Eddie Wolf is a musician and retired teacher who plays and appreciates really good music, particularly jazz age tunes. He considers his musical mentor to be Ross Gorman, who gained fame playing with Paul Whiteman's Orchestra, playing the opening clarinet glissando on the Rhapsody in Blue. Gorman was Eddie's music teacher and made a fine reeds man out of Mr. Wolf. Eddie had a ton of 78 rpm recordings that he "bequeathed" to my custody to record and organize. I am finally getting around...

The melding of fact and fiction involves the writer both as a realist and a visionary. The writer must become that paradox, of seeing the ordinary with a conscious insight thus creating a vision linked with a larger meaning. This is how history reaches its culmination in the services of art, when experiences look to literature for their ideal. A sort of order is imposed on the jumbled experience of the writer. It is an ordering of the material of life into the material of art. Fiction becomes a...

SMITH BALLEW Don't know much about the particulars of the interviews. Took place in Texas, perhaps in the mid to late 1960s and on at least two separate dates and locations (Temple U. being one). Smith reminisces with a couple of fellows. They chat a bit about specifics and then spin a few 78s they've just been talking about. This is paired down from the original tape, with just one song between each bit of talking. The interview is broken into five parts of roughly 30 minutes each. Not even...

Sept. 24, 2021 marks the quasquicentennial, or 125th anniversary, of F. Scott Fitzgerald's birth. Indeed, the "Great Gatsby" author has been buried in Rockville for more than 80 years. For the rest of eternity, F. Scott Fitzgerald rests at St. Mary's Catholic Church Cemetery, sharing the same plot of land with his wife Zelda, where they are surrounded by five generations of Fitzgerald family members. To this day, and especially around Fitzgerald's birthday, passersby visit the...
