This report summarizes a theoretical study of the detectability of high altitude (10 km) thin cirrus clouds by various remote sensors over the tropical Pacific. The remote sensors considered include: (1) visual detection from the surface, (2) visual detection from an aircraft, and (3) infrared sensor (6.7 micrometers) from space. The radiative transfer technique to compute the atmospheric radiance (intensity) is summarized. The optical properties of ice crystals are presented. The results...

Modern surveys of ectoparasites and potential vector-borne pathogens in the Republic of the Marshall Islands and Wake Island are poorly documented. We report on field surveys of ectoparasites from 2010 with collections from dogs, cats, and rats. Five ectoparasites were identified: the cat flea Ctenocephalides felis, a sucking louse Hoplopleura pacifica, the mites Laelaps nuttalli and Radfordia ensifera, and the brown dog tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus. Ectoparasites were screened for rickettsial...

In assessing the reactions of states in Oceania to U.S. security policy, focus is most often placed on the South Pacific. Even there, the island states are generally ignored as Australia and New Zealand dominate the discussions. This overlooks the contribution of the island states, especially the Freely Associated States (FAS, also referred to as the Compact States) of the North Pacific. The Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI), and the Republic of Palau...

Modern military communication, navigation, and surveillance systems depend on reliable, noise-free transionospheric radio-frequency channels. They can be severely impacted by small-scale electron-density irregularities in the ionosphere, which cause both phase and amplitude scintillation. Basic tools used in planning and mitigation schemes are climatological in nature and thus may greatly over- and under-estimate the effects of scintillation in a given scenario. This report summarizes the...

Re-entry weather encountered by Minuteman tests PVM-4 and PVM-3 is described in this report. Documentation was accomplished by WC-135B and WB-57F aircraft, by radar, and by lidar. Weather was essentially clear for each mission except for high thin cirrus layer clouds (water content less than 0.003 gm/cum) encountered by PVM-4. Low level clouds were present on each day. Data from all sources are presented, and operational problems of the weather documentation plan are discussed.

Power-spectral analysis of 8 mo of upper winds for Kwajalein shows significant peaks for 850 and 200 mb in the frequency band between 2.5 and 4 days. This is interpreted as the result of migrating perturbations with a wavelength of from 1000 to 2000 km moving with the trade wind. At 300 mb, the most pronounced peak is centered at 17 days; it is presumably a result either of slow-moving perturbations of a larger scale than those embedded in the trades or of meridional oscillations in the zonal...
