The Xbox 360 Fancast rolls on (despite numerous cries to stop). This week we discuss our early experience with Gears of War 2 (Horde mode is great fun, by the way), our hopes and fears for Ghostbusters and the joys of ironing. And, thanks to the perils of a weekend recording schedule, it turns out that we are lying when we say that Rare has no plans to fix the tiny text in Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts. Also, Dustin actually manages to make it through the whole show without leaving to play...

In recent years, millimeter wave imaging techniques, using synthetic aperture focusing and holographical approaches, have shown tremendous potential for nondestructive testing applications, involving materials and structures used in space vehicles, including the space shuttle external fuel tank spray on foam insulation and its acreage heat tiles. We investigate the possible measurement of parity-violating spin asymmetries in jet pair production in proton-proton collisions at the Brookhaven Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), with the goal to constrain longitudinally polarized quark and antiquark distribution functions. A measurable asymmetry could be observed in the vicinity of the massive weak W boson resonance, where the parity-violating signal appears above the parity-conserving background and is enhanced by interference of the...

In industrial environments, system operators rely on the availability and accuracy of sensors to monitor processes and detect failures of components and/or processes. The sensors must be networked in such a way that their data is reported to a central human interface, where operators are tasked with making real-time decisions based on the state of the sensors and the components that are being monitored. Incorporating health management functions at this central location aids the operator by...

We prove that perturbing the reaction--diffusion equation $u_t=u_{xx} + (u_+)^p$ ($p>1$), with time--space white noise produces that solutions explodes with probability one for every initial datum, opposite to the deterministic model where a positive stationary solution exists.

Recent experiments of Groeblacher et al. proved the violation of a Leggett-type inequality that was claimed to be valid for a broad class of non-local hidden-variable theories. The impossibility of constructing a non-local and realistic theory, unless it entails highly counterintuitive features, seems thus to have been experimentally proved. This would bring us close to a definite refutation of realism. Indeed, realism was proved to be also incompatible with locality, according to a series of...

We computed by a modified tight binding approximation, the total electronic energy of three different hybrid polymers: $H-SiO_2$, $CH_3-SiO_2$ and $C_6H_5-SiO_2$. We made the hypothesis that the structures of these polymers are amorphous. Computational results regarding the total electronic energy and experimental data \cite{ferchichi} on the toughness of these three hybrid polymers were compared. A good qualitative agreement was found between computations and experiments.

We consider an exact mu-tau reflection symmetry in neutrino sectorrealized at the GUT scale in the context of the seesaw model with and without supersymmetry. Assuming the two lighter heavy Majorana neutrinos are degenerate at the GUT scale, it is shown that the renormalization group (RG) evolution from the GUT scale to the seesaw scale gives rise to breaking of the mu-tau symmetry and a tiny splitting between two degenerate heavy Majorana neutrino masses as well as small variations of the CP...

We investigate the quantum phase transitions in the half-filled Hubbard model on the triangular lattice by means of the path-integral renormalization group (PIRG) method with a new iteration scheme proposed recently. It is found that as the Hubbard interaction $U$ increases, the paramagnetic metallic state undergoes a first-order phase transition to a nonmagnetic insulating (NMI) state at $U_{c1}\sim 7.7t$, which is followed by another first-order transition to a $120^\circ$ N\'eel ordered...

We deal with a Yukawa-like long-range modified model of gravity (MOG) which recently allowed to successfully accommodate many astrophysical and cosmological features without resorting to dark matter. On Solar System scales MOG predicts retrograde secular precessions of the planetary longitudes of the perihelia \varpi whose existence has been put on the test here by taking the ratios of the observationally estimated Pitjeva's corrections to the standard Newtonian/Einsteinian perihelion...

We investigate the role of Casimir energy as a mechanism for brane stability in five-dimensional models with the fifth dimension compactified on an S^1\Z_2 orbifold, which includes the Randall-Sundrum two brane model (RS1). We employ a zeta-function regularization technique utilizing the Schwinger proper time method and the Jacobi theta function identity to calculate the one-loop effective potential. We show that the combination of the Casimir energies of a scalar Higgs field, the three...

Entangled multi-spatial-mode fields have interesting applications in quantum information, such as parallel quantum information protocols, quantum computing, and quantum imaging. We study the use of a nondegenerate four-wave mixing process in rubidium vapor at 795 nm to demonstrate generation of quantum-entangled images. Owing to the lack of an optical resonator cavity, the four-wave mixing scheme generates inherently multi-spatial-mode output fields. We have verified the presence of...

We propose a regular black hole whose inside generates a de Sitter space and then is finally frustrated into a singularity. It is a modified model which was suggested originally by Frolov, Markov, and Mukhanov. In our model, we could adjust a regular black hole so that its period before going into the extreme state is much longer than the information retention time. During this period an observer could exist who observes the information of the Hawking radiation, falls freely into the regular...
