After more than a decade of sober political dramas and socially minded period pieces, the great Japanese director Masaki Kobayashi shifted gears dramatically for this rapturously stylized quartet of ghost stories. Featuring colorfully surreal sets and luminous cinematography, these haunting tales of demonic comeuppance and spiritual trials, adapted from writer Lafcadio Hearn’s collections of Japanese folklore, are existentially frightening and meticulously crafted. This version of Kwaidan...

"In Ghostly Japan" by Lafcadio Hearn (1899) - EPUB and MOBI format Book Description: The Japanese have two kinds of ghosts in their folklore—the spirits of the dead, and the spirits of the living. These are the first 10 chapters (including the short preface) of Lafcadio Hearn's non-fiction travelogue "Two Years in The French West Indies", Part I (1889), from Project Gutenberg E-book #6381. It is a vivid account of a trip into a world that hasn't changed much (in some places) in over a century. Some of his descriptions of the natives are of the time of course -- rather odd for a white guy who married and had a son with a Japanese lady to be making rather racist observations --...

Anthony of Egypt lived in Egypt from 251-356. Athanasius of Alexandria wrote The Life of Anthony about 360. Much, much later Gustave Flaubert wrote The Temptation of St. Anthony (1874). Lafcadio Hearn translated the book into English. Athanasius wrote that Anthony had suffered from demons so Flaubert put it into a new form. This video is part one of a series of video's I'm doing on Flaubert's book and including some of the artwork done in the 1500's concerning the temptation of St Anthony....
