The long-term goal of this research is to develop an initialization scheme for a multi-dimensional, predictive aerosol model in coastal regions. The initialization scheme will have global coverage and include data gathering, quality control, and data assimilation of the available aerosol observations, including satellite aerosol retrievals, ground-based remote sensing, point measurements, and the previous aerosol forecast. The model will predict the atmospheric aerosols responsible for...

The Southeastern University Research Association (SURA) Coastal Ocean Observing and Prediction (SCOOP) program includes university, government, and private sector partners working together to implement information technology (IT) solutions. The SCOOP program vision is a modular and distributed system for predicting and visualizing the coastal response to extreme atmospheric events, including the damaging and catastrophic effects of storm surge, inundation, and wind waves. SCOOP program partners...

NICOP funding for this project ends at the end of September 2001, but the goals of the consortium of researchers continue. Our overall goal is to achieve a better understanding and better predictions of coastal behaviour at intermediate (event/season/year/decade) scales. We aim to bring together researchers from Europe and North America to gain the best possible benefit from developments in field observation, theory and numerical modelling.

The long-term goal is to: Develop and apply theory, schemes and computational systems for rigorous Bayesian nonlinear assimilation of Eulerian and Lagrangian coastal flow data, fully exploiting nonlinear governing equations and mutual information structures inherent to coastal ocean dynamical systems and optimally inferring multiscale coastal ocean fields for quantitative scientific studies and efficient naval operations. The specific objectives for the three-year project are to: Implement and...

The long-term goals of this project are to better understand, and thus to be able to better predict, the transport of different constituents in the marine atmospheric boundary layer. This transport may be due to mesoscale flow systems at locations along mountainous coastlines or boundary layer processes at the coast. The transported constituents may be properties of the marine boundary layer, e.g. humidity, air pollution or aerosols, the latter both of natural and man-made origin. In particular...

Characterizing the volume scattering function (VSF) of oceanic waters remains one of the most outstanding problems in optical oceanography. The goal of this program is to significantly advance our knowledge of the VSF of oceanic waters, particularly coastal waters. To achieve this goal we are developing new VSF instruments that are capable of accurately and routinely measuring in situ profiles of the complete VSF. Once we have developed the necessary tools for measuring the complete VSF, our...

The Sea Data wave gage is used extensively by the Corps of Engineers to obtain wave measurements. It measures water pressure with a transducer and records the time series of pressure fluctuations on an internal cassette tape. When deploying internal recording gages, failure of the gage for any reason cannot be detected until after recovery. If failure occurs the costs of deploying and recovering the instrument may be wasted. Failure to obtain the required data may in turn have other adverse...

LONG-TERM GOALS: To identify the major processes producing mixing in the upper ocean and to understand their dynamics sufficiently well to permit accurate parameterization of mixing for use in numerical models. OBJECTIVES: This was the first attempt we know of to survey a coastal domain with sufficient coverage to assess how mixing levels vary across the domain. Previous measurements have been concentrated in subregions, often revealing particular mixing processes, but insufficient to guide...

The long-term goal is to produce a physical water mass mixing model for describing colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) distributions in the coastal zone. The model will combine the effects of local nonconservative processes with overall mixing of major CDOM end-members from terrigenous and marine sources. Although the model will be firstly derived for one study site (the entrance to the Baltic Sea) the approach will be designed for implementation in other regions of Navy interest...

To describe the potential use of photogrammetric surveys for coastal structures. The jetty rehabilitation project at Manasquan Inlet, New Jersey, was selected for monitoring in 1982, under the Operation and Maintenance funded Monitoring Completed Coastal Projects (MCCP) Program. The long-term goal is to enhance our understanding of coastal oceanography by means of applying simple dynamical theories to high-quality observations obtained in the field. My primary area of expertise is physical oceanography, but I also enjoy collaborating with biological, chemical, acoustical, and optical oceanographers to work on interdisciplinary problems. I collaborate frequently with numerical modelers to improve predictive skill for Navy-relevant parameters in the littoral zone.

The primary objective was to assess mixing levels over a coastal regime, Monterey Bay, extending the scope of previous measurements that have been restricted to single lines or small domains. Secondarily, we sought to obtain enough data to compare mixing intensity, known to be high, with measurements on the New England shelf, which were low.

My principal goal is to understand the mechanistic basis for changes in the flourescent signatures, both host and algal symbiont, of corals. Changes in the spectral quantity and quality of visible and ultraviolet radiation will have effects of the quantum yield of photosynthesis and affect the fluorescent signatures of the algal symbionts as will changes in the temperature of the surrounding seawater. Since the reef environment is very dynamic, the challenge is to understand what environmental...

The goals of this study are to develop species- and life-stage-specific acoustic scattering models based on morphologically-accurate digitizations of preserved or live-imaged zooplankton from coastal waters. These models will estimate scattering strength as a function of acoustical frequency, animal size, taxon, and orientation relative to the incidence angle. These predictions will improve our ability to estimate animal abundances by taxon/morphological class via inversion.
