In the late 1960s, Jimmy Buffett was living in Nashville and trying to start a career as a folk country musician. He cut two albums, but only 1970s down to earth, which didn't actually do very well was released his record company at the time claim to have lost the Masters to the second album. So Jimmy Buffett and Jerry Jeff Walker, who you might know from Mr. Bo J. angles, headed down to Key West in 1971. It was right after Jimmy's marriage to his high school sweetheart had broken up, they were...
By the early 1970s, when the fabrics and designs of Lilly Pulitzer were retail and media darlings, Tony Falcone started coming to Key West with his partner, Bill Conkle. Eventually, they decided to open up a store. It was called Fast Buck Freddie's and it was on Key West's main drag, Duval street. They opened at a time when many other stores on Duval Street were closing. They tapped into the new chic money that was just starting to discover Key West, with it's fabulous old houses built in its...

We report on the long-term evolution of the spin period of the symbiotic X-ray pulsar GX 1+4 and a possible interpretation within a model of quasi-spherical accretion. New period measurements from BeppoSAX, INTEGRAL and Fermi observations have been combined with previously published data from four decades of observations. During the 1970s GX 1+4 was spinning up with the fastest rate among the known X-ray pulsars at the time. In the mid 1980s it underwent a change during a period of low X-ray ux...

This article is from International Journal of Circumpolar Health , volume 72 . Abstract Background: Many nations routinely include health impact assessments (HIA) in public policy decisions. Institutionalization of HIA formally integrates health considerations into a governmental decision-making process. We describe an example of institutionalization in the United States through Alaska's early experience with institutionalization of HIA. Literature review: HIA arose from a series of health...

The Flexible Image Transport System (FITS) standard has been a great boon to astronomy, allowing observatories, scientists and the public to exchange astronomical information easily. The FITS standard, however, is showing its age. Developed in the late 1970s, the FITS authors made a number of implementation choices that, while common at the time, are now seen to limit its utility with modern data. The authors of the FITS standard could not anticipate the challenges which we are facing today in...

We recall the path breaking contributions of the nuclear theory group of the Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre, Kolkata. From a beginning of just one person in 1970s, the group has steadily developed into a leading group in the country today, with seminal contributions to almost the entire range of nuclear physics, viz., low energy nuclear reactions, nuclear structure, deep inelastic collisions, fission, liquid to gas phase transitions, nuclear matter, equation of state, mass formulae, neutron...

The nuclear fission process that occurs in the core of nuclear reactors results in unstable, neutron rich fission products that subsequently beta decay and emit electron anti-neutrinos. These reactor neutrinos have served neutrino physics research from the initial discovery of the neutrino to current precision measurements of neutrino mixing angles. The prediction of the absolute flux and energy spectrum of the emitted reactor neutrinos hinges upon a series of seminal papers based on...

Approximating the solution of the nonlinear filtering problem with Gaussian mixtures has been a very popular method since the 1970s. However, the vast majority of such approximations are introduced in an ad-hoc manner without theoretical grounding. This work is a continuation of [4, 5], where we described a rigorous Gaussian mixture approximation to the solution of the filtering problem. We deduce here a refined estimate of the rate of convergence of the approximation. We do this by proving a...

We prove that, for large $n$, every $3$-connected $D$-regular graph on $n$ vertices with $D \geq n/4$ is Hamiltonian. This is best possible and confirms a conjecture posed independently by Bollob\'as and H\"aggkvist in the 1970s. The proof builds on a structural decomposition result proved recently by the same authors.

In the 1970s Muckenhoupt and Wheeden made several conjectures relating two weight norm inequalities for the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator to such inequalities for singular integrals. Using techniques developed for the recent proof of the $A_2$ conjecture we prove a related pair of conjectures linking the Riesz potential and the fractional maximal operator. As a consequence we are able to prove a number of sharp one and two weight norm inequalities for the Riesz potential.

Expansion was introduced at the end of the 1970s for calculating principal typings for $\lambda$-terms in intersection type systems. Expansion variables (E-variables) were introduced at the end of the 1990s to simplify and help mechanise expansion. Recently, E-variables have been further simplified and generalised to also allow calculating other type operators than just intersection. There has been much work on semantics for intersection type systems, but only one such work on intersection type...

Abstract The rise in pediatric obesity since the 1970s has been well established in the United States and is becoming a major concern worldwide. As a potential means to help slow the obesity epidemic, low-calorie sweeteners (LCS) have gained attention as dietary tools to assist in adherence to weight loss plans or prevention of excess weight gain. Observational studies tend to show positive correlations between LCS consumption and...

This article is from Ecology Letters , volume 17 . Abstract The giant tortoises of the Galápagos have become greatly depleted since European discovery of the islands in the 16th Century, with populations declining from an estimated 250 000 to between 8000 and 14 000 in the 1970s. Successful tortoise conservation efforts have focused on species recovery, but ecosystem conservation and restoration requires a better understanding of the wider ecological consequences of this drastic reduction in...

Studies that address the potential effects of climate and anthropogenic activities on lacustrine phytoplankton succession are scarce in the shallow lakes. In the present work, the succession of phytoplankton community inferred from sedimentary pigments has been investigated; the impacts of climate and anthropogenic activities on the succession have been evaluated by the generalized additive models (GAMs) in a shallow eutrophied lake, Lake Chaohu, located eastern China. The results show that...

This article is from Frontiers in Chemistry , volume 2 . Abstract We propose that targeting the enhanced photosynthetic performance associated with the cold acclimation of winter cultivars of rye (Secale cereale L.), wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), and Brassica napus L. may provide a novel approach to improve crop productivity under abiotic as well as biotic stress conditions. The United States appears less exposed to geopolitical risks affecting its oil supply than at any time since the relatively stable period preceding the widespread oil sector nationalizations of the 1970s. Energy prosperity in the US contrasts with a more fraught period for traditional energy exporting states where geopolitical challenges have been compounded by fiscal stress and rising domestic energy demand. America's relationship with energy-exporting countries will continue to evolve as the...

10cc are an English rock band founded in Stockport who achieved their greatest commercial success in the 1970s. The band initially consisted of four musicians – Graham Gouldman , Eric Stewart , Kevin Godley , and Lol Creme – who had written and recorded together for some three years, before assuming the name "10cc" in 1972. 10cc featured two songwriting teams, one "commercial" and one "artistic". Stewart and Gouldman were predominantly pop-songwriters, who...

The Tevatron has inspired new interest in the subject of magnetic monopoles. First there was the 1998 D0 limit on the virtual production of monopoles, based on the theory of Ginzburg and collaborators. In 2000 and 2004 results from an experiment (Fermilab E882) searching for real magnetically charged particles bound to elements from the CDF and D0 detectors were reported. The strongest direct experimental limits, from the CDF collaboration, have been reported in 2005. Less strong, but...

In 1959 American film producer K. Gordon Murray released an English-dubbed version of the Mexican Christmas film, "Santa Claus." The film won the Golden Gate Award for Best International Family Film at the 1959 San Francisco International Film Festival, and became a popular holiday classic, returning to theaters and television stations every Christmas until well into the 1970s. In 1979 the Internal Revenue Service seized all prints of Murray's films due to outstanding tax liabilities,...
