Nice find (track 28) - I love these guys! They don’t do too many covers, and played New Speedway only a couple of times. Here they played Brown-Eyed Women:

On the other hand, Reid’s old band Strangefolk has always thrown in some Dead here and there.
In fact, at StrangeCreek 2009 they covered most of the Reckoning album. Nothing spectacular, but it was great fun in the afternoon.: http://www.archive.org/details/sf2009-05-24.sbd

And just for kicks, here is a clip of my boys Jatoba playing Rosalie McFall.

Any chance to hear Angel from Montgomery is always welcomed. Grace Potter does a fine job, I'd highly recommend seeing her band next time she comes to town. John Prine wrote it, but to me this Bonnie Raitt recording is the quintessential rendition. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vhe3vb0z7mY Susan Tedeshi turns in a close second. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZlcP3FOTM0U EDIT: Tedeschi's version is actually Angel > Sugaree > Angel

I agree re Bonnie; her duet with John on his Prime Prine (?) is fantastic.

This is perhaps my favorite cover of any Dead tune by anyone:

I think it was Chris Freedom (?) that posted it here many years back. Blew me away on first listen and really got into their sound.

PS: just streamed the entire album from bandcamp, great psych music, and for $10 bucks, yeah def. worth it ... see, this forum is good for something! http://blackcab.bandcamp.com/album/altamont-diary edit: GD related, the track 'Jerry Sez' is Jerry and others commenting on the Hells Angels beating up M.Balin; also, the track '1970' (not the Stooges song btw, that would have taken some balls to include the Stooges on an LP with a GD cover) is the tour-de-force here, 10'41 of sonic bliss

Thnks for the link Arb. I've been sampling the music and like what I am hearing on the Altamont album. Going to check out their recent stuff next.

i checked out the Call Signs LP, also great, and will check out the rest of the Black Cab catalogue definitely; you gotta love bandcamp, no ads, immediate download, $$$ direct to the artist (minus 10 or 15% depending), lotsa free stuff from the artists ... DOWN WITH THE BIG LABELS

What a great site. The player works fabulously, and you can stream entire songs/albums. I have been floating around here for hours. The Jesus East album has the track Valiant, another song that references the Dead, with monologue by Sam Cutler.
Thanks Chris Freedom, BD and veblen, all of whom have mentioned this band before!

that is very cool! having a hard time understanding every word of the monologue, i'd love to have it word for word, sounds pretty amazing; here's the info. on the composition of Valiant: "Guest spoken word by Sam Cutler, Rolling Stone and Grateful Dead road manager during their tumultuous US tours in the 1970's (that's Sam in the roll neck behind the scene's at Altamont in the Mayle's Brothers' epic movie Gimme Shelter). Sam reached out to make contact after the press of Altamont Diary. He was living in Brisbane and we asked him to come down and do something poignant towards the end of the album. We recorded some interviews with him which didn't really work (too stagey), then Sam said he had an idea and we let him speak alone to the mic for around 30 mins. The results are magic. More on Sam at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Cutler and his own site at gimmecutler.com" edit: and yeah, bandcamp is fantastic, none of that 30 second sample for streaming, that's for the likes of top40 fans, et. al

His words are proving difficult to turn up, even for a super sleuth such as myself.

Some quotes I did find in an Australian article when the album was released:
"It was such a bizarre idea that someone would make an album based about a disaster," Cutler says. "It's like making an album about famine — not an album of pop songs designed to raise money to alleviate famine, more like an album about what it feels like to starve to death. But I loved it, especially the slightly psycho fearfulness of it. Bits of it made me feel afraid."

Cutler was a pioneer of free music, having a hand in the Hyde Park, Altamont and Grateful Dead shows. He says today's music fans feel they have a right to download music for free. "Everyone thinks they have a song in them, so they think 'why should I have to pay for someone else's?'

"For five years the Grateful Dead never charged for a gig because Owsley put the money up — he had made 350,000 acid trips before acid became illegal," he says. "If someone can come up with $5 million a year, I'll take Black Cab all over the world to play for free. But even if you had a sponsor, they still want logos all over the place, so it's not really for free. Those days are over."

hey, thanks for putting your sleuth skills to the search

i might try to parse it myself this weekend; check out his website, you can download an .mp3 of the Valiant track for free; i'm also curious if his book is available here in the US? i don't generally read works by living authors, but i might make an exception in this case, i'll bet it's a fairly enjoyable read

Can't Always Get What You Want has been on my list of things to check out. I mean, how could we pass it up? Not available at my public library, pretty cheap from amazon - I will order it from my local independent bookseller.

not sure this would interest you, or even applicable in your case, but if you have the iphone or ipad, or new generation ipod, you can purchase the 'You Can't Always Get What You Want' app, right now for 1/2 price -- $4.99 -- which includes:

-the complete text of the book
-the complete audio book (read by Sam)
-a video gallery w/clips from Altamont, and 2 40 minute interviews with Cutler
-a 20 page photo gallery with never before published photos of the Stones and the GD

i swore to myself that i would never purchase any apps, and haven't to date, but i never loooked in the mirror and said, 'Read my lips!', so i think it's okay...

‘read my lips’ mirror moments usually occur on an arduous morning after, but I digress.

My interest in anything *iTunes* related revolves around being able to converse with my kids about using their ipods. I‘ve been resistant myself, and (finally) just this week have purchased a Roland R-09HR. I recognize that this isn’t a gear forum so I won’t carry on, but in addition to its recording abilities, it makes one heck of an easy ipod alternative for me. Just loaded the SD card with some stuff to play at work tomorrow (via our apparatus) . This is going to be fun.

hey, good luck with the Edirol, i purchased one of those last August, and have loved it and used it often; also, like you, i used it for digital playback of my music, especially during my bike rides; then, in Jan. of this year, my brother got (for free), a 64 gig ipod touch which he said he has no use for, and gave it to me, and i've been loving it ever since, altho mostly for its ebook functionality, which i hadn't been able to do since my Sony Clie finally gave up the ghost a few years ago regarding the Cutler app, i did purchase it last nite, and overall for the price, definitely worth it, mostly for being able to listen to Sam's reading, he really has a great reading voice; and just for anyone else thinking about purchasing said app, the vids that are 'included', are really just youtube links in the app, so in reality, they're not part of the purchase per se, but the photo journal is rather cool; also, the text of the novel moves automatically whether you have the audio of Sam on or off, which is a bit disappointing; however, just being able to hear Sam reading his book is so worth it if you have any questions regarding the R-09HR, shoot me an email: [edit]

So far I am very pleased with the R-09. I have been researching this purchase for a long time, and finally went for it. Now working out what else I will need to connect to my other gear. The wish list gets longer! Thanks for offering assistance (got your address).
