SpaceCup is a 3D version of ice-hockey or soccer in space. It has a ball that can rebound in any direction. The object of game is to score more goals than your adversary. The graphics and animation are pretty good, but the gameplay can be rather confusing.

One year ago, in late February 2000, the Multi-angle Imaging Spectroradiometer (MISR) began acquiring Earth imagery. Its “first light” images showed a frozen James Bay in the Ontario-Quebec region of Canada. These more recent nadir-camera views of the same area illuminate stark contrasts between summer and winter. The left-hand image was acquired on August 9, 2000,...

It is well-known that photoionization is the major mechanism powering nebulae emission-lines. For about 30 years, numerical simulations using photoionization codes have been employed to analyze HII regions, planetary nebulae and active galactic nuclei. Although these models can reproduce most of the observed features, some remain unexplained. Two possible causes for the discrepancies between observations and model predictions are discussed in this paper: (a) the models are not realistic enough;...

The IBIS telescope onboard INTEGRAL, the ESA gamma-ray space mission to be launched in 2002, is a soft gamma-ray (20 keV - 10 MeV) device based on a coded aperture imaging system. We describe here basic concepts of coded masks, the imaging system of the IBIS telescope, and the standard data analysis procedures to reconstruct sky images. This analysis includes, for both the low-energy detector layer (ISGRI) and the high energy layer (PICSIT), iterative procedures which decode recorded...

If the discrepancy between the theoretical and newly measured values of the muon's anomalous magnetic moment is ascribed to muon substructure, there results an improved model--independent limit on its energy scale, 1.2 TeV < Lambda_mu < 3.2 TeV at 95% C.L.

We study the warped geometry of heterotic M-Theory in five dimensions where five-branes are included in the bulk. Five-branes wrapping holomorphic curves lead to BPS configurations where the junction conditions are automatically satisfied. We consider five-branes wrapped around non-supersymmetric cycles and show that the configuration is unstable. We describe explicitly the resulting time-dependent geometry where the bulk five-branes move towards the Horova-Witten boundary walls. The...

Double beta decay is indispensable to solve the question of the neutrino mass matrix together with $\nu$ oscillation experiments. The most sensitive experiment - since eight years the HEIDELBERG-MOSCOW experiment in Gran-Sasso - already now, with the experimental limit of $ < 0.26$ eV practically excludes degenerate $\nu$ mass scenarios allowing neutrinos as hot dark matter in the universe for the smallangle MSW solution of the solar neutrino problem. It probes cosmological models including...

We consider some of the issues surrounding the formation and evolution of Q-balls in the MSSM and its extensions. The ratio of the baryon number packed into Q-balls to that outside, f_{B}, plays a fundamental role in determining the relationship of dark matter to the baryon number in the Universe at present. The final value of f_{B} will depend upon the details of the formation of Q-balls from the collapse of the Affleck-Dine condensate and upon the subsequent evolution of the ensemble of...

A simple analytical expression, which closely approximates the Coulomb potential between two uniformly charged spheres, is presented. This expression can be used in the optical potential semiclassical analyses which require that the interaction be analytic on and near the real r-axis.

We discuss the regularization and renormalization of QED with Lorentz and CPT violation, and argue that the coefficient of the Chern-Simons term is an independent parameter not determined by gauge invariance. We also study these issues in a model with spontaneous breaking of Lorentz and CPT symmetries and find an explicit relation with the ABJ anomaly. This explains the observed convergence of the induced Chern-Simons term.

We study the amplification of large-scale magnetic fields during preheating and inflation in several different models. Preheating can resonantly amplify seed fields on cosmological scales. In the presence of conductivity, however, the effect of resonance is typically weakened while the amplitude of produced magnetic fields depends sensitively on the evolution of the conductivity during the preheating and thermalisation phases. In addition we discuss geometric magnetisation, where amplification...

Magnetic fingerprints on the spectra of an interacting electron with a negatively charged ion in a parabolic quantum dot (QD), and of two interacting electrons in such a dot, are investigated via a pseudoperturbative methodical proposal. The effect of ion-electron and electron-electron interactions on the spectra are studied. The effect of the symmetry of such problem is emphasized. Compared to those obtained by Zhu et al. [6], via a series solution, the results are found in excellent accord....

Beginning late in 1996, the Air Force Research Laboratory undertook the first phase of a long-term program to compare the performance of direct push monitoring wells with that of conventionally-installed wells for long-term groundwater monitoring of corrective action sites. On average, long term monitoring accounts for nearly a third of the life cycle cost of corrective action. Wells emplaced using direct push technology have been shown to be less costly to install than conventional,...

The Hall constant R_H is considered for the stripe structures. In order to explain the vanishing of R_H in LNSCO at x = 1/8, we use the relation of R_H to the Drude weight D as well as direct numerical calculation, to obtain results within the t-J model, where the stripes are imposed via a charge potential and a staggered magnetic field. The origin of R_H ~ 0 is related to a maximum in D and the minimal kinetic energy in stripes with a hole filling ~ 1/2. The same argument indicates on a...
