The Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient is recognized as the basic equation for relationship. Well-known and widely used derivatives of the Pearson equation include the point-biserial correlation, the Spearman rank- difference correlation, the fourfold point correlation, and the correlation ratio. Expression of relationships between categorical variables has previously been possible only by means of the contingency coefficient. This paper describes an extension of Pearson's basic...

An analysis was made of the concept of aviator's vertigo based upon personal interviews with Naval aviators. To clarify the term, factors in the environment and experience of pilots are presented which bear upon the use of the word ''vertigo.'' Types of events associated with ''vertigo'' are described. Suggestions are offered for clarification of the concept of vertigo, and lines of further research indicated.

A large body of data has been accumulated in a continuing epidemiological study of naval aviators. It was necessary to explore methods which would allow expression of important relationships which could be investigated furthur. An IBM 1620 computer has been used to construct a large matrix of correlation coefficients for this purpose. The relationships among data from three examinations conducted over a period of years on a group of healthy young men are presented in the form of correlation...

Most peer rating formats require the rater to nominate a specified number of his group members to the top and bottom positions in the group in terms of some particular trait or ability. When these nominations are pooled, there are frequently members of the group who are not named as either high or low (unrated group). The usual procedure has been to assign an average (i.e. mean) score to such individuals. However, it seems possible that, for the prediction of many criteria, the fact that a man...

Electrocardiograms of four monkeys were recorded during exposure of the animals to air slowly heated 5 -8C above room level. Neither rectal nor skin temperature was affected. Deceleration of the heart and increase in T-wave amplitude under these conditions are noteworthy phenomena. Heart rate and respiration rate increased and T-wave...

low scores on peer ratings of leadership potential have been shown to predict failure to complete the Naval Air Training Program. It is hypothesized here, however, that low peer ratings awarded by reason of anti-social personality traits are invalid as predictors of training failure and that the predictiveness of low peer ratings would be improved by removing such cases from the sample. Of 278 low-rated cadets, 73 were identified as having been low- rated for anti-social reasons. There were...

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the relative validities of the components of the pre-flight officer-like-quality grade (OLQ) and the weights which, when applied to these components, would yield the most valid composite grade. The current procedure of using plus and minus factors for cadet rank, activities, and demerits makes the OLQ grade less accurate as a predictor of subsequent attrition. Weightings of .4, .2, .4 for average peer rating, average instructor rating, and...

The report presents a 'test case' for the validity of the officer- like qualities rating, together with analyses of the validity of other measures of 'nontechnical' aspects of training. These include peer nominations, cadet officership, and records of delinquency and demerits. Certain internal properties of the OLQ rating are examined, especially the incidence of substandard checks. The criterion of validity was judgment of acceptability as an officer made by senior officers in the fleet. In...

The extent of increase in ventilation due to inhalation of carbon dioxide at 15,000 feet is approximately equal to that obtained at sea level when carbon dioxide tensions are the same under the two conditions. Respiratory exchange at sea level while breathing 5 per cent carbon dioxide (36 mm. Hg. tension) was 2.25 times that while breathing air. At 15,000 feet, 9.25 per cent carbon dioxide (35 mm. Hg. tension) was required to obtain the same change in ventilation. Pronounced variability in...

Objective check-flight booklets were developed and tested in the presolo and basic-instrument stages. Reliability coefficients were computed from successive independent check rides on 100 students graded by the existing check-flight forms. The ride-ride reliability was not increased by the new objective forms. It was concluded that the complexity of the new forms made them impractical for routine use. More than 1 check flight should be given to provide reasonably accurate prediction.

Results from three analytic approaches to the records of 548 cadets demonstrate that when deal ing with a population having generally above average intelligence there is little reason to take into consideration rather intelligence when concerned with the validity of the ratings he gives. This is also true for the Peer Rating score received by the rater.

The autokinetic, oculogyral, and oculogravic illusions all involve apparent motion or displacement of the visual field with respect to an observer. It is shown that these illusions are related to involuntary eye movements, occurring either spontaneously as in the autokinetic illusion, or in response to the special stimuli associated with the other two illusions. During fixation the visual sensation of movement seems to be produced by, or related to, the pattern of efferent activity aimed at the...
