As they decelerate through the atmosphere, meteors deposit mass, momentum and energy into the surrounding air at tremendous rates. Trauma from the entry of such bolides produces strong blast waves that can propagate hundreds of kilometers and cause substantial terrestrial damage even when no ground impact occurs. We present a new simulation technique for airburst blast prediction using a fully-conservative, Cartesian mesh, finite-volume solver and investigate the ability of this method to model...

NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity has found an iron meteorite, the first meteorite of any type ever identified on another planet. The pitted, basketball-size object is mostly made of iron and nickel according to readings from spectrometers on the rover. Only a small fraction of the meteorites fallen on Earth are similarly metal-rich. Others are rockier. As an example, the meteorite that blasted the famous Meteor Crater in Arizona is similar in composition. "This is a huge surprise,...

The slim crescent of Iapetus looms before the Cassini spacecraft as it approaches the mysterious moon. Iapetus, 1,468 kilometers (912 miles) across, seen here in false color, is unique in its dramatic variation in brightness between the northern polar region and the middle and low latitudes. Equally prominent is the moon's equatorial ridge of towering mountains. The profile of the ridge against the darkness of space reveals that it is topped by a cratered plateau approximately 15 kilometers (9...
