Was the music not specific to one show back then? I often hear music from one show being used in another. For example I was listening to a show the other day (don't remember which one) and I heard the theme from tales of the texas rangers. Was this common?

Yes, there are a handful of shows that use the same theme music. And you may have also noticed that shows don't always stay with the first theme they try. I haven't found a site with links to MP3s of all the themes, but there are lots of sites that list the titles.

To resurrect an old thread I ran into by accident ....

It's not uncommon to hear the same music in OTR shows of the 1950s especially and even the same sound effects recordings.

In order to cut costs as radio started loosing ad revenue in the late 40s, producers started turning to libraries of stock music. These were sets of recordings with different short themes for different moods played by different music groups. The record sets were released by NBC under their Thesaurus label and many others and were first sold to local stations and producers of syndicated shows in the 1930s. After the otr era, these music library discs were still produced and updated for contemporary styles and, in the Top 40 era and even today, are used for commercial backgrounds and other short snippets of music needed in radio production. There's a whole sub-speciality of 16" transcription collectors who specialize in production music.

You can hear quite a few music bridges and transitions that were reused in several shows - I've heard some in "Tales of the Texas Rangers" (NBC) that are in "The FBI in Peace and War" and "Johnny Dollar" (both CBS).

You can even hear the same sound effects used in different shows. The networks and even film studios amassed libraries of sounds that weren't easy to create in the studio, such as common automobile noises, etc.

I ran into a rather surprising re-use of sound effects in an episode of "The Whistler" from 1952 in my own collection of transcriptions. Around the six minute mark in the show (in the AFRTS version), you hear them use an effects recording of harbor sounds - the same sound effects record used in the famous "War of the Worlds" program where the reporter describes the approaching aliens from the "top of the broadcasting building". There's distinct patterns of boats blowing horns that are recognizable in the recording. You can hear it here:

Both shows were on CBS, so they probably just called up a disc in the network's library when they needed the sound effect.
