I painstakingly hand scrubbed 149 loud local claps, 2 pops, 23 LOUD yells, and 3 loud whistles from inconsiderate folks who were clapping, yelling, and wistling right near our microphones.
Tracks 33 (starting 24 seconds in), 34, 35, 36 are patched from the following existing archive.org recording: https://archive.org/details/um2004-06-11.mk4minime.flac16; Source: (FOB, DFC) Schoeps MK4 > KC5 > CMC6 (ORTF) > Lunatec V2 > Apogee Mini-Me > Tascam DA-P1; Transfer: Panasonic 3700 > Soundforge 6.0 (resample and fades) > CDWav > FLAC; Taped by Carrington Crawford. Transferred by Mike Niven. I did my patch from the non-remastered version, because when I took a look at the "remastered" version I didn't like the way the wave files looked with crushed peaks.
Original recording, DAT transfer to WAV (5/18/2012), mastering & tracking (5/30/2015 + 10/27/2015), plus additional patches from existing archive.org recording 10/28/2015 all done by Scott Bernstein
If you just want to stream/listen to/download the moe. set, I've sliced out just those tracks and posted them here:
NOTE: This is just an extract of moe.'s setbreak takeover from Umphrey's McGee's set from this night. The entire performance is available here: https://archive.org/details/um2004-06-11.tlm170.flac16
Taper notes:
After giving lots and lots of love to many of my favorite bands in the jamband world -- especially moe., I decided for BARN169 it was time to give some love to another killer jamband I've been seeing for a very long time -- Umphrey's McGee. I originally heard of them thanks to their association with moe. and I got to see them for the first time at the 2003 moe.down. Fast forward nearly a year and I find myself at the 2004 edition of the Bonnaroo music festival. moe. was scheduled to play the main stage (early) on Sunday 6/13 as well as an unannounced acoustic set on the Sonic Stage on Saturday 6/12. But I guess they got to town a little early and decided to repay their friends in Umphrey's with a full-band performance during Umphrey's setbreak (UM had done the same, performing during moe.'s setbreak during their late night set the previous year).
My attendance at this set and the existence of this recording can totally be attributed to fellow moe.-ron Jenn Ritchie, who I had run into at the festival earlier in the day and pulled me aside to tell me I HAD to go see the Umphrey's late night set because there would be some moe. sit ins -- she had gotten the inside info right from the band members themselves! I'm not sure what I'd been planning to do that night before I got the tip-off from Jenn (maybe Vida Blue, Page Mcconnell from Phish's side project?), but given the news, there was now no question where I needed to be for the late night sets.
At the time I was only slightly familiar with UM's music, but this was a dive right into the deep end of their music. They played a MARATHON show here, which -- if you include the moe. setbreak, is nearly 4 hours and 15 minutes long. If you subtract the 45 (or so) minutes of moe.'s set, you're still talking about a show that's 3 1/2 hours! All of the songs that have become "classics" in the modern era are here -- Wife Soup, Nothing Too Fancy, Bright Lights Big City, Ocean Billy, The Triple Wide, Bridgeless, Hurt Bird Bath, In The Kitchen, 40's Theme, Nemo, JaJunk, Miss Tinkle's Overture, etc. -- in splendidly jamming versions -- exactly the way you'd expect a band ecstatic to be playing the plum late night slot and about to have a huge explosion into the wider world should sound!
Without the foreknowledge about the moe. sit-in, there's no way I would have dedicated so much of my late night at Bonnaroo to this band. So, was it worth it? HELL YEAH! Even disregarding the hours and hours of killer Umphrey's McGee music I got to hear, the moe. "sit-in" was even better than I could ever have imagined. One by one the members of moe. came onstage to join Umphrey's, and then one-by-one the Umphrey's guys filtered off leaving moe. staging a "setbreak takeover" from UM (even moe.'s sound and lighting techs at the time took their positions during moe.'s set). The resulting 45 minutes of "just moe." was far and away the best music I heard at Bonnaroo this entire weekend -- and even thinking about it now (and of course while listening back to it), I can still feel the pure joy and electricity moe. put out from the stage on this night. moe. is not always known for making great use of their time -- but this 45 minute chunk of music (plus a few minutes leading into and out of the Umphrey's sets where they were jamming together) was pure bliss from start to finish. I mean, just look at the tracking above -- in that 45 minutes of time, they played *3* songs, and they were ON FIRE. This is a textbook example of what a sit-in should be -- a spectacularly jamming "Recreational Chemistry", a huge "Brent Black" with Travis from String Cheese Incident adding extra percussion, and then a cover of Metallica's "Enter Sandman" (which they would, interestingly enough, perform acoustically the following day on the Sonic Stage) with UM's manager Vince Iwenski handling the vocals while dressed up (fake beard and all) to look like James Hetfield. Of course when they returned, Umphrey's pulled out an impromptu (not on the setlist) Metallica cover of their own -- "And Justice For All".
At this point, it's probably worth noting how difficult it was to pull this recording off at all! First off, after spending all day at Bonnaroo seeing Ani DiFranco, String Cheese Incident, and Dave Matthews And Friends (with Trey Anastasio and Tony Hall) on other stages, I was pretty exhausted. But beyond that, my taping buddy Curtis I did not want to set up back by the soundboard where the tapers usually camp out -- we wanted to be up close where it sounded best. We got a little space on someone's tarp, but at this point as part of a LONG day & night there were a LOT of people who were a MESS -- drunk, and on all sorts of varied substances. And there were (sorry to make this graphic) seemed to be a lot of people throwing up from partying way -- including somone who barfed right next to us right onto the tarp we were set up on. UGH! There was a small river of barf flowing around us and my taping gear at this point!!! :(
Beyond all of that, this marathon set was after a long day of other music. At the time, my gear required a LOT of power -- especially the Apogee A>D converter/pre-amp which I was using. I had to bring a 15 pound lead acid battery with me to the festival just to power the Apogee and another smaller one to power the DAT recorder! I had 2 of these 15 pound batteries with me at the festival -- but as you might understand, I only carried one inside to save my arms and back from having to carry 30 pounds of batteries into the show; since by my calculations one battery should have been enough power to cover everything I could potentially see that day and night. Sure enough, in "Jajunk" the last song before the encore, my battery gave out. And my own internal batteries gave out as well. I could have trekked all the way out to the car in some far away parking lot (which could easily take 30 minutes round trip), grabbed another 15 pound battery, and then come back in to finish the recording and see the end of the set, but I decided it was time to head back to the hotel, get some sleep, and recharge.
Thanks to the an alternative (complete) circulating audience recording posted here on the Live Music Archive, I am now able to patch in add the last few songs of the set.
Anyway, I hope that more than 10 years later you enjoy my recording of this super classic, incredibly jamming piece of history for both Umphrey's McGee and moe.!
