You can test a pistol for practical reliability by dry firing it, by firing single shots or by running just a mag or two of one type of ammunition.
Reliability testing must be done thoroughly, especially for any gun you might want to carry or stage for defense. I recommend 200+ rounds of mixed training ammo and at least 50 rounds of your chosen defensive ammo before relying on any firearm for life & death duty.
That said, I don’t personally stage or carry ANY of my privately made guns. My gun building hobby guns are for fun… but, they still need to work! I happened to (unexpectedly) catch a failure to extract with a new build while recording for content and it provided a nice opportunity to hit this topic.
