</c><00:00:08.296><c>piece </c><00:00:08.298><c>of  </c><00:00:08.300><c>history </c><00:00:08.302><c>but </c><00:00:08.304><c>that's </c><00:00:08.306><c>broad </c><00:00:08.308><c>of </c><00:00:08.310><c>course </c><00:00:08.312><c>very  </c><00:00:08.314><c>important </c><00:00:08.316><c>to </c><00:00:08.318><c>our </c><00:00:08.320><c>nation </c><00:00:08.322><c>but </c><00:00:08.324><c>you </c><00:00:08.326><c>get </c><00:00:08.328><c>a  </c><00:00:08.330><c>nice </c><00:00:08.332><c>chunk </c><00:00:08.334><c>of </c><00:00:08.336><c>it </c><00:00:08.338><c>right </c><00:00:08.340><c>here </c><00:00:08.342><c>between </c><00:00:08.344><c>the  </c><00:00:08.346><c>Underground </c><00:00:08.348><c>Railroad </c><00:00:08.350><c>history </c><00:00:08.352><c>and </c><00:00:08.354><c>also  </c><00:00:08.356><c>the </c><00:00:08.358><c>legacy </c><00:00:08.360><c>of </c><00:00:08.362><c>this </c><00:00:08.364><c>family </c><00:00:08.904><c>used </c><00:00:08.906><c>to </c><00:00:08.908><c>buy  </c><00:00:08.910><c>the </c><00:00:08.912><c>Robinsons </c><00:00:08.914><c>nobody </c><00:00:08.916><c>had </c><00:00:09.156><c>there </c><00:00:09.158><c>was </c><00:00:09.160><c>a </c><00:00:09.162><c>hope </c><00:00:09.164><c>that  </c><00:00:09.166><c>one </c><00:00:09.168><c>day </c><00:00:09.170><c>visitors </c><00:00:09.172><c>would </c><00:00:09.174><c>be </c><00:00:09.176><c>able </c><00:00:09.178><c>to </c><00:00:09.180><c>come  </c><00:00:09.182><c>to </c><00:00:09.184><c>the </c><00:00:09.186><c>sites </c><00:00:09.188><c>and </c><00:00:09.190><c>learn </c><00:00:09.192><c>about </c><00:00:09.194><c>the </c><00:00:09.196><c>family  </c><00:00:09.198><c>and </c><00:00:09.200><c>learn </c><00:00:09.202><c>about </c><00:00:09.204><c>their </c><00:00:09.206><c>history </c><00:00:09.208><c>and </c><00:00:09.210><c>really  </c><00:00:09.212><c>take </c><00:00:09.214><c>away </c><00:00:09.216><c>something </c><00:00:09.218><c>special </c><00:00:09.220><c>from </c><00:00:09.222><c>the  </c><00:00:09.224><c>history </c><00:00:09.226><c>of </c><00:00:09.228><c>the </c><00:00:09.230><c>Robinson </c><00:00:09.232><c>family  </c><00:00:09.234><c>that's </c><00:00:09.236><c>what's </c><00:00:09.238><c>really </c><00:00:09.240><c>unique </c><00:00:09.242><c>about </c><00:00:09.244><c>about  </c><00:00:09.246><c>roku's </c><00:00:09.248><c>story </c><00:00:09.250><c>uh </c><00:00:09.252><c>is </c><00:00:09.296><c>freedom </c><00:00:09.298><c>for </c><00:00:09.300><c>the </c><00:00:09.302><c>first </c><00:00:09.304><c>time </c><00:00:09.306><c>and </c><00:00:09.308><c>also </c><00:00:09.310><c>the  </c><00:00:09.312><c>aspect </c><00:00:09.314><c>of </c><00:00:09.316><c>folks </c><00:00:09.318><c>that </c><00:00:09.320><c>are </c><00:00:09.322><c>black </c><00:00:09.324><c>providers  </c><00:00:09.326><c>living </c><00:00:09.328><c>in </c><00:00:09.330><c>Vermont </c><00:00:09.332><c>through </c><00:00:09.334><c>the </c><00:00:09.336><c>19th  </c><00:00:09.338><c>century </c><00:00:09.340><c>and </c><00:00:09.342><c>the </c><00:00:09.344><c>challenges </c><00:00:09.346><c>and </c><00:00:09.348><c>successes  </c><00:00:09.350><c>that </c><00:00:09.380><c>the </c><00:00:09.382><c>histories </c><00:00:09.384><c>are </c><00:00:09.386><c>connected </c><00:00:09.388><c>with </c><00:00:09.390><c>the  </c><00:00:09.392><c>Abolitionist ropey is a National Historic Landmark it  is one of the best documented  Underground Railroad sites in the  country  it is on 90 Acres it has a number of  historic outbuildings a historic house  it can really help to tell the  agricultural history of Vermont and we  have an incredible modern education  center that has an exhibit that talks  about the freedom Seekers that came here  to rokby on the Underground Railroad and  the work of the abolitionists here in  Vermont we are on a Fall Foliage tour  learning about four different states and  this really I think solidifies a lot of  what Vermont was about you have the  Robinson family here at Roka beat that  was four generations how often do you  find one institution that has that but  also they were part of the Underground  Railroad so I we like coming here  because it's a condensed piece of  history but that's broad of course very  important to our nation but you get a  nice chunk of it right here between the  Underground Railroad history and also  the legacy of this family which spans  all the way from the 1800s into 1960  where do you find that under 1 roof in  one family in the U.S so one reason is  that they've they were able to preserve  it here so I loved this museum for that  reason what we have in these four  generations is you can look at  agriculture  you can look at Art you can look at  abolition I think people are really  taken by the the range of how much is in  this we I know we have 90 Acres but in  this relatively small space how much is  held  we also have seasonal exhibit space  which allows us to tell multiple stories  of the family that lived here from 1793  until 1961 there was a Robinson who  lived and worked on this site and we  have a lot of their possessions still in  our collection so we can use this space  to tell their story so let your eyes get  used to the yeah to the light  so as you can see this is the original  main room of the house it was two rooms  up two rooms down the walk-in fireplace  was what they used originally of course  and in the winter this was certain you  know the favorite room so they they made  everything here in originally they made  candles you can see the molds over there  they certainly cooked here they made  bread they dried apples  um for eating later and pumpkins and and  such so everything in the house all of  the artifacts are things that were  either  owned by the Robinsons or used to buy  the Robinsons nobody had to bring in  anything to make it you know a period  correct kind of situation because they  never threw anything away  I think one of the important things with  the Robinsons is that family members did  recognize the importance of the family  to history and they recognized the  Underground Railroad was an important  part of the family's history they  recognized that Roland Evans Robinson  who was third generation was an  important literary figure and an artist  and his daughter was an important artist  and they saved all of their items and  they even labeled some of the items so  we know where they came from and who  purchased them or who gave them to the  family and I think there was a hope that  one day visitors would be able to come  to the sites and learn about the family  and learn about their history and really  take away something special from the  history of the Robinson family  that's what's really unique about about  roku's story uh is that we can tell all  these different aspects of black history  in Vermont and  the aspects of freedom and folks finding  freedom for the first time and also the  aspect of folks that are black providers  living in Vermont through the 19th  century and the challenges and successes  that they were finding coming from the  south we have history y'all have history  too the histories are connected with the  Abolitionist Movement the slavery  movement it's interesting to hear this  part of it from from another perspective  your docents are wonderful they're very  knowledgeable they are they certainly  know their their stories and the  background is so interesting especially  the Quaker background and how it they  were so influenced by their religion  that they were very Fierce abolitionists  so yes it's uh it's wonderful the the  buildings uh being able to see it I feel  like I've walked back in time  people should come because we have a  real varied experience for them  um we have got a wonderful historical  exhibit in in the museum where you see  actual documentation that people had and  tell stories about actual Freedom  Seekers who came here about work that  was done we have the farm and and that  is so important we have the history of  agriculture in this state right here and  it's beautiful we have 90 Acres that you  can walk around we have Trails we you  have a for children we have a storybook  walk that Tucker does we change those  three times a year and then of course we  have the historic house which is not a  mansion it's it's a house that people  actually lived in and you can come and  see that and see the way people really  did live see the way a house the way a  family really change their environment  and changed their their home over the  years we all do it we all make changes  in our houses and this is a living  structure from 1790s to the 1960s really  so you know there's there's
