In this paper we give a general expression for the energy shift of massless particles travelling through the gravitational field of an arbitrary matter distribution as calculated in the weak field limit in an asymptotically flat space-time. It is {\it not} assumed that matter is non-relativistic. We demonstrate the surprising result that if the matter is illuminated by a uniform brightness background that the brightness pattern observed at a given point in space-time (modulo a term dependent on...

Worldsheet supersymmetric string action is written in duality invariant form for flat as well as curved backgrounds. First the action in flat backgrounds is written by introducing auxiliary fields. We also give the superfield form of this action and obtain the offshell supersymmetry algebra. The action has a modified Lorentz invariance and supersymmetry and reduces to the usual form when the auxiliary fields are eliminated using their equations of motion. Supersymmetric nonlinear sigma model in...

The in-plane magnetic field suppresses the quantum coupling between electrons in a double quantum well structure. The microscopical theory of this effect is developed and confirmed experimentally. We have shown that the decrease of the "resistance resonance" peak is sensitive to the mutual orientation of the current and the in-plane magnetic field. The characteristic field required for the suppression of the resonance depends on the elastic small angle and electron--electron...

Thermal motion of the flux lines (FL) gives rise to fluctuating magnetic fields. These dynamic fields couple to the nuclei in the sample and relax the nuclear spins. Based on a model of harmonic fluctuations, we provide a theoretical description of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation (NSLR) process due to the fluctuating FLs in clean type-II superconductors. At low fields, the calculated longitudinal relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}$ is enormously enhanced at temperatures just below $T_c$. At...

We suggest that Bose statistics for photons can be tested by looking for decays of spin-1 bosons into two photons. The experimental upper limit on the decay $Z \rightarrow \gamma \gamma $ is used to establish for the first time the quantitative measure of the validity of Bose symmetry for photons.

In the framework of chiral perturbation theory virtual photons are included. We calculate the divergences of the generating functional to one loop and determine the structure of the local action that incorporates the counterterms which cancel the divergences. As an application we discuss the corrections to Dashen's theorem at order [e^2*m(quark)].

Nondestructive inspection techniques such as Computed Tomography (CT) and Backscatter Imaging Tomography (BIT) have advanced to the point where detectors and image processors have reached a plateau in performance. Further improvement in the inspection techniques must come from better X-ray sources. Microfocus X-ray sources offer this improved performance due to their small X- ray spot size, which is generally on the order of tens of microns. The small spot approximates a point source, which...

We review the detailed structure of the large $N=4$ superconformal algebra, and construct its BRST operator which constitutes the main object for analyzing $N=4$ strings. We then derive the general condition for the nilpotency of the BRST operator and show that there exists a line of critical $N=4$ string theories.

We describe a search algorithm for two-player games that relies on selectivity rather than brute-force to achieve success. The key ideas behind the algorithm are: (1) Stopping when one alternative is clearly better than all the others; and (2) Focusing the search on the place where the most progress can likely be made toward being able to stop. Critical to this process is identifying uncertainty about the ultimate value of any move. The lower bound on uncertainty is the best estimate of the...

It is shown that non-trivial topological sectors can prevent the quantum mechanical implementation of the symmetries of the classical field equations of sigma models with torsion. The associated anomaly is computed, and it is shown that it depends on the homotopy class of the topological sector of the theory and the group action on the sigma model manifold that generates the symmetries of the classical field equations.

It is shown that the standard mod-$p$ valued intersection form can be used to define Boltzmann weights of subdivision invariant lattice models with gauge group $Z_{p}$. In particular, we discuss a four dimensional model which is based upon the assignment of field variables to the $2$-simplices of the simplicial complex. The action is taken to be the intersection form defined on the second cohomology group of the complex, with coefficients in $Z_{p}$. Subdivision invariance of the theory follows...

We investigate the local non--linear dynamics of irrotational dust with vanishing magnetic part of the Weyl tensor, $H_{ab}$. Once coded in the initial conditions, this dynamical restriction is respected by the relativistic evolution equations. Thus, the outcome of the latter are {\it exact solutions} for special initial conditions with $H_{ab}=0$, but with no symmetries: they describe inhomogeneous triaxial dynamics generalizing that of a fluid element in a Tolman--Bondi, Kantowski--Sachs or...

We present some recently discovered infinite dimensional Lie algebras that can be understood as extensions of the algebra Map(M,g) of maps from a compact p-dimensional manifold to some finite dimensional Lie algebra g. In the first part of the paper, we describe the physical motivations for the study of these algebras. In the second part, we discuss their realization in terms of pseudo-differential operators and comment on their possible representation theory.
