Léontine Zanta, en 1914, a été la première femme docteur ès lettres-philosophie,
étant licenciée ès lettres en 1898. Journaliste à L'Écho de Paris, au Figaro, au
Petit Journal, elle appartint au jury du Prix Femina de 1920 à 1942.
Dans ce roman, Madeleine, jeune femme studieuse, idéaliste et passionnée,
fervente croyante, décrit sous forme de journal son quotidien d'étudiante en
première année à La Sorbonne, où ses camarades et elle préparent une licence
de philosophie, tandis que le monde est pris dans la tourmente de la Grande
Guerre.
En cette année 1917, si décisive pour son avenir, à une époque où les "femmes
de science" sont peu nombreuses encore, Madeleine rencontre Jacques... et vit
son premier amour.
