Ultrasonic waves suffer energy flux deviation in graphite/epoxy because of the large anisotropy. The angle of deviation is a function of the elastic coefficients. For nonlinear solids, these coefficients and thus the angle of deviation is a function of stress. Acoustoelastic theory was used to model the effect of stress on flux deviation for unidirectional T300/5208 using previously measured elastic coefficients. Computations were made for uniaxial stress along the x3 axis fiber axis) and the...

An overview is presented of the types of problems that are being considered by control theorists in the area of dynamic large scale systems with emphasis on decentralized control strategies. Approaches that deal directly with decentralized decision making for large scale systems are discussed. It is shown that future advances in decentralized system theory are intimately connected with advances in the stochastic control problem with nonclassical information pattern. The basic assumptions and...

Complementary and p-channel MOS integrated circuits made by four commercial manufacturers were investigated for sensitivity to radiation environment. The circuits were irradiated with 1.5 MeV electrons. The results are given for electrons and for the Co-60 gamma radiation equivalent. The data are presented in terms of shifts in the threshold potentials and changes in transconductances and leakages. Gate biases of -10V, 10V and zero volts were applied to individual MOS units during irradiation....

The conditions in which hydrochloric acid aerosol is predicted by the interaction of hydrogen chloride gas with the water vapor in humid air are analyzed. The liquid gas phase equilibrium for the HCL-H2O system is expressed in terms of relative humidity and hydrogen chloride concentration as parts per million, units commonly used in pollution studies. Presented are the concentration (wt ) of HC1 in the aerosol and the concentration of aerosol (ppm) predicted.

Intermediate layers of chromium, nickel, and/or iron have been sputtered on titanium substrates. In the latter cases, upon subsequent chromium electrodeposition, adherence was localized and nonuniform. Chromium electrodeposits on chromium intermediate-sputtered layers, however, were uniform and adherent as indicated by bend tests. Experimental procedures are described and results are discussed.

The finding of Midwest Research Institute (MRI) is that the economic impact of NASA research and development expenditures is substantial. NASA's role in the economic and technological growth of the United States is also substantial as illustrated in two case studies: digital communications and civil aeronautics performance and efficiency. In addition, it has been clear that NASA has also had an impact in a broad range of technological areas. During the course of conducting the study, some 250...

Aluminum alloy samples were plasma sprayed with a Titanium-Nickel-Chrome coating or a Titanium coating. Single and multiple pass experiments were performed with both a pinned and a pinless FSP tool at rotation speeds of 400, 800 and 1500 revolutions per minute; all traverses were done at four inches per...

This thesis represents a step forward in a program to provide the Department of Defense (DOD) alternative approaches to the production of anti-corrosion metal coatings. Specifically, a method was developed to make micron thick but irregular nickel coatings on iron, based on Reduction Expansion Synthesis (RES) chemistry. Previous success using RES processes to make sub-micron nickel, iron, and alloy particles provided a general direction to the program and led to the successful protocol....

During the Apollo Program, General Magnaplate Corporation developed process techniques for bonding dry lubricant coatings to space metals. The coatings were not susceptible to outgassing and offered enhanced surface hardness and superior resistance to corrosion and wear. This development was necessary because conventional lubrication processes were inadequate for lightweight materials used in Apollo components. General Magnaplate built on the original technology and became a leader in...

Molybdenum disulfide films 300 to 400 A thick were rf sputtered on aluminum and nickel surfaces at elevated, ambient, and liquid nitrogen temperatures. Electron transmission micrographs and electron diffraction patterns were taken to determine the structural growth. These transmission micrographs revealed that sputtered MoS2 films at ambient and elevated temperatures (320 and 150 C) formed an irregular network of ridges. The electron diffraction patterns of these films showed relatively sharp...

A metal oxide coating is plated onto a metal substrate at the cathode from an acid solution which contains an oxidizing agent. The process is particularly useful for producing solar panels. Conventional plating at the cathode avoids the presence of oxidizing agents. Coatings made in accordance with the invention are stable both at high temperatures and while under the influence of high photon flux in the visible range.

Corrosion protection of high strength fasteners is of utmost importance due to the critical nature of structural loads transferred through them and their potential for galvanic corrosion. Therefore, adequate corrosion protection is a necessity to sustain both the structural integrity of fastener connections and to prevent preferential corrosion of connected members at the expense of galvanically-coupled fasteners. Traditionally, electroplated cadmium layers and hexavalent chromium rinses have...
