Differential cross sections for electromagnetic dissociation in nuclear collisions are calculated for the first time. In order to be useful for three - dimensional transport codes, these cross sections have been calculated in both the projectile and lab frames. The formulas for these cross sections are such that they can be immediately used in space radiation transport codes. Only a limited amount of data exists, but the comparison between theory and experiment is good.

This document presents a summary of the larger report, "Parent Involvement Activities in School Improvement Plans in the Northwest Region." Although the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) spells out parent involvement requirements for schools in need of improvement, the majority of the Northwest Region school improvement plans reviewed failed to include such provisions. Reported findings in the study include: (1) Despite a wide range of parent involvement practices discussed in...

This paper begins as an initial rejoinder to the ideas expressed by Ross (2000) in The Promise and Perils of E-Learning: A critical look at the new technology. In his article, Ross supports the traditional practices of pedagogy at the primary school level--face-to-face pedagogy--and then critiques what he describes as a "fetishisation" of technological pedagogy--a fetishisation seen in the increase of E-learning pedagogy at the primary school level. The ideas expressed in this article...

Most prostate cancer (PCa) research has focused on risk, little is known about predictors of progression and even less about how these factors differ by ethnicity/race. Strong racial disparities in mortality have shown that African-Americans are twice as likely to die from PCa compared to Caucasians; very little data are available in Hispanics. Our overall goal is to identify markers related to PCa progression in a multiethnic cohort of 773 Caucasians, 361 African-Americans, and 246...

The purpose of this report is to determine the extent to which NVQ2 qualifications, when acquired in a person's late twenties and early thirties, encourage progression on to other learning and/or lead to other beneficial changes in a person's economic circumstances. The project will provide evidence to help inform the Department about whether NVQ2 qualifications are likely to contribute to individuals' productivity and to assist in attempts to improve qualification design and delivery. This study measures the nationwide participation rates of girls and boys in exercise and organized team sports. The central focus is on how the intersections among families, schools and communities are related to children's involvement and interest in athletics and physical activity. Some of the personal and social benefits associated with children's athletic participation are also identified and discussed. The athletic interests and involvements of girls and boys are examined from childhood...

Leadership is an important component in guiding the teaching-learning process. Principal as school leaders have a major responsibility for initiating and implementing school change through the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and can facilitate complex decision to integrate it into learning, teaching and school administration. Hence, educational leaders must understand, promote and implement the notion that technology integration is not about the technology; it is about...

The present study sought to examine the relationship between teacher quality and student achievement in public elementary schools in a community district school of the New York City. It has 23 elementary schools, more than 7,600 students and around 350 teachers. For this study, participants consist of a sample of 117 full-time teachers who were working in third, fourth and fifth grade during the 2006-2007 school year. By recognizing the link between quality teaching and student achievement,...

The fatigue behavior of a 3rd generation PM disk alloy, LSHR, was studied at 1300 F. Tensile, creep, and fatigue tests were run on smooth and notched (Kt = 2) bars under a variety of conditions. Analysis of smooth bar fatigue data, run under strain and load control with R ratios of 0 and -1, showed that a stress based Smith-Watson-Topper approach could collapse the data set. While the tensile and creep data showed substantial notch strengthening at 1300 F, the fatigue data showed a life deficit...

Based on prior successful fabrication and demonstration testing of a carbon-carbon heat pipe radiator element with integral fins this paper examines the hypothetical extension of the technology via substitution of high thermal conductivity composites which would permit increasing fin length while still maintaining high fin effectiveness. As a result the specific radiator mass could approach an ultimate asymptotic minimum value near 1.0 kg/m2, which is less than one fourth the value of present...

Through December 2007, cycle 23 has persisted 140 mo from its 12-mo moving average (12-mma) minimum monthly mean sunspot number occurrence date (May 1996). Longer than average period cycles of the modern era (since cycle...

This innovation blends the merits of multifoil insulation (MFI) with aerogel-based insulation to develop a highly versatile, ultra-low thermally conductive material called hybrid multifoil aerogel thermal insulation (HyMATI). The density of the opacified aerogel is 240 mg/cm3 and has thermal conductivity in the 20 mW/mK range in high vacuum and 25 mW/mK in 1 atmosphere of gas (such as argon) up to 800 C. It is stable up to 1,000 C. This is equal to commercially available high-temperature...

Equations are developed with which to calculate lift and drag coefficients along the spans of torsionally-stiff rotating airfoils of the type used in wind turbine rotors and wind tunnel fans, at angles of attack in both the unstalled and stalled aerodynamic regimes. Explicit adjustments are made for the effects of aspect ratio (length to chord width) and airfoil thickness ratio. Calculated lift and drag parameters are compared to measured parameters for 55 airfoil data sets including 585 test...

The flow of quantized vortex lines in superfluid 3He-B is laminar at high temperatures, but below 0.6 Tc turbulence becomes possible, owing to the rapidly decreasing mutual friction damping. In the turbulent regime a vortex evolving in applied flow may become unstable, create new vortices, and start turbulence. We monitor this single-vortex instability with NMR techniques in a rotating cylinder. Close to the onset temperature of turbulence, an oscillating component in NMR absorption has been...

We consider the Poisson Boolean model of continuum percolation. We show that there is a subcritical phase if and only if $E(R^d)$ is finite, where $R$ denotes the radius of the balls around Poisson points and $d$ denotes the dimension. We also give related results concerning the integrability of the diameter of subcritical clusters.

Security-typed languages (STLs) are powerful tools for provably implementing policy in applications. The pro-grammar maps policy onto programs by annotating types with information flow labels, and the STL compiler guarantees that data always obeys its label as it flows within an application. As data flows into or out of an application, however, a runtime system is needed between the information flow world within the application and the non-information flow world of the operating system. In the...

Traditional vital signs often fail to identify critically injured patients soon enough to permit timely intervention. To improve our ability to forecast the need for prehospital lifesaving interventions (LSIs), we applied heart-rate complexity (HRC) analysis to the electrocardiogram (ECG) of patients en route to trauma centers. Methods: Analysis of ECG and clinical data from 374 patients en route by helicopter to three urban Level I trauma centers was conducted. Waveforms from 182 patients were...

In the present studies, attempts were made to prepare multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) on a large scale in the form of aligned carbon nanotubes as arrays. Arrays of these carbon nanotubes were densified, like in carbon felt densification process by filling the space within the nanotubes. Therefore, the work undertaken in the present studies was to develop arrays of MWNTs and to develop aligned MWNTs composite films using chemical vapor infiltration technique. Substantial characterization...

A cytoplasmic ER mutant (cER), lacking its NLS domain, is completely resistant to ICI-mediated degradation. The inability of ICI to degrade cER is not due to an inability of cER to bind ICI. Furthermore, the resistance phenotype is independent of both length of treatment with ligand and dose of ICI that is administered. The NLS domain may serve as a region of interaction with other proteins that assist in the degradation process. If this statement is true, it is unlikely that keratin 18 (K18),...
