A St, tools Melodrama.

A story comes from St. Louis havingi

all tho elements of u thrilling mojo-,
drama.
A young boarding-school miss

wanting hor watch repaired went to Ji
small «stnbli9hment near by. Thoro
wore two men present, ono of whom,
apparently tho worse for liquor, was
rusting hi's head upon tho show-case.
She hunded her watcb to tho other man
standing by, giving directions as to
what should bo done with :it. lie, mj-
Kttrontly on purpose, lot it fall, broulc-
1'ifi; tho crystal; but on his promising to
make it good sho left it with him and
departed.

Subsequently sho returned and asked

for hor watch. The proprietor, who
proved to be tho niun whoso head wns
rusting on the show-ease, denied hav-
ing it. Tho man to whom sho handed
it had disappeared, and hud not re-
turned. Tho proprietor gavo hor an-
othov watch, whioh sho was to k,oop un-
til she recovered her own.
Dirf&tttislied

with the arrangement, tho police were
called in. The proprietor of tho store
insisted that the watch was not in his
possession, but hud been taken away
by thu man to whom
tho
young

liidy
hiuided
it.
Pressed
to
ex-

plain, hn admitted that tho missing man
was a friend of his, but that ho had
proved falsu and treacherous. When
the young woman came to his storo
und found him loaning on tho show
case ho was nearly insensible. In com-
pany with his friend ho had boon drink-
ing n good doal and subsequently ho
.•miuki'd a cigar with him. Tho cigar
was drugged.
Ho became stupoheil,

and while In this state his friend hivd
not only taken the young lady's watch,
but hiuf robbed tlio money-drawer of its
change, tho safe of two hundred dol-
lar-,, and hjs pockets of their contents.
The proprietor awoke noxfi moruirig
iroiu hli bed in a room adjoining his
hhop, und t'omul himself stripped of
much of his property, with Ilk friend
missing.
He nils not seen him since,

Ho made, ho said, thobest reparation iu
his power by giving the young lady
a watch 03 valuable intrinsically as
horn, although as it was a memento of
liar dead mother, it possessed u valuo
which nothing could replace.

If his explanation is true it- is as ro-

mantic as a play »v n story; if ^nnnip,
it does equal jusvieo to :m imagination
which could invent it bo readily ..^De-

Alter a time ho

asked tho pentloman if'ho had hoard
Iho story about how a man traveled
without a ticket. Tho gentleman said
no had not; so tho mftn nsked him to
lend him his ticket, that Bo might show
:iiui how it was done, and began flcl-
llinrr about with it, but prolonged that
ho Story had suddenly slipped oat of

After a tlrao tho

still eould not lomembcr tho story ho
returned tho gontlcuiaa his ticket. This
struck tbo gentleman as being very cu-

When tho mau got to tho barrier and
was asked for his ticket ho said ho hud
given it up, but the ticket-collector de-
nied it, and aller a good daal of alter-

of his pocket and was about to pay for
his faro when he suddenly snld (produc-
ing a small piece of ticket) that he could
prove that ho had given up his ticket,
because ho rcmomberd playing abou,t

Fleurj's Spring Talk!

When purchasing your Spring Outfit how much

pleasanter it is, both to buyer and salesman, to
have a large and well-selected stock to pick from,
If you don't like a Sack Coat, why then there are
lots of Frock Suits to look at. If you consider
them not dressy enough, there is nothing nicer '!
than a Four-Button Cutaway.

All the above mentioned goods we are display-

ing in a variety of styles seldom equaled in ordi-
nary clothing stores, and in conjunction with
these we are showing all Iho nobby and late^f
styles' of Hats, both in soft and stiff; and new >jj
Neckwear in tho most delicate tints and shades., ;,'

Our BOYS' AND CHILDREN'S stock is replete tj

with the latest novelties for the season, not
for-

getting good plain goods for little money. Also
new Hats. We have tho Spinning Top and Base
Ball Hats, which entitles tho purchaser of on j !«J
to either a top or bull.
[,>?

It is generally conceded though that we are at j#I

the top of the hill when speaking ol MERCHANT j, J
TAILORING. In this department we are show- f
ing as fine a line of piece goods as the most fas- v
tidious would wish to select from.
N;

In conclusion we heartily invite your visit*

and are sure it will repay you.

Moonejr to be Hun».

The tough, Michael Moouey, who was

sent up from Mnoon county for tho lar-
ceny of a watch, and last year murdered
hia cell-mate in the Joliet prison, ia to be
hung, as will bo seen from tho following
telegram from Waukegira:

WAOKECIAN, III., Moroh 80.-The Moon-

ey trial, which has dragged ita slow length
over two weeks of timo, came to an end
Saturday at a little past 2 o'clock by a
verdiui %.! guilty after an hour and ft half
consideration on tho purt of the jury, Tbo
penalty of death by hanging WBB decided
upon in the jury room without debate
and almost without hesitancy. Moonoy
received tho verdict with stoical indillor-
enco. Ho says he has nothing to say to
the papers, but states unhesitatingly that
he is better satisfied with tho death pen-
alty than he would be to go back to Job-
et. On the question of his peculiar relig-
ions belief ho says: "I think I'll know
more about that in a couple of weeks or
so."
He evivdontly doea not like tho

"crank" theory of his counsel, and aays:
"I'd rather it would be OB it is than go
out as a crank." Then, hesitating, ho
added, "unless I could go away some-
where where I wouldn't be known." Ho
doesn't blame bis counsel, but says: J'lt
couldn't be nny other way with a convict.
If I had plenty of money it might be dif-
ferent."

Tho murder was ouo of tho most ilcnd-

ish ou record, Anderson having received
over 30 stabs.

The County Folr.

There wore nine members of the Macon

County Agricultural Board present ftt tho
culled meeting held at tho clerk's olllco
Saturday evening. After general discus-
sion it was ordered that n fair bo held
September Hi to 11) inclusive, and Mr.
John O. Imbodeii was appointed as chair-
man of a committee to raise $1500 among
busiuoas men and farmers to guarantee
tho payment of all premiums iu full. It
was tho opinion of those present that the
fair grounds and buildings can bo fixed
up in suitable shape by tho expenditure
of about $COO.

Carpenter to Return to Lincoln.

Wo Uavo it on good authority that O.

A. Carpenter and his wifo will return to
Lincoln from Petersburg to-morrow, and
that Mr. C. will not bo driven or ucaiod
away by tho action of tho "town meeting"
lield last Tuesday. It is also further rop-
roscutod that Mr. Carpenter will prepare
a statement for publication which will
probably appear in the papers. Jt is
stated that the bad feeling that has crop-
ped out has been allayed somewhat, and
lhat Homo oZ those who took part in TIICH-
dny'a meeting have experienced a change
of lioart nnd look upon that gathering us
't littlo foolmh and out of order.

Plans Reaily.

Mr. Potor Loeb requests ua to nunounre

;hat tho plans and Hpecitlcatioim for the
now business block on North Water street
iro now ready, and those wishing to in-
Hpoot them nnd make bids, can do so by
calling at tho foundry office on North
Uruadway.
