I have a high speed connection, so it's no problem for me to queue up a few 2-3GB downloads and come back in a few hours to have them done. Or even to re-encode them with a sane compression algorithim for another few hours so I can burn 'em on dvds.

What I don't get is why the Internet Archive doesn't flag egregiously large files for review. Take the resident evil, metroid, and legend of zelda speed runs. They clock in at a few GB, but can easily be re-encoded with XVid or some other compatible codec into a file that's 200-300mb big. *Without* loss of quality. Not trying to be elite and promote some new tech fad, but this would result in a substantial amount of saved bandwidth.

I'd hate to see such a cool site have to close this section because it's financially absurd.

Well, our policy is to worry less about bandwith and size vs. quality and maintainability and access.

(Not that we don't have items with errors, mind you 8-).

I happened to notice this post and thought i'd reply... you seem to be complaining about the size of the *High quality* download. You didn't notice that there are much smaller normal and low quality? The HQ are huge to try to preserve as much information as feasable in the very likely event that vids will need converted in the future.

Bah, I mistakenly put this here instead of http://www.archive.org/movies/collection.php?collection=speed_runs#forum

Would appreciate if a nice moderator could move it for me :)

Can't do a move, but post a copy in the right forum under your own id and I can prune this for you later!
