This study examines Operation SEALORDS, the capstone campaign conducted by the Brown-Water Navy in Vietnam. Specifically, this paper addresses the primary question: Was the SEALORDS campaign successful, and if so, what lessons, can be learned from SEALORDS and how might we employ brown-water forces in the future? This thesis breaks down the SEALORDS campaign into three areas of study. First, the study examines the barrier interdiction portion of the campaign designed to stem the flow of enemy...

Aerosol sampling for the determination of the concentrations of soluble ionic species and the natural radionuclides Be-7 and Pb-210 was conducted from the NASA DC-8 over the western Pacific as part of GTE/PEM-West B during February - March 1994. Concentrations of most soluble ionic species in the free troposphere were higher in samples collected on flights originating from Hong Kong and Japan than those collected further east over the open ocean. In both regions the measured concentrations were...

We consider a connected compact Lie group K acting on a symplectic manifold M such that a moment map m exists. A pull-back function via m Poisson commutes with all K-invariants. Guillemin-Sternberg raised the problem to find a converse. In this paper, we solve this problem by determining the Poisson commutant of the algebra of K-invariants. It is completely controlled by the image of m and a certain subquotient W_M of the Weyl group of K. The group W_M is also a reflection group and forms a...

We discuss long-baseline neutrino oscillations in the framework of the two 4-neutrino schemes which can accommodate all existing neutrino oscillation data. Negative results of short-baseline reactor and accelerator experiments allow to obtain rather strong bounds on the long-baseline nu_e->nu_e and nu_mu->nu_e transition probabilities. We consider in detail matter effects and show that the vacuum bounds are not substantially modified. We also comment on corresponding bounds in 3-neutrino...

This is the final report describing the objectives and accomplishments of the research conducted under the above referenced grant. The general purpose of this grant has been to study a novel approach to active vibration control in helicopter fuselages known as the Active Control of Structural Response (ACSR) approach. In this approach vibrations in the helicopter fuselage are reduced by introducing harmonically varying forces by actuators located between the rotor and the fuselage such that the...

The focus of our JOVE research has been to develop a field instrument that provides high quality data for atmospheric corrections and in-flight calibration of airborne and satellite remote sensing imaging systems. The instrument package is known as the Portable Ground-based Atmospheric Monitoring System or PGAMS. PGAMS collects a comprehensive set of spectroscopic/radiometric observations that describe the optical properties of the atmosphere and reflectance of a target area on the earth's...

We analyze a stimulated revival (echo) effect for the breathing modes of the atomic oscillations in optical lattices. The effect arises from the dephasing due to the weak anharmonicity being partly reversed in time by means of additional parametric excitation of the optical lattice. The shape of the echo response is obtained by numerically simulating the equation of motion for the atoms with subsequent averaging over the thermal initial conditions. A qualitative analysis of the phenomenon shows...

The Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST), a next generation high-energy gamma-ray mission designed to observe cosmic sources of gamma-rays over the approximate energy range from 10 MeV to 300 GeV, was studied for possible flight in the next decade. The GLAST baseline mission studied will achieve a major advance in sensitivity beyond EGRET by the use of modern particle physics tracking technology. The baseline instrument design that has been extensively studied uses solid-state silicon...

We calculate the large-$q$ series expansion for the ground state degeneracy (= exponent of the ground state entropy) per site of the $q$-state Potts antiferromagnet on the $(3 \cdot 12^2)$ lattice, to order $O(y^{19})$, where $y=1/(q-1)$. We note a remarkable agreement, to $O(y^{18})$, between this series and a rigorous lower bound derived recently.

This article presents a competence-oriented experiment on the comprehension of ideas in modern literature. Comprehension is defined as being indicative of competence as distinct from qualification. 117 students from various educational programs in a Swedish gymnasium participated in a course on modem literature and society. In the process of testing, the students were at two occasions exposed to three videotaped projections of model societies. In this connection they responded to 15...
