We have performed Monte Carlo simulations of type Ia supernova (SN Ia) surveys to quantify their efficiency in discovering peculiar overluminous and underluminous SNe Ia. We determined how the type of survey (magnitude-limited, distance-limited, or a hybrid) and its characteristics (observations frequency and detection limit) affect the discovery of peculiar SNe Ia. We find that there are strong biases against the discovery of peculiar SNe Ia introduced by at least four observational effects:...

The kinetic Ising model on a n-isotopic chain is considered in the framework of Glauber dynamics. The chain is composed of N segments with n sites, each one occupied by a different isotope. Due to the isotopic mass difference, the n spins in each segment have different relaxation times in the absence of the interactions, and consequently the dynamics of the system is governed by multiple relaxation mechanisms. The solution is obtained in closed form for arbitrary n, by reducing the problem to a...

Recently, Arcon et al. reported ESR studies of the polymer phase (PP) of Na_{2}Rb_{0.3}Cs_{0.7}C_{60} fulleride. It was claimed that this phase is a quasi-one-dimensional metal above 45 K with a spin-gap below this temperature and has antiferromagnetic(AF) order below 15 K, that is evidenced by antiferromagnetic resonance(AFMR). For the understanding of the rich physics of fullerides it is important to identify the different ground states. ESR has proven to be a useful technique for this...

The application of quark models to the spectra and strong and electromagnetic couplings of baryons is reviewed. This review focuses on calculations which attempt a global description of the masses and decay properties of baryons, although recent developments in applying large N_c QCD and lattice QCD to the baryon spectrum are described. After outlining the conventional one-gluon-exchange picture, models which consider extensions to this approach are contrasted with dynamical quark models based...

This investigation completed the verification of a three-dimensional resin transfer molding/resin film infusion (RTM/RFI) process simulation model. The model incorporates resin flow through an anisotropic carbon fiber preform, cure kinetics of the resin, and heat transfer within the preform/tool assembly. The computer model can predict the flow front location, resin pressure distribution, and thermal profiles in the modeled part. The formulation for the flow model is given using the finite...

We establish a new Howe duality between a pair of two queer Lie superalgebras (q(m),q(n)). This gives a representation theoretic interpretation of a well-known combinatorial identity for Schur Q-functions. We further establish the equivalence between this new Howe duality and the Schur-Sergeev duality between q(n) and a central extension $\Hy_k$ of the hyperoctahedral group H_k. We show that the zero-weight space of a q(n)-module with highest weight $\lambda$ given by a strict partition of n is...

Cosmic ray events above 10^19 eV have posed a fundamental problem for more than thirty years. Recent measurements indicate that these events do not show the features predicted by the GZK bound. The events may, in addition, display angular correlations with point sources. If these observations are confirmed for point sources further than 50 - 100 Mpc, then strong interactions for the neutrino are indicated. Recent work on extra spatial dimensions provides a context for massive spin-2 exchanges...

We have investigated an influence of the r-mode instability on hypercritically accreting ($\dot{M}\sim 1M_\odot {y}^{-1}$) neutron stars in close binary systems during their common envelope phases based on the scenario proposed by Bethe et al. \shortcite{bethe-brown-lee}. On the one hand neutron stars are heated by the accreted matter at the stellar surface, but on the other hand they are also cooled down by the neutrino radiation. At the same time, the accreted matter transports its angular...

Almost-complex and hyper-complex manifolds are considered in this paper from the point of view of complex analysis and potential theory. The idea of holomorphic coordinates on an almost-complex manifold $(M,\mathbf{J}%)$ is suggested by D. Spencer. For hypercomplex manifolds we introduce the notion of hyper-holomorphic function and develop some analogous statements. Elliptic equations are developed in a different way than D. Spencer. In general here we describe only the formal aspect of the...

The extraction of the parameters of perturbative QCD is one of the main tasks for the HERA experiments. Studies on the structure of the hadronic final states with jet algorithms give a direct handle on the parton density functions and the strong coupling strength over a wide kinematic range. In this article, new results of the H1 and ZEUS collaborations for the strong coupling and the gluon density in the proton are presented.

The data collected by the L3 experiment at LEP at a centre-of-mass energy of 188.6 GeV are used to measure the W-pair production cross section and the W-boson decay branching fractions. These data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 176.8pb^-1. The total cross section for W-pair production, combining all final states, is measured to be sigma_WW = 16.24 +/- 0.37(stat.) +/- 0.22(syst.) pb. Including our data collected at lower centre-of-mass energies, the hadronic branching fraction of the...

During 1997, the BL Lac object Mkn 501 went into an extraordinary state of high X-ray and TeV gamma-ray activity, lasting more than 6 months. In this paper we report on the TeV emission characteristics of the source in the subsequent years of 1998 and 1999 as measured with the Stereoscopic Cherenkov Telescope System of HEGRA (La Palma, Canary Islands). Our observations reveal a 1998-1999 mean emission level at 1 TeV of 1/3 of the flux of the Crab Nebula, a factor of 10 lower than during the...

We study the spherically symmetric collapse of a real, minimally coupled, massive scalar field in an asymptotically Einstein-de Sitter spacetime background. By means of an eikonal approximation for the field and metric functions, we obtain a simple analytical criterion---involving the physical size and mass scales (the field's inverse Compton wavelength and the spacetime gravitational mass) of the initial matter configuration---for generic (non-time-symmetric) initial data to collapse to a...

The CLIC study of a high-energy (0.5 - 5 TeV), high-luminosity (1034 - 1035 cm-2 sec-1) e+e- linear collider is presented. Beam acceleration using high frequency (30 GHz) normal-conducting structures operating at high accelerating fields (150 MV/m) significantly reduces the length and, in consequence, the cost of the linac. Using parameters derived from general scaling laws for linear colliders, the beam stability is shown to be similar to lower frequency designs in spite of the strong...

It is shown that the interaction of large amplitude electromagnetic waves with a hot electron-positron (e-p) plasma (a principal constituent of the universe in the MeV epoch) leads to a bunching of mass, energy, and angular momentum in stable, long-lived structures. Electromagnetism in the MeV epoch, then, could provide a possible route for seeding the observed large-scale structure of the universe.

This talk will discuss how to compute initial quantites in heavy ion collisions at RHIC (200 AGeV) and at LHC (5500 AGeV) using perturbative QCD (pQCD) by including the next-to-leading order (NLO) corrections and a dynamical determination of the dominant physical scale. The initial numbers are converted into final ones by assuming kinetic thermalization and adiabatic expansion.

In the present paper we give the proof of the composition rule for the scattering matrices. We perform a detailed analysis of the generalized star product for arbitrary unitary matrices. The relation to the theory of...

We derive an approximate relic neutrino asymmetry evolution equation that systematically incorporates repopulation processes from the full quantum kinetic equations (QKEs). It is shown that in the collision dominant epoch, the said equation reduces precisely to the expression obtained previously from the static/adiabatic approximation. The present treatment thus provides a rigorous justification for the seemingly incongruous assumptions of a negligible repopulation function and instantaneous...

It is known, that at high energies of ions (more than 10 MeV for light ions) the focusing by magnetic quadrupole fields is most effective, whereas at small energies (less than 1 MeV) - the focusing by electrical quadrupole fields. At intermediate energies of ions (from 1 to 10 MeV) the efficiency of each of these types of a focusing is reduced. The authors offer to utilize for this purpose the "hybrid" type of focusing systems consisting of sequence of electrical and magnetic...

A method of sideband Raman cooling to the vibrational ground state of the $m=0$ Zeeman sublevel in a far-detuned two-dimensional optical lattice is proposed. In our scheme, the Raman coupling between vibrational manifolds of the adjacent Zeeman sublevels is shifted to the red sideband due to the ac Stark effect induced by a weak pump field. Thus, cooling and optical pumping to $m=0$ is achieved by purely optical means with coplanar cw laser beams. The optical lattice and cooling parameters are...
