Modern military communication, navigation, and surveillance systems depend on reliable, noise-free transionospheric radio-frequency channels. They can be severely impacted by small-scale electron-density irregularities in the ionosphere, which cause both phase and amplitude scintillation. Basic tools used in planning and mitigation schemes are climatological in nature and thus may greatly over- and under-estimate the effects of scintillation in a given scenario. This report describes the second...

An important objective of the Defense Nuclear Agency is to understand the physical processes that control the dissipation of turbulent structure in plasmas. Such turbulent structures occur as a consequence of high-altitude nuclear events as well as in the natural, disturbed equatorial ionosphere. Analysis and understanding of those processes in the nighttime equatorial F-region ionosphere that are analogous to those found in the nuclear environment can lead to an intelligent extrapolation of...

Released in 1944 for the home market by Castle Films, "Yanks Invade Marshall Islands!" is a silent newsreel showing attacks on Roi and Namur in the Marshalls chain as part of the Battle of Kwajalein. At 1:03, raids by B-24 Liberators are made on Japanese airfields and other strongholds. At 1:59, battleships and cruisers deliver a barrage against shore positions. At 2:54, D-Day on Kwajalein, as the Marines head into landing craft and onto the beach. At 4:02, a huge cloud of smoke...

Power-spectral analysis of 8 mo of upper winds for Kwajalein shows significant peaks for 850 and 200 mb in the frequency band between 2.5 and 4 days. This is interpreted as the result of migrating perturbations with a wavelength of from 1000 to 2000 km moving with the trade wind. At 300 mb, the most pronounced peak is centered at 17 days; it is presumably a result either of slow-moving perturbations of a larger scale than those embedded in the trades or of meridional oscillations in the zonal...

Ten zinc inorganic silicate coatings were exposed for 5 years at the three atmospheric environmental test sites of the Naval Civil Engineering Laboratory. These test sites are Kwajalein, Marshall Islands; Kaneohe, Hawaii (both tropical environments); and Port Hueneme, California. The zinc inorganic silicate coatings were exposed with and without topcoats. It was found, that in general, postcuring and superior self-curing zinc inorganic silicate coatings without topcoats will give long-term...

Atmospheric parameters are essential to the research and development of missiles and aerospace vehicles. The need for realistic atmospheric models derived in a consistent manner for each of the several major test ranges was recognized in the early 1960's. An atmospheric model which is derived from statistical data for a particular geographical location is referred to as a reference atmosphere. This committee, Task MG-1, establishes RRAs Range Reference Atmospheres for the several ranges as...

The notes Include a handwritten report on the biology of Bikini, including Schultz's assessment of the damage done to flora and fauna in Bikini as a result of the atomic bomb, as well as observations on radioactivity and...

A radar experiment was conducted at Kwajalein Atoll, Marshall Islands to investigate the spatial relationship of 1-m equatorial spread-F irregularities to total electron content (TEC) depletion. A high-power radar was operated (1) in a backscatter scan mode to spatially map the distribution of 1-m irregularities, and (2) in a dual-frequency, satellite-track mode to obtain the longitudinal TEC variations. Using the radar data, we show that radar backscatter 'plumes' found in the disturbed,...

Film badge doses are reconstructed for sixteen ships and the residence islands of Enewetak and Kwajalein Atolls resulting from the six nuclear detonations comprising Operation CASTLE (March-May 1954). Fallout from Shots BRAVO and ROMEO was the major source of contamination on most of the ships and islands. Varying amounts of fallout from Shots UNION, YANKEE, and NECTAR contributed somewhat to the total doses of the shipboard and island-based personnel; no fallout was experienced as a result of...

Re-entry weather encountered by Minuteman tests PVM-4 and PVM-3 is described in this report. Documentation was accomplished by WC-135B and WB-57F aircraft, by radar, and by lidar. Weather was essentially clear for each mission except for high thin cirrus layer clouds (water content less than 0.003 gm/cum) encountered by PVM-4. Low level clouds were present on each day. Data from all sources are presented, and operational problems of the weather documentation plan are discussed.

Measurements of atmospheric temperature, density, and wind have been used to derive consistent hydrostatic models representative of the atmospheric properties at Kwajalein Atoll, Marshall Islands. A mean annual model and 12 monthly models of thermodynamic properties have been constructed between altitudes of 0 and 120 km, using data available up to 1979. Below an altitude of 60 km, the models are based on a data base that is large enough for the monthly variations to be statistically...

ALTAIR is an experimental radar installation. Its 150-ft-diam antenna dish is supported by a four-legged frame that rotates on a 118-ft circular track. The track is centrally located on a 9-ft-wide ring-beam foundation. Four radial ribs and a cable tunnel connect to the beam and act as stiffeners. The subsurface materials consist of coral sand and rock. The antenna dish operates in two modes: elevation (vertical) and azimuth (horizontal). The elevation is changed by rotating the dish about a...

The Kwajalein Missile Range (KMR) has embarked on a four-year major modernization program in which much of the Range instrumentation will be upgraded. The major benefits to KMR are improved efficiency and reduced cost of operation. High maintenance, unique components will be replaced with commercial off-the-shelf equipment. Sensors are being reconfigured to incorporate common architectures, where practical, resulting in common parts sparing, and reduced maintenance staffing. The new...

A drinkable chloride concentration is 250 mg/L; ocean water chloride concentration is 35,000 mg/L. The only well not contaminated had a history of Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) contamination.
