Important Parking Information
All Students, Faculty, Staff and Visitors are required to display a
valid MSMC Parking Permit by September 7, 2004.
For added convenience daily parking passes can be purchased
at the Entrance Kiosk ($2.00 per day).
Students, faculty, staff and visitors who feel a citation was issued in error or improperly
are encouraged to file a Parking Ticket Appeals with the Facilities Management
Department within TEN (10) calendar days from the issuance of the ticket. Late appeals
(after the 10 calendar days) or appeals that are vague or incomplete will not be
reviewed. All appeals must be Typed or Printed clearly. Please limit your appeal to the
facts directly related to the issuance of the ticket. The parking ticket appeals form is
available at the Business Office, Switchboard, or at the Facilities Management
Department.
Unpaid citations are posted to Student Business Office Account on a Monthly Basis.
Copies of Citations can be obtained from the Facilities Management department at the
Chalon Campus.
Citations Posted to a Student's account CANNOT be Appealed. At the time of posting,
the grace period of 10 calendar days would have expired.
The Parking Committee has approved the purchase of two "boots" to assist with
parking enforcement. Security will install the "boots" on a vehicles wheel with a third
and subsequent parking citation. The boot will make the vehicle inoperative. The boot
may only be removed by Security after the vehicle's owner has shown proof that all
outstanding parking fines have been paid to the Business office. This procedure will
reduce the frequency of towing from campus. Students have expressed concern that we
"should have called them first" before towing their car. The use of a "boot" will hold the
vehicle's owner responsible for the violations but will reduce the financial impact and
minimize the inconvenience of recovering their vehicle.
Student car pool permits are available at the Student Activities and Commuter Services
office at the 1st floor of the Chalon Humanities Building.

received, enrollment status and dates of attendance.
FERPA (Family Education Rights and Privacy Act) is a law that was passed to guard your

All members of the Mount community are invited; we would truly appreciate those who

DID YOU KNOW that women in their 20's report a higher level of
personal distress than women in any other age group? According
to researchers at George Washington University, women in their
twenties reported more psychological hardships caused by
financial, relationship and emotional difficulties than women
from age thirty to sixty. Certainly having concerns about money
and relationships are common to college students. Talking with
a professional about your worries and concerns can relieve your anxiety
and help you to find solutions to your problems. Don't wait until you can't sleep at night or

From Counseling and Psychological Services :
Stxeat ffiuAtm foe the Week
People say college is supposed to be great, but many students feel like they
are just out of it, disconnected and alone. They feel sad, trapped by inertia,
hopeless and not "up to the challenge" of college.
If you feel that way and you can't shake yourself out of it no matter what you do, you might be
suffering from clinical depression. Depression is more than just a bad day, the result of a bad
grade or anxiety about the future. It is a treatable disorder that can leave you feeling so bad that
you forget how it feels to feel good.
Counseling & Psychological Services is offering FREE depression screening on Tues, Oct 5 from
1 1 am to 2pm at the Ahmanson Commons (cafeteria driveway). You can take a quick self-test and
talk with a counselor about ways to get help.
If you would like to talk to someone about time management or other concerns, call ext.
2668 to schedule an appointment with a counselor. Counseling is free and confidential.
You will find us in Building 7. Office hours: Tues., Wed., and Thurs., from 8:30 to 4:30 p.m.

people of every faith - participate in this wonderful celebration!
Would you like to sing in the choir for the Mass, please

> The faculty and staff honored by the "Remarkable Service" award of the SSCC
(Student Services Coordinating Council)
> The Student Ambassadors
> Faculty, Staff and Students who serve the Los Angeles community through

The Mass of the Holy Spirit is celebrated in most Catholic institutions, as a way of
gathering the community to call upon the Spirit of Wisdom. At the Mount, we celebrate this
Mass in October - still early in the year, and also the anniversary month of the founding of
the college and the Sisters of St. Joseph.
Be sure to wear red that day !

IftfiHV DO I NEED TO COMPLETE 30 UNITS A SEMESTER?
Usually, students try to complete 30 units in a semester. Freshmen are students with less
than 30 units. A number of you are freshmen even though you're in your second year at
MSMC. Sophomores have 30 or more units but less than 60. Juniors have 60 or more
units but less than 90. Doheny students with 60 or more units will always be sophomores
because this is a two-year program. Sometimes how much financial aid you get or
whether you qualify for loans depends on your standing. If you're a freshman, you don't
get the loans that a sophomore gets.

Are you unhappy with your reflection in the mirror or spend time wishing that parts
of your body looked different? Do you exercise so much that you feel fatigued or
get hurt often? Learning to accept your appearance in a healthy manner can be
difficult, but extreme dieting can jeopardize your health. Did you know that 10
million women and 1 million men are fighting a life and death battle with an eating
disorder? If you have problems with food or are stressed out about the way you
feel about yourself, it may be time to talk to someone. Don't miss out on living
because you are spending your time finding flaws in front of the mirror.
If you would like to talk to someone about eating problems or other concerns, call
(213) 477-2668 to schedule an appointment with a counselor. Counseling is free and

VOTER INFORMATION
,nd
Every week leading up to the Presidential election on November 2 , a
frequently asked question about voting will appear. Keep you eyes out and get informed!
If you have any questions, feel free to stop by the Women's Leadership Office.
This Week's FAQ:
Where can I get information about the issues on the
ballot? You will receive a sample ballot in the mail that contains all the
issues and candidates in the November 2 nd election. The sample ballot will
provide a small amount of information; however, you will probably need more
in order to make an informed decision. There are many sources for information
on the issues and candidates. Check your local newspapers or newscasts.
There are also a number of non-partisan sites on the Internet. A few of these
are:

as well as information about elections.

Once you access your advisor assignment on WebAdvisor, you may contact
your faculty advisor during office hours and/or schedule an appointment. During
the Advisement Period you will meet with your faculty advisor about your Spring
'05 schedule of classes. It is important that you become familiar with your major
and general education requirements, the course schedule and create a possible
schedule prior to meeting with your faculty advisor. Most students will receive an
email or other communication regarding advisor appointments; HOWEVER, it is
ultimately your responsibility to contact your advisor regarding his/her
appointment schedule during the Advisement period. We also encourage you to
visit with your advisor more than just during "Advisement Period" and build a
relationship with your faculty advisor. This will definitely enhance your academic
experience at the Mount!

Studies show that students who become involved in campus activities
tend to stay in school and have more success in their courses. This
makes good sense. Being active in a club allows you to make friends,
feel useful and responsible, and have more fun. It also encourages
you to manage your time so that you can do well in your classes and
have time for outside activities. If you're feeling disconnected and
lonely, you might want to join a club on campus. The Student Activities Office in Bldg. 7
has a list of all the clubs and their meeting times. Get acquainted with a club; you'll be
glad you did.
If you would like to talk to someone about eating problems or other concerns, call

an informed decision. There are many sources for information on

Are you unhappy or afraid to disagree with your partner because his or
her temper scares you? Is your partner extremely jealous? If your partner breaks
things or has shoved or hit you in any way, you may be in an abusive relationship. If you
are in an abusive or controlling relationship, you are not alone and there are people in
the community who care about your situation and want to help. According to police data
about 1 .3 million American women are reported to have been physically abused by a
current or former intimate partner. If you have problems with an abusive partner, it may
be time to talk to someone. Domestic violence is the single major cause of injury to
American women, please don't become a statistic when there is help.
If you would like to talk to someone about relationship violence or other
concerns, call (213) 477-2668 to schedule an appointment with a counselor.

Stow* flinte* fo* the Week
THE BIG FIVE: A study of college students found that these five types of pressures
seem to cause students the most trouble: Separation from family, Freedom,
Competition, Peer Pressure, and Choosing a Career. These pressures can spur
you on to make decisions and get your life in gear, or they can drag you down.
Sometimes it's hard to make that distinction, but it is essential to your health and
success. Talking to someone about these concerns can be the first step to reducing
your stress and motivating you to make clear-headed decisions.
If you would like to talk to someone about relationship violence or other
concerns, call (213) 477-2668 to schedule an appointment with a counselor.

If you spend a lot of time thinking about what you "should" or
"shouldn't" have done or comparing yourself to others, you may be
suffering from low self-esteem. People with low self-esteem need
more than the average amount of affirmation in order to feel okay
about themselves. If you think that you may be struggling with low
self-esteem, here are some helpful hints:
S Notice differences between yourself and others, but stop comparing yourself to
others
s Surround yourself with people who are positive and supportive; avoid spending time
with people who make you feel bad.
S Challenge your critical self-statements: Example: Instead of thinking, "He didn't
smile at me because he doesn't like me;" try thinking "He didn't smile at me because
he is having a bad day."
s Before you go to bed each night, get into the habit of writing down 5-1 things
that you are grateful for.
If you would like to talk to someone about your self-esteem Issues or other
concerns, call (213) 477-2668 to schedule an appointment with a counselor.
Counseling is free and confidential. You will find us in Building 7. Office hours:
Tues, Wed, and Thurs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

From the Dohetiy Library :
Thoreau's Walden On Display, Honoring Its 150 th Publication Anniversary
The library's display case on the Doheny Campus honors in celebration and
thanksgiving Henry David Thoreau's Walden on its 150 th year since publication. Each
American generation following its debut has used Walden as an example, but not
always the same example. Some have used it as an example of great writing. Others,
as an expression of individualism; or a call for a simpler, less materialistic lifestyle; or for
a return to nature; or for a conservation of natural beauty. Still others read Walden and
find it as an example of social irresponsibility; or a flight from personal responsibility,
maturity, and meaningful labor. Walden has complexity. It can be read on many levels
and cited for many expressions of truth. Few books written in America have stood the
course of time, remaining relevant throughout our ever-changing society. Walden has.
So, please come the library, view our display, and spend time pondering Walden for the
first, second or third time.
