As the Elementary students wondered into the
school in the fall, they found new carpet on the floors.
The change couldn’t be missed since the color
changed the looks of the building. As they ventured
farther into the school they found Vicki Recknor in
the 3rd grade room and a new teacher, Deb Vitera, in
the Kindergarten room. For the Christmas of Sharing

project each class visited a local care home and sang. Kelli Stevens Haley Stromburg Chelsie Walker

As the year went on you noticed
footprints on the wall of the school.
For the Reading Incentive Project this
year, the students received a foot
cutout for each required amount of
reading. Ten small feet earned a Big

Tearing It Up
with academics

The academic subjects at school are often an
overlooked area for the annual. But yet, where would we
be without academics? We certainly would not havea
annual to put together, because there would be no school
or activities to include in the year's highlights.

The students often remember their high school
years with the activities they were involved in, but the
ground work for success in life and in activities is laid
out in the classroom.

"In the real world" was a quote often heard from
the teachers. It's the academic subjects that do that for
the students. Students worked hard completing the
required assignments for classroom work. Lots of effort is
put forth as well as having fun doing the work load
assigned by the teachers.

Polk-Hordville believes in providing the best
possible educational program for each individual stu-
dent. From the learning activities that take place in the
classrooms to the experiences the students get to work
with, that is being accomplished.

The goal of the next few pages is to show you
some of the hard work that is done everyday by the
students and teachers at Polk-Hordville High School.

had to retire early because of
health. A replacement for Don
couldn't be found soon enough
for spring work to be done around
the school, so the students helped
out. As you can see; some worked
hard and others found a way to
look busy. A good time was had
by all, especially when pop and
candy bars were brought out for
the break.

The Wildcats went
through many changes this
year in football. There were
a lot of unexperienced
players but they quickly
caught on. This year was
somewhat disappointing to
the players because for the
last seven years they were
CRC Champs, but this year
it wasn't in their favor. This
didn't pull them down too
much because they got right

They all worked hard together

Over-all they placed 2nd

The season started slowly for the Wildcats
in the won-loss column. Inexperience showed
during the begining of the season with injuries
also taking their toll. The month of December
ended with a 1-6 record with two very close
losses. After the holiday break the 'Cats came on
strong with a 6-6 record to finish 7-12 overall.

As the season progressed the Polk-Hordville team
gained more experience and their confidence level
rose as well. This should be an indicator that next
year's team will work at improving this year's
record.

There were some individual performances
to note as well. Josh Bridges tied a Crossroads
Tournament record by hitting six 3-pointers ina
game vs. Friend and also achieved double figures
in points and rebounds several times. Shawn
Shoup and Nolan Sundberg also enjoyed double
figure outings in points and rebounds during
many games as well. Cameron Hudson led the
team in assits from the point guard position,
Casper Palmqvist provided some excitement with
slam dunks during two JV contests as well as per-
forming well during Varsity competiiton, and Ben
Garrett provided valuable minutes as a freshman.

We will mis Shawn, Joe and Casper. While

these players were important to the team, next yeat's

players are eagerly awiating next season.

Misti trying to think about a game winning strategy.

The girl's basketball season this year was one of hustle
and quickness. The WildCats were not ever in an over-power-
ing situation. But their determined minds to win, even if they
were out-heigthened, made them work even harder for the
victory and made it more than just another win. Mr. Jacobsen
tried different things with these girls and most of his ideas
worked extremely well. The girls accomplished many goals
together as a team. They brought home the 2nd place trophy in
the CRC Tournament and also got 2nd in regular season play.
As Districts roled around the team was determined to get back
at the rival, Clarks. They finally came out with the win in
overtime. In Sub-District final they lost to Silver Creek. Their
seaon turned out to be a great seaon and led to great accom-
plishments for the team. Their record ended up to be 13-8.

Stevens crownbearers.

Homecoming this year was a little different.

The week started off with dress-up days. Thursday
night a community parade and pep rally was held in
downtown Polk. The parade consisted of the
Polk-Hordville Marching Band, and the Fire
Department, decorated cars and a float competition.
First place went to the Senior class for their float
"Breakfast of Champions."

The pep rally had a skit by the senior mothers
where they provided "go" juice for the athletes, so
they could have get-up-and-go for the games.

The Senior's mothers prepared the juice and Jane
Nyberg stirred the juice with that witches special touch.

One exception to Homecoming might be that there was
no football game to be held; Bradshaw had to forfeit to us because of the
lack of football players. But the volleyball team came away with a victory
with a 2 set match 15-3, 15-5.

Coronation was held after the volleyball game in the gym.

The 1993 King and Queen was Shawn Shoup and Jaymi Recknor. The 1992
King and Queen, Shane Samuels and Ginger Sagehorn did the honors of
handing down the crown with the help of the crown bearers Jonathan
Keeney and Kelli Stevens. First attendants were Scott Hoffman and Misti
Fowler. Second attendants were Joe Mowitz and Denise Van Housen. A
dance followed after the coronation.

Tearing It Up

_ “=~ A Quick Look
a ., A Year

The summer of 1993 brought the mighty floods to the
Mississippi Valley. The mighty Mississippi engulfed
towns, farms, and houses; nothing could hide from the
Mississippi. The dams and levees could not even tame
the Mississippi. The rain seemed to keep coming and
coming; some people thought it would never stop. It

was the wettest summer to take place. Des Monies lowa
aden were without water for weeks due to the flooding. In some places the water was 10 feet

above flood stage. The cost of the flood went into the millions.

Many sat wondering if it would be safe to travel into Miami
Florida after another tourist was killed. That kind of vio-
lence led to a series of wars with T.V. violence. Some
people believed that the violence on the street was due to
the violence on T.V. The movie, The Program, came out
with a scene showing kids lying in the middle of a highway
and not getting run over. Some people thought it would be
cool to try it in real life and some of them got run over and ; ;
died. The hit show Beavis & Butthead got moved to a later time slot after two little kids got the

idea of starting their house on fire from the show. The real question that was asked-who really is the
victim of T.V. violence?

The world watched Moscow when Boris Yeltsin fired
the parliament, because Yeltsin wanted early
elections and the parliament didn't. The parliament
wouldn't come out of the White House and the
world thought maybe Russia would break out into
Civil War. Instead Yeltsin ordered the army to
bomb the White House. After that the parliament
leaders finally surrendered to Yelstien showing
that communism is dead.

The Nebraska Lottery started up this year for the first time. Some \ \NEER = RASK LY, ?

people wondered if it would lead to more problems, but so far
it is going smoothly. Some lucky person could win 50,000
dollars playing the lottery. Nebraska was also faced with many
murders this year. One strange one happened in Humboldt
where three people were killed.

The world of Hollywood was busy this year with its gossip. The first
shock was to hear of the news that Julia Roberts was marrying Lyle Lovett. Then the news that the
perfect Hollywood marriage was ending-Burt Reynolds and Loni Anderson were getting a divorce. It
was the nastiest divorce in Hollywood. Michael Jackson's perfect world came crashing down when
allegations were made of sexual abuse of a 13-year-old boy. Hollywood was also stunned when River
Phoenix pst ion dead in front of a club at the age of 23 of a drug overdose.
is Well, President Clinton had a busy first year in signing treaties. It
started with the Israeli and Palestinian treaty. Then the Presi-
dent had a hard time getting NAFTA through congress, but he
did it. Then the Brady Bill got passed that made a five day
waiting period a law when buying a handgun. Clinton ap-
pointed the second woman to the Supreme Court, Ruth
Ginsburg. Clinton also started on the Health Care Reform with
the help of Hillary. The Clintons were also faced with the
Whitewater dealing. Some people believed that the Clintons in
the dealing broke the law.
It seemed like one natural disaster was happening right
after the another. The fires in California raged for
weeks and it seemed like nothing could stop them.
Nothing could stand in the way of the fires; homes
were burned down to the ground. Many acres were
burned in the fires. People were told to leave their
house but some stayed behind and ended up leaving

in January; den state was hit with an 6.6 earthquake that § ‘
destroyed parts of L.A. It seemed that the California
dream was vanishing!!! PS — -
Michael Jordan called it quits after winning the NBA cham-
pionship three years in a row. He said he was "returning
to earth and he had nothing else to prove." The Toronto
Blue Jays victory over the Phillies in the sixth game of
the 1993 World Series gave them the championship for
the second time in a row. In college football the Ne-
braska Cornhuskers played for the national championship
and lost it at the last second. They should have won!!! In
the Superbowl] the Dallas Cowboys and the Buffalo Bills
went head to head. It was fourth year straight in the
Superbowl for the Bills. The Cowboys won making it
four straight losses for the Bills and two straight wins for

themselves. MINIMAG 81

COLOPHON

The 1994 Wildcat is the seventh yearbook produced by Polk-
Hordville students.

The book was printed by Walsworth Publishing Company in
Marceline, Missouri. Gregg Adams, from Lincoln, Nebraska, was the
sales representative.

A variety of layout styles were used throughout the book. The
type set for the body of the book was Palatino. Body copy was 10-point,
captions were 8-point and headlines were a variety of sizes and type sets.

The paper stock used for the book was 80-bound enamel. The
endsheets were printed on white gloss stock paper.

The cover was designed by Kati Paalamo, our foreign exchange
student from Finland. We also used her design throughout the book on
the endsheets and other pages.

The laminated cover was done in colors of 80% and 50% Royal
Blue, Black and 100% Grass Green. The name stamp was done in Silver.

Four-color processing was used in the fifth signature for the
senior page.

Pictures used were taken by the annual staff and processing
done through the Walgreen Drug Store in Grand Island, Nebraska. The
underclassmen photos were taken by Life-Touch , the group sports
pictures by T&L Photography in Aurora, Nebraska, and the senior
portraits were taken by a variety of photography studios in the area.

For the second year we included an academic section in the
annual. We wanted to prove that the school year is not all play. Hard
work is done everyday by the students and teachers at the Polk-Hord-
ville Schools.

There were 110 books printed, each containing 82 pages. Prices
for the yearbook were $17.00, without name on the cover, and $19.00,
with name on the cover, for early buyers. The price went up to $20.00 for
the late buyers.

Special thanks to the class members for their hard work through-
out the year. Seniors, Scott Hoffman and Mitch Hahn, three-year mem-
bers. Seniors, Denise Van Housen and Daylene Chang and Junior,
Carissa Smelker, two-year members. Seniors, Shawn Shoup and Jenny
Holtorf and Sophomore, Andrew Saeger, one-year members. And
especially to Kati Paalamo, one-year member, for all the art work she
designed for the book. Linda Gilson was the advisor.

Also a big thank you to the students, faculty, administrators and
parents for their cooperation for allowing photos to be taken of them
throughout the year and for purchasing a yearbook and/or ads.
