The polymer chains of a novel asymmetric polydiacetylene, namely poly((8-butoxy carbony)methyl urethanyl) 1-(5-pyrimidyl)-octa-1,3-diyne)(BPOD), in the absence of nonlinear optically active chromophores and without recourse to poling assemble in an acentric stable polar organization upon spin coating or solution casting. Asymmetry of the side groups and the spontaneous alignment of the urethane side groups by means of hydrogen bonds appear to be responsible for this organization. An abrupt...

Direct evaluation of the 1-loop fluctuation determinant of non-static degrees of freedom in a complete static background is advocated to be more efficient for the determination of the effective three-dimensional model of the electroweak phase transition than the one-by-one evaluation of Feynman diagrams. The relation of the couplings and fields of the effective model to those of the four-dimensional finite temperature system is determined in the general 't Hooft gauge with full implementation...

Binary Moment Diagrams (BMDs) provide a canonical representations for linear functions similar to the way Binary Decision Diagrams (BDDs) represent Boolean functions. Within the class of linear functions, we can embed arbitrary functions from Boolean variables to real, rational, or integer values. BMDs can thus model the functionality of data path circuits operating over word level data. Many important functions, including integer multiplication, that cannot be represented efficiently at the...

Under this grant the researchers have primarily investigated two classes of electromagnetic problems. The first contains the quantitative description of microwave heating of dispersive and conductive materials. Such problems arise, for example, when biological tissue are exposed, accidentally or purposefully, to microwave radiation. The goal of this project is to investigate the fundamental scientific issues that will provide a foundation for a formal design methodology for hard-real-time systems. We think that it is fair to say that the progress made by this group parallels and indeed defines much of the direction and advance in real-time software research in the last 10 years. To bring a scientific discipline to real-time system design, we must develop formal techniques: (1) to specify the real-time behavior of systems...

This monograph argues that a strategic center of gravity analysis is the primary task a nation must accomplish before prosecuting a war. The author, LTC Hoffman, uses the Iran-Iraq War as a vehicle to illustrate how such a strategic analysis might be done and what happens when nations fail to make their enemy's strategic center of gravity the object of decisive action in war. In doing so, LTC Hoffman presents a holistic model for a strategic center of gravity that can be used as both an...

We show that a recent proposal by Nambu to generate a hierarchy among Yukawa couplings in the standard model may be easily implemented in superstring models. In such models, two of the main ingredients of the Nambu proposal find a natural explanation: minimising with respect to the Yukawas amounts to a minimisation with respect to the underlying moduli fields and a constraint on the Yukawas of the type of the Veltman condition may be attributed to the relaxation process to a phenomenologically...

With a model calculation, we demonstrate that a non-invasive measurement of intrinsic quantum Hall effect defined by the local chemical potential in a ballistic quantum wire can be achieved with the aid of a pair of voltage leads which are separated by potential barriers from the wire. B\"uttiker's formula is used to determine the chemical potential being measured and is shown to reduce exactly to the local chemical potential in the limit of strong potential confinement in the voltage...

The production of $\jpsi$ at large transverse momenta ($\pt > M_\jpsi$) in $p\bar p$ collisions is considered by including the mechanism of fragmentation. Both contributions of fragmentation to $\jpsi$ and of fragmentation to $\chi$ states followed by radiative decay to $\jpsi$ are taken into account. The latter is found to be dominant and larger than direct production. The overall theoretical estimate is shown to be nearly consistent with the experimental observation.

We study in next-to-leading order QCD hadronic penguin $B$ decays in the Standard and two-Higgs-doublet models. Although the gluonic penguin dominates, we find the electroweak contribution non-negligible. In the Standard Model, the branching ratio for $B \rightarrow X_s \phi$ is predicted to be in the range $(0.6\sim 2)\times 10^{-4}$. The ranges of branching ratios for $B\rightarrow K \phi$, $B\rightarrow K^*\phi$, and $B_s\rightarrow \phi\phi$ are $(0.4\sim 2)\times 10^{-5}$, $(0.2\sim...

By treating CP-violating interaction as a perturbative term, we solve the Dirac equation in the background of electroweak bubble wall (the distorted wave Born approximation). We obtain the transmission and reflection coefficients for a chiral fermion incident from the symmetric-phase region and for the one from the broken-phase region respectively. There hold the respective sets of unitarity relations and also reciprocity relations among them. These relations enable us to rigorously derive...

The cross section of the reaction $^3$He$(\gamma,pn)p_{spec}$ in the energy range 150 - 450 MeV has been calculated in a quasifree two-body model and compared with a recent kinematically complete experiment. In comparison with free deuteron disintegration the cross section is increased by a factor of about 1.5 in reasonable agreement with the data for photon energies above 200 MeV. At lower energies the data deviate from the two-body behaviour and thus suggest a more important role of the...

Work described in past progress reports led to the conclusion that the postsynaptic glutamate receptors which mediate fast, excitatory transmission in mammalian brain are the sites at which the changes responsible for LTP occur. Moreover, pharmacological and physiological experiments indicated that the nature of the change involved a modification of receptor channel kinetics. Modelling studies, incorporating this information into a biologically realistic simulation of the receptor, resulted in...

There is continuing concern about the depletion of the ozone layer. Recently it has been determined that effluents from rockets exhausts contain chemical species that can be classified as Potentially Ozone Reactive Chemicals (PORCs). Calculations on the destruction of ozone layer suggest that rockets contribute about 1% to the overall depletion on a yearly basis. This has motivated studies to determine methods and processes which can reduce the amount of ozone depletion. This study examines the...

The Hausdorff dimension is calculated using the two-point correlation function, while the dynamical parameters are estimated using available data and reasonable assumptions on the mass function of galaxies. This result can have essential consequences in the understanding of the dynamical mechanisms that...
