The objectives are to help graduate students formulate and tackle innovative research problems in GFD. To promote an exchange of knowledge and ideas between investigators in the different scientific disciplines that deal with the dynamics of stratified and rotating fluids. To formulate tractible, important problems which are presently at...

The long-term goal is to develop a compact and low cost Bioluminescence (BL) measuring Bathyphotometer. This real time system can be hull mounted, towed, moored, or used as an over the side instrument. The low cost design allows it to be used as an expendable for underway measurements. The economy and simplicity of this instrument will allow investigators to make bioluminescence an affordable measurement.

Our goal is to develop a biomarker of decompression stress in cetaceans. After undertaking a baseline experiment in Steller sea lions, this project will compare and contrast health, body condition, and presence of bubbles with markers for decompression stress in mass stranded cetaceans, and compare these indices with single stranded individuals. Single stranded animals are often free of bubbles while bubbles are common in mass stranded animals. We will also obtain baseline samples from captive...

Particular emphasis is placed on the development and application of high-endurance, low-cost, intelligent vehicles capable of coordinated operation within the framework of an autonomous oceanographic sampling network. Our research strategy is to combine technology development activities with well-defined and important oceanographic...

The long term goal of our shallow water acoustics work is to understand the nature of low frequency (10-1500 Hz) acoustic propagation and scattering in shallow water when strong oceanic variability in the form of fronts, eddies, boundary layers, and internal waves is present. The long term goal of our FY06 fieldwork planning and preparation task is to develop and eventually execute a scientifically sound and Navy relevant basic research experiment in shallow water acoustics, concentrating on...

The theory of internal tidal waves is briefly reviewed in a demonstration of the importance of simultaneous observations at different positions. An analysis of data from 4 oceanographic stations indicated internal tidal waves with reasonable certainty in only 1 case. A series of data covering more than 2 or 3 days was considered necessary to permit a decision as to reality of internal tidal waves.

The DTAG was originally developed to record an animal s responses to acoustic stimuli, such as naval sonar signals, and the traditional method for deploying these non invasive (suction cup) tags on large and mid-sized cetaceans has been to use long carbon fiber poles (Moore et al. 2001, Johnson and Tyack 2003). This technique works well with some of the large whales, but some midsized cetaceans (e.g., beaked whales, minke whales) tend to be quicker, more maneuverable, and elusive, making pole...

The overall goal of this project is to increase the longevity of suction cup attachments for short term archival tags such as the DTAG. Specifically, we are working to extend the routine attachment duration for suction cup tags to multiple days, if not weeks. Methods will be developed to extend tag attachment by streamlining tag housings, selecting appropriate materials for tag/cup assembly, improving suction cup design, understanding the behavior of the attachment surface during attachment,...

The long-term goals of this project are to obtain an understanding of the mechanisms by which tidal energy is used to vertically mix the ocean against the action of gravity. Ultimately better parameterizations of the mixing caused by tides will result, allowing better prediction of coastal dynamics, biogeochemistry and sediment transport and the oceanic general circulation.

Our long-term goal is to determine whether lateral mixing at O(1-10 km) scales is due to a balanced or unbalanced downscale cascade from the mesoscale, or due to local vertical mixing by internal waves and surface forcing. Our work is testing hypothesis 3 of the white paper Scalable Lateral Mixing and Coherent Turbulence: Non-quasigeostrophic, submesoscale instabilities feed a forward cascade of energy, scalar and Ertel PV variance, which enhances both isopycnal and diapycnal mixing. The mixing of tracers on the surface of a sphere has many geophysical applications from the advection of volcanic ash to the global redistribution of temperature and angular momentum by atmospheric general circulation. Due to the difficulties of spherical geometry, such as the poles and the isotropy between the meridional and zonal directions, previous work on optimal mixing focuses instead on the d-dimensional torus [5, 7, 8]. Here we are motivated by the geophysical problem of temperature...

Collaborative with the PHILEX team in two separate areas is described. One involves stirring, mixing and Lagrangian predictability at the surface of the Phillipine Archipelago. This work uses dynamical system theory in combination with model and observations by other investigators in the PHILEX program. The second area concerns the deep circulation and, in particular, the overflow over the Panay Sill and its consequences for ventilation of the deep Sulu Sea.

The long-term goal of this work is to understand the ocean s circulation in the bifurcation region of the Kuroshio and Mindanao Currents. The westward flowing North Equatorial Current runs into the Philippine coast and bifurcates into the northward Kuroshio and the southward Mindanao Current. The partitioning of the flow into the Kuroshio and Mindanao Currents is an important observable. Quantifying these flows and understanding bifurcation dynamics are essential to improving predictions of...

In May 1988 in response to a request for proposal under the Defense University Research Instrument Program, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (W. H. O. I.) proposed replacement of two hydrographic winches and the trawl winch on the Research Vessels KNORR (AGOR 15). It was proposed that the replacements occur during the mid-life refit and stretch that was then in the planning stages. The Office of Naval Research (ONR) funded the replacement of one winch, and W. H. O. I. elected to replace the...

Sightings of right whales, Eubalaena glacialis, in Massachusetts waters have been recorded by workers at Wood Hole Oceanographic Institution since 1955. These observations do not represent a census, because emphasis was placed on studying the whales' underwater sounds and other activities. The number of yearly sightings varied from 2 to 165. Observations were made from aircraft, boats, and occasionally from shore.

On-o intermittency refers to the special pattern of time series which experience long time periods of calm behavior followed by short periods at bursting. In particular, the Ricker Map, which is a model of the discrete evolution of the expected population of one species at a given generation is implemented to generate on-o intermittency. The on-o intermittency generated by the Ricker Map also exhibits the main characteristics found in other dynamical systems. On-o intermittency in a locally...
