Developing an effective capability to protect the homeland is a top national priority. It is also a complex undertaking filled with many challenges. There are so many assets to protect, so many modes of attack available to adversaries, and so many organizations involved, that, understandably, both the conceptual thinking and the capabilities required are still immature. Maturing the conceptual framework and capabilities related to homeland security, the DSB believes, requires a holistic...

A unique foam/multilayer insulation (MLI) combination concept for orbital cryogenic storage was experimentally evaluated using a large-scale hydrogen tank. The foam substrate insulates for ground-hold periods and enables a gaseous nitrogen purge as opposed to helium. The MLI, designed for an on-orbit storage period for 45 days, includes several unique features including a variable layer density and larger but fewer perforations for venting during ascent to orbit. Test results with liquid...

The goal of this project at the NASA Glenn Research Center is to provide fan materials that are safer, weigh less, and cost less than the currently used titanium alloy or polymer matrix composite fans. The proposed material system is a sandwich fan construction made up of thin solid face sheets and a lightweight metal foam core. The stiffness of the sandwich structure is increased by separating the two face sheets by the foam layer. The resulting structure has a high stiffness and lighter...

Researchers are constantly pursuing technologies that will increase the performance of gas turbine engines. The aspirated compressor concept discussed here would allow the compression system to perform its task with about one-half of the compressor blades. To accomplish this, the researchers applied boundary layer control to the blades, casing, and hub. This method of boundary layer control consisted of removing small amounts of air from the main flow path at critical areas of the compressor....

The port-side photovoltaic power module (P6) was activated on the International Space Station in December 2000. P6 provides electrical power to channels 2B and 4B to operate ISS power loads. A P6 is shown in the preceding photograph. This article highlights the work done at the NASA Glenn Research Center to calculate the on-orbit degradation of the P6 solar array wings (SAWs) using on-orbit data from December 2000 to February 2003. During early ISS operations, the 82 strings of photovoltaic...

An airplane is the ideal vehicle for gathering atmospheric data over a wide range of locations and altitudes, while having the freedom to maneuver to regions of scientific interest. Solar energy is available in abundance on Venus. Venus has an exoatmospheric solar flux of 2600 W/m2, compared with Earth's 1370 W/m2. The solar intensity is 20 to 50 percent of the exoatmospheric intensity at the bottom of the cloud layer, and it increases to nearly 95 percent of the exoatmospheric intensity at 65...

NASA is in the process of designing the James Webb Space Telescope. This telescope will investigate images of objects in deep space (stars, galaxies, etc.) by using light in the infrared region of the light spectrum. To make such observations, the telescope must have light sensors that operate at very cold temperatures, near absolute zero. To achieve this low-temperature tolerance, designers must place the light sensors behind a Sun shield that will prevent sunlight, and its heat, from reaching...

A recently invented method of fabricating periodic or otherwise ordered nanostructures involves the use of chaperonin polypeptides. The method is intended to serve as a potentially superior and less expensive alternative to conventional lithographic methods for use in the patterning steps of the fabrication of diverse objects characterized by features of the order of nanometers. Typical examples of such objects include arrays of quantum dots that would serve as the functional building blocks of...

For shapes represented as closed planar contours, we introduce a class of functionals that are invariant with respect to the Euclidean and similarity group, obtained by performing integral operations. While such integral invariants enjoy some of the desirable properties of their differential cousins, such as locality of computation which allows matching under occlusions and uniqueness of representation in the limit, they are not as sensitive to noise in the data. We exploit the integral...

We present a statistical analysis of the recently proposed non-homogeneity detector (NHD) for Gaussian interference statistics. Specifically, we show that a formal goodness-of-fit test can be constructed by accounting for the statistics of the generalized inner product (GIP) used as the NHD test statistic. The normalized-GIP follows a central-F distribution and admits a canonical representation in terms of two statistically independent chi-squared distributed random variables. Moments of the...

Specifically, it focuses on what the goals and objectives of AMC's reverse logistics program are, and in what situations they...

Angiogenic vasculature selectively expressed alphavBETA3 end alphavBETA5 integrins but they are not expressed in normal vasculature. They are cell adhesion molecules that play an important role in the regulation of angiogenesis. There are at least two cytokine-dependent pathways that lead to angiogenesis in vivo which can be distinguished by their dependency on specific alphav integrins. Here we aim to define what molecules are involved in alphavBETA3- and alphavBETA5-selective angiogenic...

Let kappa be a regular uncountable cardinal and lambda >=kappa^+ . The principle of stationary reflection for P_kappa lambda has been successful in settling problems of infinite combinatorics in the case kappa=omega_1. For a greater kappa the principle is known to fail at some lambda. This note shows that it fails at every lambda if kappa is the successor of a regular uncountable cardinal or kappa is countably closed.

The X-38 Crew Rescue Vehicle V-201 space flight test article was designed to achieve an aerodynamically controlled re-entry from orbit in part through the use of two body mounted flaps on the lower rear side. These flaps are actuated by an electromechanical system that is partially exposed to the re-entry environment. These actuators are of a novel configuration and are unique in their requirement to function while exposed to re-entry conditions. The authors are not aware of any other vehicle...

In this article, an investigation of the interaction between gas porosity and a planar solid/liquid (SL) interface is reported. A two-dimensional numerical model able to accurately track sharp SL interfaces during solidification of pure metals and alloys is proposed. The finite-difference method and a rectangular undeformed grid are used for computation. The SL interface is described through the points of intersection with the grid lines. Its motion is determined by the thermal and solute...

Future requirements may dictate the need for very large spacecraft architectures. At present, the only approach to placing large spacecraft into orbit is use of a heavy lift launch vehicle. But, given the new capabilities demonstrated by NASA's DART, and DARPA's Orbital Express, RASCAL, and FALCON, it is reasonable to envision an alternative means of placing large spacecraft into orbit, that being multiple responsive launches of discrete modules which are later assembled on orbit. An analysis...

The overall purpose of the project is to use silkelastin-like polymers (SELPs) for the development of controlled gene delivery systems for localized breast cancer gene therapy. The rationale is that by controlling the structure of the polymer, it is possible to control DNA release, duration of transgene expression and the corresponding reduction in tumor size. In year 1 progress was made in the following areas: i) In the biosynthesis of the analogs, and ii) the demonstration that when reporter...

Unfolding events in Iraq have prompted some observers to make analogies to the American experience in the Vietnam War. The United States has, they argue, stumbled into another overseas quagmire from which there is no easy or cheap exit. Reasoning by historical analogy is an inherently risky business because no two historical events are completely alike and because policymakers' knowledge and use of history are often distorted by ignorance and political bias. In the case of Iraq and Vietnam,...
