> jesse: do you think anybody in east palestine is saying, honey, we're fine. pete says he's dealt with disasters in south bend before. the only thing pete ever had on his plate was fixing potholes and somehow he screwed that up, too. pete is just going to east palestine for a little p.r. stunt, he's not going to drink the water. maybe he will be evian. he doesn't know if the water is clean because he is not the one cleaning it. the e.p.a. is now saying that's a job for the rail company. just like they handled all the water tests. now the rail company is being ordered to clean up the contaminated soil and water. it's the same sleazy rail company that was caught covering up the contaminated soil the

that's why we do not expect fema will come to east palestine. however, to make sure that if in the future, if in the future fema is ever needed, we want to preserve our rights to be able to ask them for help. so, to make sure that if fema is ever needed in the future to help residents in regard to this crash we're going to preemptively file a document with fema to preserve our rights in case we need their assistance in the future. we believe that the railroad should continue to pay and we're going to insist that they pay. whatever damages have been caused, the railroad is responsible for those damages. we're filing this paper with fema, just in case in the future we need that. say, for example, the railroad stops paying for a reason, we're still going to go after the railroad, but we want to make sure there will be support for people if that support does in fact stop from the railroad. let me move now to hhs. we know that the science indicates that this water is safe, the air is safe. but we also know very understandably that residents of east p

east palestine resident ben ratner joining us now to weigh in. and ben, i understand this week that you took some news cameras down close to the wreck. what did you physically experience? >> yeah, thank you for having me, griff. thursday i went down there, or actual local trash collector is in the area where the cleanup crew is stationed and taking over his area and he was really open to having the news cameras there telling his story. so we went down as close as we could to the tracks, he owns right to the tracks and there are several areas of standing water with slick irridescent chemicals on them. thousands of feet of oil-covered rocks against the tracks. this hasn't been cleaned up properly putting profit over safety. they haphazardly cleaned it up and went back to work. griff: and did you physically have a reaction to any of that? >> yeah, yeah. and so that was something that, you know, thinking that they're telling us to be back home and safe, there's several hourses in that area, after being down there for just a few minutes, we felt stron

here we have clearly a crisis in east palestine. he took ten days before he made any public comment on it. it will be nearly three weeks until he goes to that area. here you have -- what is the old woody allen saying? 90% of success is showing up. in is somebody that wants to be president. he's behind on everything in his job in terms of the supply chain crisis, he took a maternity leigh and then last summer, the airline industry would improve by the time we got the holidays. we saw the disaster over christmas with millions stranded. now this situation in east palestine. a working class town. hundreds of people live below the poverty line. right? the household median income is like $45,000. below the national avenue. their property values are plummeting and they're scared and sick and they want answers. they're mia. >> martha: you'd think president biden would say i gave you this job for a reason. get down there. let me know when it's a good time for me to come in all of these situations. never let a good crisis go to waste. even fr

this terrible derailment in east palestine is truly terrible. that said, it is not the first train wreck in recent memory for the good people of ohio. for them not even the first recent train wreck involving norfolk southern. in october, in early october a norfolk southern freight fright train crashed in sandusky, ohio reportedly because of issues with the engine. a month later on november 6th another train hauling crash derailed along the ohio river near steubenville, ohio. the first one in sandusky, early october the local paper just yesterday reported congratulations, you can now drive north through the underpass where that wreck happened back in october, but the southbound lane is still closed. and city officials say there is no telling when that might open again. this is months later after the much smaller derailment that didn't make national news at all. that sort of scale of impact is worth keeping in mind when it comes to the epic disaster in east palestine. the spill there was toxic industrial chemicals. the environmental and health imp
