“Awfully predictable” “Ultimately unsatisfying” (IMDB reviews quotes). Hollywood’s idea of upper-class sophistication in a poorly directed, stodgy drawing room romance. The claim it’s a comedy doesn’t match the reality. Don’t blame the cast for this misfire. Recommended only as an example of what was wrong with some early talkies. IMDB rating 6.2. “A true curiosity” (IMDB review quote). This crime melodrama is a fascinating example of how as late as 1930 some actors and directors were still learning to adapt to the medium of sound-film. It also is a good example of how a bad movie can be a lot of fun. Ned Sparks’ over-the-top performance as a crotchety old crime author steals the show. The flat contrast and brightness of the existing IA print as been considerably enhanced. A lively and entertaining whodunit in spite of the miscasting of Eddie Quillan as Ellery Queen. Charlotte Henry costars at the head of a large cast. The complex plot is loosely based on Frederic Dannay’s novel “The Mandarin Orange Mystery.” IMDB rating 5.3.
