And the long version on Live Dead (from 1969) of Dark Star may have turned off a lot of people at the time as well. Don't get me wrong, I thought it was a great piece of music to listen to, alone, at sunrise or pre-dawn. But I've heard at least one old hippie tell me what they most recall about it was when Garcia starts playing those chalkboard-scratching leads... I can see his point. And for others, it's just too long, and never says anything... what do they care about a distant star imploding or whatever it's supposedly about... too obscure... No beef. The short form (the original 45 from 1967) reveals, just as you point out, all that's wrong with it. It's really their most over rated song ("song") - it's not quite experimental enough to be in the Sun Ra category; it's far from a record that works even on FM in 1970 (unless played late at night). But the 1968 versions I can listen too, once in a while.
