We study the interplay between surface roughening and phase separation during the growth of binary films. Already in 1+1 dimension, we find a variety of different scaling behaviors depending on how the two phenomena are coupled. In the most interesting case, related to the advection of a passive scalar in a velocity field, nontrivial scaling exponents are obtained in simulations.

The finite dimensional representations of associative quadratic algebras with three generators are investigated by using a technique based on the deformed parafermionic oscillator algebra. One application on the calculation of the eigenvalues of the two-dimensional superintegrable systems is discussed.

We present a model for quantum computation using n steady 3-level atoms or 3-level quantum dots, kept inside a quantum electro-dynamics (QED) cavity. Our model allows one-qubit operations and the two-qubit controlled-NOT gate as required for universal quantum computation. The n quantum bits are described by two energy levels of each atom/dot. An external laser and n separate pairs of electrodes are used to address a single atom/dot independent of the others, via Stark effect. The third level of...

In this article a notion of information is presented which stresses the contextuality of quantum objects and their measurement. Mathematically this is reached by a quantification of the quantum mechanical surplus knowledge which has been introduced by Weizsacker. This new formulation gives insight into relation between single quantum objects and ensembles of quantum objects. The goal is to provide an explanatory concept for teaching purposes, the description of quantum processes and measurement...

Through a series of five Integral Propulsion System burns, CXO was placed in a 10,000 x 139,000 km orbit. Methods for distilling maximally entangled tripartite (GHZ) states from arbitrary entangled tripartite pure states are described. These techniques work for virtually any input state. Each technique has two stages which we call primary and secondary distillation. Primary distillation produces a GHZ state with some probability, so that when applied to an ensemble of systems, a certain percentage is discarded. Secondary distillation produces further GHZs from the discarded systems. These protocols...

We introduce a formalism for the calculation of the time of arrival t at a space point for particles traveling through interacting media. We develop a general formulation that employs quantum canonical transformations from the free to the interacting cases to construct t in the context of the Positive Operator Valued Measures. We then compute the probability distribution in the times of arrival at a point for particles that have undergone reflection, transmission or tunneling off finite...

Econometrics is based on the nonempiric notion of utility. Prices, dynamics, and market equilibria are supposed to be derived from utility. Utility is usually treated by economists as a price potential, other times utility rates are treated as Lagrangians. Assumptions of integrability of Lagrangians and dynamics are implicitly and uncritically made. In particular, economists assume that price is the gradient of utility in equilibrium, but I show that price as the gradient of utility is an...

A 3D layered system of charges with logarithmic interaction parallel to the layers and random dipoles is studied via a novel variational method and an energy rationale which reproduce the known phase diagram for a single layer. Increasing interlayer coupling leads to successive transitions in which charge rods correlated in N>1 neighboring layers are nucleated by weaker disorder. For layered superconductors in the limit of only magnetic interlayer coupling, the method predicts and locates a...

Long-slit spectra obtained with the NOAO Phoenix near-infrared spectrometer allow us to probe the molecular kinematics of these nebulae at moderate spatial resolution. Using a new Bayesian method for solving inverse quantum problems, potentials of quantum systems are reconstructed from coordinate measurements in non-stationary states. The approach is based on two basic inputs: 1. a likelihood model, providing the probabilistic description of the measurement process as given by the axioms of quantum mechanics, and 2. additional "a priori" information implemented in form of stochastic processes over potentials.

General implications of existence of non-perturbative scales and hadronic sub-structure for high energy processes are discussed. We propose that the dependence of the cross section of $\bar q q$ dipoles on their size d should deviate from $d^2$ when d becomes comparable to substructure scale. Then we discuss Kharzeev-Levin pomeron model \cite{KL}, based on ladder-type diagrams with $scalar$ resonances (scalar $\pi\pi$ or $\sigma$ and the scalar glueball $G_0$).
