there are three sectors the public the private and the nonprofit and it's that third sector that we're here to talk about today my guest for today's show are ty muldoon who is the ceo and executive director of girls inc wayne county and then later in the show joining me will be guy guthrie representing gateway hunger relief center but starting us off we've got time muldoon with us ty welcome to the third sector thanks for having me tomorrow well thank you so much for giving myself and our viewers some of your time today we're very excited to hear all about girls inc and um first obviously we should we should note that um you are newly the ceo and executive director of girls inc or rather recently and very excited to uh to have you there well thank you it's like coming home i am excited to be back i was a girls inc girl for ever ago uh and then i worked here about 12 years ago for four years and they were four of my favorite years my professional life so i'm glad to be back in a new role in a new building uh with some new girls new faces and uh just doing some of the same work that i did then i think it's so exciting that you can say you were a girls ain't girl and now you're the ceo and executive director of girls inc um which leads us to all kinds of things that align with why that is um so fitting uh for this organization but why don't we just before we go into all that start with just uh let folks know um when did girls think come to wayne county how long has it been here and and and how does it look today now that it didn't or has it changed to today's time yeah so girls think nationally has been around actually since i believe 1864 i might have my date wrong oh my god i'm following the civil war for women so um the concept of girls inc has been around forever it was not always called girls inc it's been the girls club and couple variations of that um in the late 60s early 70s i don't have my exact date um some women in wayne county realize that there was a need for girls in our area to have a safe place to learn how to grow and develop and be strong leaders in our community and then in the 90s it went from girls club to girls incorporated and for those that need the the brief history lesson it used to be the boys club and the girls club and what was girls club became girls incorporated so we've been girls inc for um well over a couple decades now but still doing similar things and our mission has stayed very similar um but our vision and what we're offering to girls has definitely changed since 1864 in the 1970s well let's hope that you know with with the change in time so so then we flex and and change accordingly so um take us a little bit more into what that mission is and what your vision um is today yeah so the mission is to inspire all girls to be strong smart and bold so give them skills to strengthen mentally physically emotionally um and just make them well-rounded individuals who will grow up to be leaders and mentors and do some big and amazing things and the vision is just that the girls are given the tools to be successful in life to overcome whatever's thrown their way to manage a world where um things aren't always fair so i think it's a vision that any female can get behind but uh we have a lot of male allies as well and male supporters that that see that that's important for the girls in their lives especially in wayne county too yeah real realism real life um so tell us a little bit about um and i know it's hard to look down the road but but what are the goals with that mission and that vision for say the next year or so or whatever that timeline might be for you guys maybe it's only six months yeah so i have some amazing staff amazing board members and we have an amazing community and so one of my personal goals is to expand and either rebuild or strengthen some partnerships with other youth serving organizations in our community as well as starting to look outside of wayne county we realize that the need is great not just right here in richmond that the need is great in centerville um union county fayette county so starting to have some of those conversations that i have some wild goals and visions in mind and i'm looking for ways to partner to make those come to life but definitely start expanding our services growing some of the programs that are being offered in the schools and just expand what we're doing and find ways to help the other non-profits and other youth serving organizations in our community thrive as well right well if anyone listening out there wants to partner with you guys you know how to we'll we'll tell our audience how they can connect with girls inc and obviously get to you to support some of your lofty goals uh hopefully not lofty that you can bring to fruition those are the kind of things that you need you got to dream big you got to reach reach high to to achieve those things so we've put the phone number up on the screen for our viewers to see so that's one way that you can connect with girls inc you can just give them a call you mentioned your staff your great staff a few times and so um why don't you give us an overview of what your staff looks like yeah so i'm the ceo executive director and i have a wonderful leadership staff so we have a director of operations a program manager assistant program manager and executive assistant and beyond that we have staff that offer programming in the schools and on site we have a 1 to 15 girl ratio in our programming so that includes some volunteers some program staff we take high school interns as well so our program staff is a wonderful mix of adults young adults and professionals that have been trained in a variety of programming how if people want to get involved they want to volunteer or they want to learn more um uh i guess or get just get involved what's the best way for them to do that yeah so it depends on what type of volunteering they're looking for but all of our contact information is on our website they're also welcome to stop by the center and talk to us we do ask that any volunteer that's spending time with our girls or is on site when girls are on site pass a background check so somebody's looking for time to help make the outside of our center beautiful you know we take anybody that's willing to pull weeds down to doing homework help so uh it just depends on what that person's individual needs are and what they're looking for to get out of a volunteer experience but we have a lot of opportunities that we can be flexible with but they can contact me directly they can go the website they can stop by they can send us a letter we'll call them back well good to know good to know so tell us a little bit about how girls inc is funded okay so we have a really diverse spending portfolio which is wonderful to say as a ceo we receive grants through places like the united way our local banks as well as larger organizations like lilly we also take membership costs that help offset that fee a little bit and private and individual donors so wide wide variety of ways to support us yes yes indeed so we've heard a lot of the um the wonderful things that girls inc does um so i guess one one part before i ask my second part of my question is would you be able to estimate about how many girls you serve in wayne county um ballpark maybe a year so ballpark would be upwards of 600 kids i will say kids because we do offer programming to male students as well in the schools but for our summer program we had around 95 and we are right now at 95 registrations and expected to just we're getting more registrations every day um so i'm hoping that that number is going to increase by next year and these are in our covent world you know these are are lower numbers than expected so i'm anticipating as things settle down a little bit that those numbers are just going to go up yeah yeah well hopefully anyone watching today will um will take this in and maybe maybe that'll drive them to uh to to to join um or get their parent to take them to join rather so what is what is your biggest impact in the community or girls inc's biggest impact i'd say it's directly on the girls i mean we work really hard at providing quality mentorship and research back evidence-based programming that really helps the girls to thrive and so it could be one girl it could be 90 girls but as living breathing proof that the program works it really does empower girls and having girls or youth in general that feel confident that have new opportunities open to them really go on to be successful and amazing community members so we have programs that encourage the girls to volunteer to get back to learn more about their community uh programs that help strengthen their financial knowledge you know i i still look at some of the financials and like okay i'm glad that i had some knowledge and skills going into this so it just i think our biggest impact is the next generation you know i again i'm living breathing proof that it works and i'm confident that the girls that come through our program will turn out much better than when they started through our doors yeah so with a few minutes left in our time on the opposite end of um you know knowing all the good you do and the positive what would it be what would our community be like what would happen if girls inc ceased to exist if we didn't have it here in wayne county what a sad thought to have right um i can say that we do have amazing other opportunities for kids but i know that we aren't all reaching every child in wayne county and so that would be 600 more kids that didn't get a caring adult in their life that didn't get the support the mentorship the encouragement that they needed and so it's kind of heartbreaking to think that those kids then wouldn't have a snack after school or during summer breakfast snack and lunch they wouldn't get their doors open to new opportunities field trips um stem exploration no and so i just think about the kids that wouldn't be as successful as an adult that weren't taught coping skills or um that there are people in their lives that really care what happens to them so it makes me want to cry a little to think about not being here to not have this opportunity for other girls my nieces both participate in the program and so i'm envisioning what their lives might be like they would still be amazing wonderful girls but it's going to be that much better for them because they're here for the program right right so as we wrap up our time today tell me what um what brings you the most joy in what you do every day the girls hands down i'm having a bad day or there's something that i'm struggling with i get up out of my chair and i go spend some time in the programming and my office overlooks the gym and so sometimes just standing up and watching that they're just being kids they are playing they are having fun they're learning while they're doing it um just makes me happy and i've explained it as it is pure and utter chaos some days and people that have never worked in youth service can look at me a little crazy from like i thrive in that chaos because that means that those girls are having fun that they're enjoying being here so uh it's it's definitely the girls and the handmade crafts that they bring me you know i can't describe what some of these things are that show up in my office but i love every single one of them oh well um you know you are in the right place there is no question and girls inc is lucky to have you leading them and it's just thank you so much for giving us some time today so thank you tai for representing girls ing and for joining me today and sharing with our community the great work that you all do and the impact you have on our our on our excuse me on our young ladies so um we appreciate it well thank you for giving me an opportunity to talk about it anytime anytime when we come back guy guthrie from gateway hunger relief will be joining me stay with me [Music] welcome back to the third sector guy guthrie from gateway hunger relief center has joined me guy thank you so much for coming and joining on being on the third sector uh my pleasure and that of our group too well thank you so much so um guy is let's just talk mainly you're the grant writer that is your your your primary role with gateway hunger relief center which is a really big job um but you're able to give us lots of other information because obviously we aren't going to write a grant today so if you would why don't you tell our our viewers uh when did gateway get started and and where have you gone from the beginning well gateway started out in 2006 as an offshoot a mission of the gateway church of richmond which is up on route 227 and they initially started it in the building thinking well okay we'll have a little room in the back little room in the back starts to grow and after a while the storage of stuff for the little room in the back ended up being in the back end of the sanctuary and then it ended up in the middle of the sanctuary and about that point they figured out they needed a little more a bigger place to do things with so in 2018 process of movement started to take us to 715 sheraton avenue or sheraton street it's the old commons lumber building which is where we started to rent our our operations out there it's been a wonderful place because in addition to the the old retail section which is where the bulk of the distribution occurs we also have the area where they used to store all of the lumber and that's where we put our extras so it's been allowing us the opportunity to grow to meet the needs that the community has has brought to us and so yeah that that happened about 2019 in the fall 2019 we moved in there ever since okay and uh we anticipate staying there a walk because it's been able to serve us well yeah so um tell us uh uh the mission and the vision of the organization yeah the the the very very beginning the mission was was expressed in a very simple way i mean there are a lot of words to it but in simple terms it means anyone who comes to us in need gets served we will not turn away anyone who comes to us with need now the question of need is consistently being described as the food is security that's what we're good at but we do have aspects of other areas of such as paper goods soaps and things like that but for the most part if someone walks up here tells us that there's a need for food we will service them in some fashion that's been our mission from the beginning continues to be our mission and it's the biggest way that we judge how well we're doing because i i'm comfortable in saying and feel great in being able to say that so far we have not had an opportunity or need to turn anyone away well that's wonderful we focus on people in wayne county because that's where we let the world know about our services and and union county in the same book vein but people come to us from randolph county or bayad or other areas we don't turn them away well the community is very fortunate to have you guys i know that you serve a lot of different um areas within the community so i know you guys in addition to um and i don't know which is it tuesdays and fridays that are the days that you guys are thursdays and fridays of every week from 10 to 12. two hours and i say two hours and what i really mean is uh two hours plus what we have left over to continue serving until the line's done because more than more times than not we can we have a line still there at the 12 o'clock time frame right and there's like time in a moment ago we don't turn people away we just keep right on going until everyone gets what they need yeah and then um uh you go you all did start an uh an and i can't speak sorry you started another part of your program which was serving seniors uh well we were housebound right so it's a big delivery institutional living is probably the quickest way of describing it um what we discovered was several years ago that if there are two things that needed to be done one was to serve people couldn't get to us and number two we found that if we focus what we serve with in other words the the people we serve it tends to give them more of what they need and it's less bulky on our part which is a polite way of saying we don't have to deal with either storing or or getting a lot of just plain excess that's a way of saying it right so by by being able to target our audience we've been able to create uh answers for them at the same time not overdoing the buying and selling you know the the the size of our facility so we have let's see last week it was five five facilities that we take stuff too the managers at the facilities hand out a list of what people in the building want okay that list is then sent to us we fill the boxes and then drop the boxes off uh sometimes to the individuals sometimes to a local room like a a community room where either in some fashion the local right facility uh delivers within the building itself um those are the two big ones we do have some others but that that tends to go up and down according to what the people the situation would need and we normally run between 300 to 400 people a week for that right well that's a lot of people in our community it is they take it we we've had to move we used to do a pickup truck uh those were the early days now it's a big box truck yes times have changed you guys have gotten bigger um so um tell our audience today because a lot of times when we interview folks or talk to organizations we have the head of the organization or um uh you're you're our first grant writer so why don't you give us an overview of the staff you're the substitute today but yes so the the head person but i'll let you take it as you give the overview of the staff spend a little bit under the weather so the the gateway is run by a lady named linda white and linda unfortunately is fighting pneumonia she's winning but she hasn't won so she wasn't able to make it so i had the fun opportunity to fill in for her um so linda and linda runs it and then she has with her a manager for the building and then she uh that would be like the distribution side of things uh-huh and then there's another manager or gal that is the warehouse manager so she has there's the total of three ladies that run the program and then there's one lady who helps out in the we're just going to call it the numbers stuff the this you know the administrative work right so it's a poor lady group and then beyond that most distribution days as i commented which is tuesday and friday there's somewhere around 20 to 25 volunteers okay that come in they come from a variety of sources believe it or not our biggest area of recruitment are the clients who have been there in the past and come back to give us a hand and help us that's wonderful that really is um that's that's terrific news um tell us a bit um as we uh have a few you know a few few more minutes left in our time together excuse me tell us the um tell us the impact that gateway has on the community yeah when i first became involved is probably around 2016 or so um gateway was still out at the church facility and normally we would be we would be serving somewhere around five to five hundred and fifty and that was that was in a month that's per month those are unique individuals those are specific individuals in 2019 that had gone up in february of 2019 that number was 745. i in june of this year june of 2022 our official number was 1457. so we have been growing in and it is a fair statement to make that we knew this was coming given the nature of the changes being made in snap uh distribu snap uh proceeds the free and reduced lunch rates and and the program how those are being changed all these changes in other programs are occurring september uh at least by september of this year so we know that these numbers uh so far for this year we're seeing about a 30 increase yeah and we don't think we're done seeing growth or there are three three large uh pantries in wayne county that are that serve pantries of which we are the we are the largest of the three and they're the others are big but they're just right our job is pantry only whereas in their cases it's other things as well so well you're definitely having an impact by just the sheer numbers of people that you are serving it is yeah yeah and and uh the the the program i'm sorry how do i say this the clients that we serve are the ones who have vehicles that's a many of the others are serving in a generic territory but ours we are able to serve all through the county and the bulk of the people who come to us come so with a car right and and there's two reasons one that gives them a chance to come in from a long distance but number two we fill them up when a car comes in it does not leave empty yeah i mean we we pack them yeah so we've only got a couple of minutes left here uh in our time it goes so quickly but it always does yes it always does two things one what would happen if gateway ceased to exist in this community that's not an answer i really want to delve on because it scares me well that could be the answer in and of itself yeah you know the the the size of gateway in terms of its ability to provide for the community the partnerships we've developed and the donation base that we have for foods and other supplies if that went away would be very very difficult to find an answer for it would take a minimum of a year maybe more to be able to get any other group or any other uh organization to grow to be able to cover it the first thing though i can tell you for those that may or may not know one of our primary suppliers is there's a food bank in indianapolis called gleaners and i would have to think that gleaners will end up having to put a facility in place here yeah yeah i don't think they want to but i would think they're going to end up having to if we were not there yeah um something else that would be possible because of difficulties along the same line uh and gleaners has had to step in and start operating and and i would they would do so here but it is by far the least like least capable system of servicing our community right well i think we're going to have to leave it there for uh for today um i do want to let the viewers know that if you are interested in volunteering for gateway hunger relief or you're wanting to know about their services what's available their facebook page is their best is their best avenue to connect with them and that we've got that information on the screen um i think we've also put their phone number up so you are able to give them a call as well and as we wrap this episode of the third sector i want to thank my guests guy got three from gateway hunger relief thank you so much and also a big thank you to ty muldoon from girls inc for joining me today and sharing with me but you are community the great work that they do to help everyone so with that we're gonna wrap today's show stay well and we'll see you next time on the third sector [Music] do [Music] you 00:00:21.410 --> 00:00:21.420 align:start position:0% [Music] [Applause] [Music] hello and where have you gone from the beginning well gateway started out in 2006 as an offshoot a mission of the gateway church of richmond which is up on route 227 and they initially started it in the building thinking well okay we'll have a little room in the back little room in the back starts to grow and after a while the storage of stuff for the little room in the back ended up being in the back end of the sanctuary and then it ended up in the middle of the sanctuary and about that point they figured out they needed a little more a bigger place to do things with so in 2018 process of movement started to take us to 715 sheraton avenue or sheraton street it's the old commons lumber building which is where we started to rent our our operations out there it's been a wonderful place because in addition to the the old retail section which is where the bulk of the distribution occurs we also have the area where they used to store all of the lumber and that's where we put our extras so it's been allowing us the opportunity to grow to meet the needs that the community has has brought to us and so yeah that that happened about 2019 in the fall 2019 we moved in there ever since okay and uh we anticipate staying there a walk because it's been able to serve us well yeah so um tell us uh uh the mission and the vision of the organization yeah the the the very very beginning the mission was was expressed in a very simple way i mean there are a lot of words to it but in simple terms it means anyone who comes to us in need gets served we will not turn away anyone who comes to us with need now the question of need is consistently being described as the food is security that's what we're good at but we do have aspects of other areas of such as paper goods soaps and things like that but for the most part if someone walks up here tells us that there's a need for food we will service them in some fashion that's been our mission from the beginning continues to be our mission and it's the biggest way that we judge how well we're doing because i i'm comfortable in saying and feel great in being able to say that so far we have not had an opportunity or need to turn anyone away well that's wonderful we focus on people in wayne county because that's where we let the world know about our services and and union county in the same book vein but people come to us from randolph county or bayad or other areas we don't turn them away well the community is very fortunate to have you guys i know that you serve a lot of different um areas within the community so i know you guys in addition to um and i don't know which is it tuesdays and fridays that are the days that you guys are thursdays and fridays of every week from 10 to 12. two hours and i say two hours and what i really mean is uh two hours plus what we have left over to continue serving until the line's done because more than more times than not we can we have a line still there at the 12 o'clock time frame right and there's like time in a moment ago we don't turn people away we just keep right on going until everyone gets what they need yeah and then um uh you go you all did start an uh an and i can't speak sorry you started another part of your program which was serving seniors uh well we were housebound right so it's a big delivery institutional living is probably the quickest way of describing it um what we discovered was several years ago that if there are two things that needed to be done one was to serve people couldn't get to us and number two we found that if we focus what we serve with in other words the the people we serve it tends to give them more of what they need and it's less bulky on our part which is a polite way of saying we don't have to deal with either storing or or getting a lot of just plain excess that's a way of saying it right so by by being able to target our audience we've been able to create uh answers for them at the same time not overdoing the buying and selling you know the the the size of our facility so we have let's see last week it was five five facilities that we take stuff too the managers at the facilities hand out a list of what people in the building want okay that list is then sent to us we fill the boxes and then drop the boxes off uh sometimes to the individuals sometimes to a local room like a a community room where either in some fashion the local right facility uh delivers within the building itself um those are the two big ones we do have some others but that that tends to go up and down according to what the people the situation would need and we normally run between 300 to 400 people a week for that right well that's a lot of people in our community it is they take it we we've had to move we used to do a pickup truck uh those were the early days now it's a big box truck yes times have changed you guys have gotten bigger um so um tell our audience today because a lot of times when we interview folks or talk to organizations we have the head of the organization or um uh you're you're our first grant writer so why don't you give us an overview of the staff you're the substitute today but yes so the the head person but i'll let you take it as you give the overview of the staff spend a little bit under the weather so the the gateway is run by a lady named linda white and linda unfortunately is fighting pneumonia she's winning but she hasn't won so she wasn't able to make it so i had the fun opportunity to fill in for her um so linda and linda runs it and then she has with her a manager for the building and then she uh that would be like the distribution side of things uh-huh and then there's another manager or gal that is the warehouse manager so she has there's the total of three ladies that run the program and then there's one lady who helps out in the we're just going to call it the numbers stuff the this you know the administrative work right so it's a poor lady group and then beyond that most distribution days as i commented which is tuesday and friday there's somewhere around 20 to 25 volunteers okay that come in they come from a variety of sources believe it or not our biggest area of recruitment are the clients who have been there in the past and come back to give us a hand and help us that's wonderful that really is um that's that's terrific news um tell us a bit um as we uh have a few you know a few few more minutes left in our time together excuse me tell us the um tell us the impact that gateway has on the community yeah when i first became involved is probably around 2016 or so um gateway was still out at the church facility and normally we would be we would be serving somewhere around five to five hundred and fifty and that was that was in a month that's per month those are unique individuals those are specific individuals in 2019 that had gone up in february of 2019 that number was 745. i in june of this year june of 2022 our official number was 1457. so we have been growing in and it is a fair statement to make that we knew this was coming given the nature of the changes being made in snap uh distribu snap uh proceeds the free and reduced lunch rates and and the program how those are being changed all these changes in other programs are occurring september uh at least by september of this year so we know that these numbers uh so far for this year we're seeing about a 30 increase yeah and we don't think we're done seeing growth or there are three three large uh pantries in wayne county that are that serve pantries of which we are the we are the largest of the three and they're the others are big but they're just right our job is pantry only whereas in their cases it's other things as well so well you're definitely having an impact by just the sheer numbers of people that you are serving it is yeah yeah and and uh the the the program i'm sorry how do i say this the clients that we serve are the ones who have vehicles that's a many of the others are serving in a generic territory but ours we are able to serve all through the county and the bulk of the people who come to us come so with a car right and and there's two reasons one that gives them a chance to come in from a long distance but number two we fill them up when a car comes in it does not leave empty yeah i mean we we pack them yeah so we've only got a couple of minutes left here uh in our time it goes so quickly but it always does yes it always does two things one what would happen if gateway ceased to exist in this community that's not an answer i really want to delve on because it scares me well that could be the answer in and of itself yeah you know the the the size of gateway in terms of its ability to provide for the community the partnerships we've developed and the donation base that we have for foods and other supplies if that went away would be very very difficult to find an answer for it would take a minimum of a year maybe more to be able to get any other group or any other uh organization to grow to be able to cover it the first thing though i can tell you for those that may or may not know one of our primary suppliers is there's a food bank in indianapolis called gleaners and i would have to think that gleaners will end up having to put a facility in place here yeah yeah i don't think they want to but i would think they're going to end up having to if we were not there yeah um something else that would be possible because of difficulties along the same line uh and gleaners has had to step in and start operating and and i would they would do so here but it is by far the least like least capable system of servicing our community right well i think we're going to have to leave it there for uh for today um i do want to let the viewers know that if you are interested in volunteering for gateway hunger relief or you're wanting to know about their services what's available their facebook page is their best is their best avenue to connect with them and that we've got that information on the screen um i think we've also put their phone number up so you are able to give them a call as well and as we wrap this episode of the third sector i want to thank my guests guy got three from gateway hunger relief thank you so much and also a big thank you to ty muldoon from girls inc for joining me today and sharing with me but you are community the great work that they do to help everyone so with that we're gonna wrap today's show stay well and we'll see you next time on the third sector [Music] do [Music] you 00:00:21.420 --> 00:00:22.610 align:start position:0% [Music] [Applause] [Music] hello and welcome to the third sector i'm your host tamara brinkman in our society there are three sectors the public the private and the nonprofit and it's that third sector that we're here to talk about today my guest for today's show are ty muldoon who is the ceo and executive director of girls inc wayne county and then later in the show joining me will be guy guthrie representing gateway hunger relief center but starting us off we've got time muldoon with us ty welcome to the third sector thanks for having me tomorrow well thank you so much for giving myself and our viewers some of your time today we're very excited to hear all about girls inc and um first obviously we should we should note that um you are newly the ceo and executive director of girls inc or rather recently and very excited to uh to have you there well thank you it's like coming home i am excited to be back i was a girls inc girl for ever ago uh and then i worked here about 12 years ago for four years and they were four of my favorite years my professional life so i'm glad to be back in a new role in a new building uh with some new girls new faces and uh just doing some of the same work that i did then i think it's so exciting that you can say you were a girls ain't girl and now you're the ceo and executive director of girls inc um which leads us to all kinds of things that align with why that is um so fitting uh for this organization but why don't we just before we go into all that start with just uh let folks know um when did girls think come to wayne county how long has it been here and and and how does it look today now that it didn't or has it changed to today's time yeah so girls think nationally has been around actually since i believe 1864 i might have my date wrong oh my god i'm following the civil war for women so um the concept of girls inc has been around forever it was not always called girls inc it's been the girls club and couple variations of that um in the late 60s early 70s i don't have my exact date um some women in wayne county realize that there was a need for girls in our area to have a safe place to learn how to grow and develop and be strong leaders in our community and then in the 90s it went from girls club to girls incorporated and for those that need the the brief history lesson it used to be the boys club and the girls club and what was girls club became girls incorporated so we've been girls inc for um well over a couple decades now but still doing similar things and our mission has stayed very similar um but our vision and what we're offering to girls has definitely changed since 1864 in the 1970s well let's hope that you know with with the change in time so so then we flex and and change accordingly so um take us a little bit more into what that mission is and what your vision um is today yeah so the mission is to inspire all girls to be strong smart and bold so give them skills to strengthen mentally physically emotionally um and just make them well-rounded individuals who will grow up to be leaders and mentors and do some big and amazing things and the vision is just that the girls are given the tools to be successful in life to overcome whatever's thrown their way to manage a world where um things aren't always fair so i think it's a vision that any female can get behind but uh we have a lot of male allies as well and male supporters that that see that that's important for the girls in their lives especially in wayne county too yeah real realism real life um so tell us a little bit about um and i know it's hard to look down the road but but what are the goals with that mission and that vision for say the next year or so or whatever that timeline might be for you guys maybe it's only six months yeah so i have some amazing staff amazing board members and we have an amazing community and so one of my personal goals is to expand and either rebuild or strengthen some partnerships with other youth serving organizations in our community as well as starting to look outside of wayne county we realize that the need is great not just right here in richmond that the need is great in centerville um union county fayette county so starting to have some of those conversations that i have some wild goals and visions in mind and i'm looking for ways to partner to make those come to life but definitely start expanding our services growing some of the programs that are being offered in the schools and just expand what we're doing and find ways to help the other non-profits and other youth serving organizations in our community thrive as well right well if anyone listening out there wants to partner with you guys you know how to we'll we'll tell our audience how they can connect with girls inc and obviously get to you to support some of your lofty goals uh hopefully not lofty that you can bring to fruition those are the kind of things that you need you got to dream big you got to reach reach high to to achieve those things so we've put the phone number up on the screen for our viewers to see so that's one way that you can connect with girls inc you can just give them a call you mentioned your staff your great staff a few times and so um why don't you give us an overview of what your staff looks like yeah so i'm the ceo executive director and i have a wonderful leadership staff so we have a director of operations a program manager assistant program manager and executive assistant and beyond that we have staff that offer programming in the schools and on site we have a 1 to 15 girl ratio in our programming so that includes some volunteers some program staff we take high school interns as well so our program staff is a wonderful mix of adults young adults and professionals that have been trained in a variety of programming how if people want to get involved they want to volunteer or they want to learn more um uh i guess or get just get involved what's the best way for them to do that yeah so it depends on what type of volunteering they're looking for but all of our contact information is on our website they're also welcome to stop by the center and talk to us we do ask that any volunteer that's spending time with our girls or is on site when girls are on site pass a background check so somebody's looking for time to help make the outside of our center beautiful you know we take anybody that's willing to pull weeds down to doing homework help so uh it just depends on what that person's individual needs are and what they're looking for to get out of a volunteer experience but we have a lot of opportunities that we can be flexible with but they can contact me directly they can go the website they can stop by they can send us a letter we'll call them back well good to know good to know so tell us a little bit about how girls inc is funded okay so we have a really diverse spending portfolio which is wonderful to say as a ceo we receive grants through places like the united way our local banks as well as larger organizations like lilly we also take membership costs that help offset that fee a little bit and private and individual donors so wide wide variety of ways to support us yes yes indeed so we've heard a lot of the um the wonderful things that girls inc does um so i guess one one part before i ask my second part of my question is would you be able to estimate about how many girls you serve in wayne county um ballpark maybe a year so ballpark would be upwards of 600 kids i will say kids because we do offer programming to male students as well in the schools but for our summer program we had around 95 and we are right now at 95 registrations and expected to just we're getting more registrations every day um so i'm hoping that that number is going to increase by next year and these are in our covent world you know these are are lower numbers than expected so i'm anticipating as things settle down a little bit that those numbers are just going to go up yeah yeah well hopefully anyone watching today will um will take this in and maybe maybe that'll drive them to uh to to to join um or get their parent to take them to join rather so what is what is your biggest impact in the community or girls inc's biggest impact i'd say it's directly on the girls i mean we work really hard at providing quality mentorship and research back evidence-based programming that really helps the girls to thrive and so it could be one girl it could be 90 girls but as living breathing proof that the program works it really does empower girls and having girls or youth in general that feel confident that have new opportunities open to them really go on to be successful and amazing community members so we have programs that encourage the girls to volunteer to get back to learn more about their community uh programs that help strengthen their financial knowledge you know i i still look at some of the financials and like okay i'm glad that i had some knowledge and skills going into this so it just i think our biggest impact is the next generation you know i again i'm living breathing proof that it works and i'm confident that the girls that come through our program will turn out much better than when they started through our doors yeah so with a few minutes left in our time on the opposite end of um you know knowing all the good you do and the positive what would it be what would our community be like what would happen if girls inc ceased to exist if we didn't have it here in wayne county what a sad thought to have right um i can say that we do have amazing other opportunities for kids but i know that we aren't all reaching every child in wayne county and so that would be 600 more kids that didn't get a caring adult in their life that didn't get the support the mentorship the encouragement that they needed and so it's kind of heartbreaking to think that those kids then wouldn't have a snack after school or during summer breakfast snack and lunch they wouldn't get their doors open to new opportunities field trips um stem exploration no and so i just think about the kids that wouldn't be as successful as an adult that weren't taught coping skills or um that there are people in their lives that really care what happens to them so it makes me want to cry a little to think about not being here to not have this opportunity for other girls my nieces both participate in the program and so i'm envisioning what their lives might be like they would still be amazing wonderful girls but it's going to be that much better for them because they're here for the program right right so as we wrap up our time today tell me what um what brings you the most joy in what you do every day the girls hands down i'm having a bad day or there's something that i'm struggling with i get up out of my chair and i go spend some time in the programming and my office overlooks the gym and so sometimes just standing up and watching that they're just being kids they are playing they are having fun they're learning while they're doing it um just makes me happy and i've explained it as it is pure and utter chaos some days and people that have never worked in youth service can look at me a little crazy from like i thrive in that chaos because that means that those girls are having fun that they're enjoying being here so uh it's it's definitely the girls and the handmade crafts that they bring me you know i can't describe what some of these things are that show up in my office but i love every single one of them oh well um you know you are in the right place there is no question and girls inc is lucky to have you leading them and it's just thank you so much for giving us some time today so thank you tai for representing girls ing and for joining me today and sharing with our community the great work that you all do and the impact you have on our our on our excuse me on our young ladies so um we appreciate it well thank you for giving me an opportunity to talk about it anytime anytime when we come back guy guthrie from gateway hunger relief will be joining me stay with me [Music] welcome back to the third sector guy guthrie from gateway hunger relief center has joined me guy thank you so much for coming and joining on being on the third sector uh my pleasure and that of our group too well thank you so much so um guy is let's just talk mainly you're the grant writer that is your your your primary role with gateway hunger relief center which is a really big job um but you're able to give us lots of other information because obviously we aren't going to write a
