The Mediocre Programmer? What's that? The Mediocre Programmer is a book about the journey of becoming a better programmer. But before we can become better programmers we have to pass through being mediocre programmers. Mediocre doesn't mean a bad programmer --- far from it. It means lacking skill. As beginners we start our journey full of fresh ideas of how we'll be great programmers, but as we learn more we realize that the gap between being a beginner and an expert programmer requires us to...

Craig Maloney https://www.pyohio.org/2019/presentations/111 This talk is highlights from a book that I'm writing about the journey of being a mediocre programmer. Beginners tend to get all of the love, and advanced programmers get all of the respect and glory. But we don't have much for helping intermediate programmers. We don't tend to consider how difficult it can be to work through the exuberance of beginning programming (where everything is new, fresh, and exciting) into becoming better...

Craig Maloney http://pyohio.org/schedule/presentation/263/ Ever since a moth was discovered in the Mark II computer we've dealt with bugs in software. This talk will show different methods for determining what the code is doing. We'll start with the lowly print statement and introduce advanced forms of logging. We'll also cover several Python debuggers and talk about best practices for debugging and preventing bugs in Python code. PyOhio is a free (thanks sponsors!) annual conference for Python...

We show that, in the athermal quasi-static deformation of amorphous materials, the onset of failure is accompanied by universal scalings associated with a \emph{divergence} of elastic constants. A normal mode analysis of the non-affine elastic displacement field allows us to clarify its relation to the zero-frequency mode at the onset of failure and to the crack-like pattern which results from the subsequent relaxation of energy.

We present the results of numerical simulations of an atomistic system undergoing plastic shear flow in the athermal, quasistatic limit. The system is shown to undergo cascades of local rearrangements, associated with quadrupolar energy fluctuations, which induce system-spanning events organized into lines of slip oriented along the Bravais axes of the simulation cell. A finite size scaling analysis reveals subextensive scaling of the energy drops and participation numbers, linear in the length...

We study exact results concerning the non-affine displacement fields observed by Tanguy et al [Europhys. Lett. {\bf 57}, 423 (2002), Phys. Rev. B {\bf 66}, 174205 (2002)] and their contributions to elasticity. A normal mode analysis permits us to estimate the dominant contributions to the non-affine corrections to elasticity, and relate these corrections to the correlator of a fluctuating force field. We extend this analysis to the visco-elastic dynamical response of the system.

Over in the USA we're coming off of celebrating Labor Day which is a day where some folks get to they day off while others get to go in to work. It's a crazy little holiday but it gave me some extra time to peruse the net for the best in Creative Commons Licensed Metal Music. And we have a great episode lined up with music from Legions, Cleaver, Storm Cry, Ancient Emblem, Catapult The Dead, Deep Sea Thunder Beast, Lucifer In The Sky With Diamonds, Schematics for Gravity, and Cryogen Second. Things have been rather erratic here at the Open Metalcast Headquarters. We've been rather lax in releasing the metal to you in a timely fashion. One could blame the holidays, but part of it was I was getting behind myself in a lot of things. But my hope in the coming year is that we'll have more metal to share with you and that metal will be prompt and piping hot when delivered directly to your earbuds. Kind of like pizza delivery, but without that awkward moment when you're tipping the...

Part of the fun in recording a podcast is trying to get everything done in one take without making mistakes. Sometimes that just happens, where I start to say a name of a band and then sound like I have marbles in my mouth. Other times there will be "technical difficulties" like having a cat decide that she needs to be up on the desk at the same time. But we never let these issues stand between you and the amazing Creative Commons Metal Music that awaits your ears. We have music from...

It's mid-wintertime here at Open Metalcast Headquarters. Part of the fun of winter is the snow that inevitably shows up during this time. One of the ways to counteract the snow in this climate is to put down prodigious amounts of salt on the roads. The salt is pretty corrosive and gets everywhere. So, what does this have to do with Creative Commons-licensed metal music? Consider this show an assault in the making that will scatter metal music in your ears (See what I did there?) We have a great...

Things have been a little busy around the Open Metalcast compound, so this episode is actually comprised of tracks I was hoping to put together for the next Instrumetalcast episode. Hopefully this will satiate your primal lust for Creative Commons music, and the hunger for another Instrumetalcast with one combined episode. And while these songs have been in my backlog for a while, they're by no means back-burner material, with the latest by Cloudkicker, Depths, The Multiverse Concept, Judd...

Many years ago when I was heavily into Dream Theater I stumbled upon a band that sounded interesting but was unable to hear their music (this was before Youtube made it insanely easy to hear most of mankind's recorded output). The band was Spock's Beard and I bought several of their albums sight-unseen from the Thoughts mailing list admin (Thanks, Lisa!). Fortunately in this day and age with sites like Jamendo and Bandcamp you don't have to guess what an album sounds like and once I heard the...

Regular listeners of the show may notice this episode posting later than normal. That's because the normal posting date was during Pycon and I was hanging out in beautiful Montréal Canada enjoying the largest gathering of Python developers in the world. Recently we got the chance to speak with Lindsay from the band Carthasy . Carthasy hails from Perth, Australia, and just released their new EP, Apertures on Bandcamp. A perfect description of the band is on their site: Some bands try very hard to please you. Carthasy are not one of those bands. Carthasyâs experimental hard rock doesnâtsubscribe to any formula: schizophrenic two-minute assaults hold an uncomfortable truce with atmospheric seven-minute slow-burners. If you're even remotely aware of a country called the United States of America you'll no-doubt know that November 8th is our election day. While the Open Metalcast interns scour the net for Creative Commons Metal Music (contrary to popular belief it's not just one person searching Bandcamp on the Monday Evening before the show drops. Nope, not that at all) we've noticed a lot of tags for the music we find. One tag that can be a mixed bag is "experimental", which can lead to some truly unique music, or can lead to something that sounds akin to, well, something else. This week I'll be seeing Rush in concert for their 40th anniversary tour. One of the reasons Rush is one of my favorite bands is they bucked the trends. On the album 2112 they released the now legendary concept track "2112" which clocked in at over 20 minutes. This was despite their label stating they didn't want any more concept songs. Despite this the album is now regarded as a cultural treaure in Canada and the band is still going strong 40 years later. So much for listening to the...

There are many algorithms that are now monitoring and making decisions in our lives. We're constantly bombarded with algorithms telling us what we should like, where we should drive, and what food would be best for us to eat. Here at Open Metalcast Headquarters we've prided ourselves on being punctual with the delivery of Creative Commons Metal Music to your bloodstream via our easy-to-listen podcast format. Sometimes short and sweet is the order of the day. Sometimes there's more to be said. This episode is on the shorter-end of the spectrum but that doesn't make it any less potent. Especially with bands like humanhostbody, Crowned In Flesh, Throne of Botis, Old Man Wizard, Neptuniam, Cyborg Octopus, Wombripper, and Noble Beast pushing the limits of awesome Creative Commons metal. Perhaps we should re-brand it as concentrated or ultra-strength? (00:10) Grom Odprtih Ran by humanhostbody from Split...

If seems the Marie Kondo bug has hit the Open Metalcast studios. We took all of the tracks in the Open Metalcast Archives and saw which ones still sparked joy. Or rather, which ones could stop vibrating long enough to put into the episode. We have some great Creative Commons-Licensed Metal for you, including tracks from Grey Heaven Fall, Violblast, Kekal, Amiensus & Oak Pantheon, Black Market Serotonin, 114 Kassandra, Sound of Ground, Katu Veo, and Seajeff. These tracks are ready to vibrate...

Here at the Open Metalcast Headquarters we're always acquiring Creative Commons metal music for the show. We carefully select the finest CC-licensed metal music and run it through a scientific process to ensure the best listening experience possible. And this show is no exception, featuring music from Cara Neir, Epiphany From The Abyss, Anvil of Doom, Altars of Grief, ctrlBrain, Force Events!, Pyrit, The Neptune Power Federation, and Fuzz Forward. And we can pretty much guarantee that a certain...

While Hurricane Sandy delivers hopefully the last of her Frankenstorm-like powers upon the East Coast, we have our own Creative Commons Metal storm brewing. And while we won't have reporters telling you the obvious "it's wet out here", we do have some of the finest music the net has to offer waiting to unleash upon your earholes. So hunker down, and let the net share the best in Creative Commons Metal with you. (00:11) The Storm by Atsphear from The Storm (BY-NC-ND) (04:42)...

After a brief hiatus we decided to make up for it by just blasting your eardrums with non-stop metal music. In that spirit we only have four words for you: "shut up and mosh". Oh, and one more sentence, but that's it. Show notes after the break. There, that should do it. (00:25) Force fed resistance by Dejadeath from ¡¡¡Viva dios!!! Ugh. It's full-bore allergy season here, and apparently everything is being marked for death by my body. So to celebrate (?) we've lined up 8 tracks of music loud enough to make even the most stuffed ears hear clearly. And lest you think it's just the allergy medicine talking near the end of the episode, yes, that's just Judicator singing in German for their upcoming album. And you're probably over Crabcore, but are you ready for Duckgrind? It's an episode you won't want to miss, no matter how...

Finishing up this episode while recovering from the amazing convention known as Penguicon which happened this weekend. One of the highlights was one of the staff members dressed in corpse-paint and a hula skirt behind a Tiki bar. That's pretty unconventional, but what's even more unconventional (outside of being, well, outside of the convention) is the cadre of chaos we have in store for you in this episode. There's new stuff by Substance Black, Black Market Serotonin, and Samsara, as well as...
