How a person can work at and not know what I'm talking about makes my head explode.

OLD VERSION: Go to Prelinger Archive then go to Browse by Subject/Keywords. The list has ~1200 items give or take a few dozen AND you can see about 150 in a single browser window (i.e. without scrolling down) which makes browsing extremely fast and efficient.

NEW VERSION: The subject/keyword list has been eliminated and replaced by the Topics list on the right-hand side, which has roughly 200 entries. And you can only see about 33 items before you need to scroll down.

In other words: The new design is like making a supermarket so it has only one, extremely long aisle instead of the 15 parallel aisles that all supermarkets have. Think about what a pain that would be - that's exactly what the new Topics list is.

So there are TWO separate issues here:

1) 85% reduction in keywords

2) Slow clumsy single-column layout

well, i hope your head is ok. your original post did not mention "Browse by". keywords are also listed on individual item pages as well as search results pages. i wanted to to be sure that we have parity on that because there are some search issues that need to be resolved and the presence of that metadata on the pages is based on search.

your subsequent post made it clear that you are comparing "browse by subject" feature to the new metadata facets feature. they are different but your point is well taken.

the site is still considered beta so we are encouraging constructive feedback. i'll mention your concerns to the design team.

thanks for your feedback.

Keywords? Gads... some contributors list as many as three THOUSAND words for 'keywords'.

I guess they want their contribution listed when any one searches for any thing.

It also takes up un-necessarily a LOT of space.

Jeff hasn't removed the search for specific keywords - looks like IA just reduced the pattern some.
