'The nation that has the schools has the future.

DEDICATION

This dedication of the 1949 Arrowhead to our Superintendent of Public
Instruction, J. A. Thompson, most aptly described as a friend, is an honored
privilege enjoyed by the entire student body. Our Senior Class will long
look back to the days spent under Coach Thompson's guidance — an era in
which he showed himself to be not only a superior leader but, more important,
an excellent follower. His appreciated co-operation in following with interest
the activities of students, his organizing ability in sports and social affairs, and
his tireless efforts to make our school a better place in every way will be a
vivid memory to all of us long after school days have become only a pleasant
recollection. We are thankful to be able to dedicate our annual to a man who
has dedicated his life's work to us.

CLASS HISTORY

On the bright sunny morning of September 9, 1945 the Freshman Class of Vero
Beach High School began their journey through the deep forest of education. There
seemed to be no end to this forest as it was our first experience with the paths of
Enghsh, history, algebra, et cetera. Many times we strayed off the paths and plunged
into untrodden places, but with the aid of our teachers and our director, Mr. WiUard
C. Chinn, we were able to regain our foothold. The months quickly passed and before
we realized it, half of our journey was over.

The forest became dense and by the time we had reached the third section of the
forest it became necessary to hire guides — Mr. Hall Godbold and Miss Jeanette Willets.
We penetrated to where the light was less, and the trees of knowledge crouched nearer
and nearer. It became neccessary to choose leaders from our group to assist the guides;
they were Curtis King, Bob White, Mary Lou James, and Carl Greene.

The forest with its mysterious atmosphere, and the trees stripped of their finery
made a perfect setting for our Junior Class Play, "Mystery at Midnight." It also pro-
vided an ideal spot for our long-remembered barbecue.

Now we were more accustomed to the forest and had more time to enjoy our sur-
roundings. So as the dusk advanced on us steadily, we gathered near a beautiful stream
for one of our greatest and happiest times, the Junior-Senior Prom!

Soon after the Prom our guides were relieved by Mrs. Helen Hancock and Mrs.
Madge Longaker. They too felt that group leadership was needed. Our new leaders
were David McCain, Douglas Haag, Marjorie Forney, and Ellen Avis.

Time passed quickly and soon we were passing through the last three important
paths of the forest — Class Night, with its fun and excitement, Baccalaureate, with its
sadness, and last of all. Commencement. As we passed over this last path our thoughts
went back over the enjoyable years we had spent in this forest, friends we had made, and
teachers we would always remember. The experiences of this journey through the
forest of education will help us to be better fitted for whatever task we may encounter.

TO THE CLASS OF 49

Here's to the Class of 49

that we believe is so swell

Here's to the years that have gone by
and the work they've done so well

Their high school with its halls of
learning

Tolerant teachers, green lawns, and

beautiful hedges
Leave nothing to yearning.

May this class ever be mindful of its
distinction won.

May these students always be proud of
their place in the sun.

Look well to this day — for within its boundaries lie all the

heights

and

all the depths of your existence.

For yesterday is but a dream — and tomorrow a vision.

But every today well spent — makes yesterday a dream of

pleasure

and

tomorrow — a vision of happiness.

Sacks of Hollywood hopes that the inspiration of your graduation

will

cast its auro of happiness again and again throughout yo

jr lives.
