The ogres lost many of their brethren when their vil-
lage was attacked by a masked majin leading an army
oF orcs. While seeking their revenge, they attacked
Rimuru, believing him to be that masked majin. However,
Rimuru was able to clear up the mistake and recruit
them to his cause. Soon-aFter, it was revealed that the
orcs’ next karget would be the wetlands, home to the
lizardmen. While the various monster races worked on
plans to deFend against an army of 200,000, a dryad
claiming to be the protector of the Forest showed up
in Rimuru'’s camp, asking him to vanquish the ore lord.

~STUNNING DEVELOPMENTS~
Veldora's Slime Observation Journal
~PITCHED BATTLE~
LOOSENING GEARS@
So, the dryad Treyni has requested that Rimuru vanquish the orc
lord.
Hrmm...
Her request was rather bold, but I have no doubt that her situation
is dire. She pretends to be confident and in control, but she cannot
deceive me. There is panic within her.
While she may not look like much, Treyni is actually an elite
monster who watches over the Great Forest of Jura. She is capable
of handling most threats to the forest on her own, and she would
never rely on the strength of others for help.
A dire situation indeed, then.
"That's quite a demand, coming from someone who just waltzed in
out of nowhere, Treyni the Dryad, or so you call yourself," said the
red-haired one. Benimaru, I believe.
He seems upset that she was asking for help from goblins, one of
the weaker races. His suspicion is reasonable, but it is also mis-
placed.
Treyni is acting with great conviction. She understands that Rim-
uru is the strongest being in the forest. Dryads have special abilities
that allow them to maintain awareness of any location where there
is grass or trees. Therefore, they cannot be deceived within the
forest of Jura. A being of great magical energy was born within the
forest, so they would naturally be keeping tabs on him.
They also saw his battle with Benimaru's group—and Rimuru's
treatment of them afterward. It would be obvious from that con-
versation that Rimuru is a soft and sympathetic fellow. What better
pawn than one with both great power, and an inability to allow
others to suffer? This is why Treyni came straight to Rimuru.
If the orc lord attacks the treant settlement, the dryads alone would
be unable to stop him, she said. I have no doubt that she is sincere
in this regard, but her true intentions lie elsewhere.
She is testing Rimuru. After my disappearance, Jura has had no
protector. This latest disaster is a natural result. And now she is
hoping to choose a new protector, one who will ensure that such an
incident does not arise again.
In my case, I was not so much a diligent protector, but rather an
unholy terror to those I disliked. That did succeed in stabilizing the
forest—and to monsters, might makes right.
Such thoughts must certainly have been in the back of Treyni's
mind during the negotiations. To my surprise, Rimuru only offered
to consider her request. I had anticipated him accepting without a
second thought, but I was mistaken.
The presence of the orc lord is certain. Defeat him, and the problem
is solved. It seems simple enough to me. Then my strength would
be clear to all, and I would bask in their admiration. The perfect
plan.
But Rimuru is strangely cautious. Upon glancing through his
thoughts, I found that he was concerned about damage to his
townspeople. Hmph, quite a bother. He could handle the situation
on his own, but protecting the weak at the same time will naturally
limit his options.
This weight of responsibility is requisite for the showers of admira-
tion to come later—I suppose I must admit that I was oversimplify-
ing the matter. So what is he to do? I must be patient and see how
this meeting unfolds.
<2
“
The conversation moved to the orcs' goal—a rather tricky matter. It
seems that the biggest problem is the overall strength of their army,
numbering two hundred thousand.
The kijin named Hakuro said, "Indeed... They have no concept of
supply-line logistics."
Logistics? I have no concept of supply-line logistics!
"Ifrit, what is logistics?"
"I don't know, either. There are no ‘logistics’ in the rules to shogi,"
said Ifrit, holding the rules for shogi, which had quickly become his
favorite book.
Shogi is merely a game, of course. I cannot blame it for not contain-
ing this abstract concept. More interesting to me was Ifrit's fascina-
tion with the game. If I gave him a manual of battle strategy, would
he then turn into a master tactician? I decided to tap into Rimuru's
deep memory banks.
Now that I have become accustomed to manga and novels, finding
the text I seek is a simple matter.
My target: the dictionary.
Thankfully, Rimuru's memory is organized so neatly that I
promptly succeeded in finding the desired knowledge.
Lo-gis-tics (n.): the management and transportation of military person-
nel, weapons, and supplies behind a fighting force. Also, the acquisition
and maintenance of supply lines. The three primary elements of logistics
are supply, transport, and management. Logistical methods are broadly
divided into self-sufficiency, field procurement, and supply bases.
Ahh, yes, I see. My considerable wisdom has grown once again.
"Kwaaa ha ha ha! You have much to learn yet, Ifrit! Logistics is
defined as the management and transportation of..."
I repeated my new knowledge to Ifrit.
"B-brilliant! You are so wise, Master Veldora. I am stunned at the
depth of your knowledge and intelligence."
"No doubt you are, and rightly so. Read this, and you yourself may
scratch the surface of my intellect!"
"Oh, thank you. I will strive to follow your example, Master Vel-
dora!"
Iam pleased at Ifrit's earnest obedience. Now I have delegated all
of the boring and complex study to him, so that I might focus more
purely on entertainment.
<2
“e
The orcs' intentions have been revealed. It seems that they have the
unique skill "Starved," which they are using to steal the abilities of
a wide variety of races and species. Upon reflection, I do recall that
the previous orc lord had the same ability.
It was a human who vanquished that lord, for one very simple
reason. "Starved" can take the unique characteristics and skills of
monsters, but it cannot take arts gained through experience and
effort. In that sense, his focus on monsters is logical. He wants to
devour all the monsters in the forest and take control of it...
If he does, it will surely lead to the birth of a new demon lord. And
lurking behind the orc lord's efforts, there might be majin plotting
and sneaking about.
It is clear to me—the reek of danger and intrigue. Make your deci-
sion swiftly, Rimuru!
After all, if left unchecked, this situation could cause harm to those
who are meant to one day worship me! Stem the bleeding and stop
the orc lord before my reputation suffers further losses!!
But my lament did not reach Rimuru's ears. To my humiliation, it
was the purple-haired Shion who gave Rimuru encouragement.
"That piddling orc lord won't stand a chance against Lord Rimuru!"
she claimed.
1 agree!
At last, Rimuru seemed chagrined. "I'll take on this orc lord for
you. The rest of you, prepare yourselves for that," he proclaimed.
Orc lord, you are done for.
Isat back proudly, relieved that my town would be safe from harm
now.
@ FALSE SUPERIORITY @
What is that?! It is splendid!
Rimuru sits upon a most magnificent seat. Sure, it is strangely
shaped, but it is unfair that he should have all the glory for himself.
Is this what they call a divine palanquin?
Rimuru seems embarrassed by it, but I think it is perfect. When I
am fully recovered, I shall have one for myself.
Rimuru's group is busy preparing for battle. Ifrit is hard at work,
reading books on military strategy from writers of all places and
eras. And I have nothing to do.
Iam exceedingly bored.
"It is so boring, Ifrit."
"Not for me. Iam studying —"
"And bored. Yes?"
",..Yes. It is as you say, Master Veldora."
What a surprise! Ifrit was just as bored as me? He should have said
something. What an odd and reserved fellow.
"Kwaa ha ha ha! In that case, we ought to determine how you have
grown. What say you to another game?" I said, referring to shogi.
A pleased Ifrit rushed about, setting up the game. I seem to recall
that I had thrown up my hands and prevented the end of our last
game—lI was merely feeling under the weather that day.
What? "How can you be under the weather if there is no weather in
there"?
Don't be preposterous. Of course there is weather!
I would never lose otherwise, so logic would dictate that if I was
about to lose, it was because there was weather, and I was under it!
So this time I will attempt to challenge him for real.
S-something is wrong. Something is very wrong!
I started this game with all the confidence of a champion, but
things are proceeding very poorly for me.
"That is check, Master Veldora."
"Wh-what nonsense it this?!" I cried, and smoothly moved my gold
general to dispatch the encroaching knight.
How do you like that?! Now I have neutralized your—
"Then I'll just take your rook."
Gwaaaah!! Impossible! How is this possible?! My precious and
powerful rook, taken in an act of merciless cruelty by Ifrit's bishop!!
Curses! Curses!
I fell right into Ifrit's trap... It is not fair. Such sly and devious
trickery.
Ihave no choice. I was hoping not to need to do this...
"Ifrit, you have made admirable strides. Out of respect to you, I
shall show you my ultimate technique!" I cried, and flipped over
my king.
Written on it were the characters for "emperor."
"Wh-what is that...?” Ifrit gasped.
"Kwaaa ha ha ha!" I bellowed, pleased with myself. "This is the
true, final form of my king. An emperor is allowed to move twice!"
"Huh?! But there's no piece called...nothing in the rules that say..."
"You fool! Would one as proud and great as I bend the knee to
someone else's rules?!"
"—2!" Ifrit simply gaped, unable to hide his shock. And I cannot
blame him! It is the proper reaction to his contact with my noble
greatness.
"No, no," he stammered, "it could not be something so childish. It
just couldn't. No doubt Master Veldora has some very deep and
profound reason for it..."
"Yes. Hold your head high, Ifrit. Now begins the true match!" I
announced.
And thus my counterattack began.
@THE MARCH TO WAR®
The tables had turned, and much for the better.
Confident that the situation was in my favor, I decided to check
in on Rimuru. The last time I had seen him, he was wearing frilly,
many-layered clothes. I did not find them terribly beautiful. I prefer
bold and striking outfits, myself.
This time, he and the kijin were dressed in much better clothes.
Not only were they more pleasing to the eye, they were high in
defensive power too.
"Look at them, Ifrit. Is it fair for them to boast of such finery?"
"Hmm... No matter how I put you into check, you can escape with
two moves, so..."
"Are you listening to me?"
"Huh? Oh! Forgive me, Master. I was focused on the game."
Hah! He was so taken aback at my devastating momentum that he
didn't have time to look outside, either. But I cannot blame him—
my emperor piece is unstoppable.
As long as I have the emperor, I am undefeated. But enough about
that.
"You should learn from my example and be more cautious. See?
Rimuru and his cohorts have new equipment."
"Oh, you're right. They must have come from the dwarves and that
kijin named Kurobei. They've even improved their clothes in subtle
ways. Such a fascinating fellow, that Rimuru," Ifrit said, impressed.
I can see what makes him a higher-order elemental. His eye for
detail regarding their armor marks him as the sort worthy of fol-
lowing in the Demon Lord Leon's army.
"And what do you think? Can they tackle that vast army of orcs
with just their little group?" I asked deviously.
In fact, [had no doubt of Rimuru's victory. No collection of inferior
C-Rank and D-Rank monsters would bear a threat to a powerful
majin of A-Rank or higher, no matter how many of them there
were. By my estimation, those evolved kijin have an energy amount
that puts them beyond A-Rank. They cannot possibly be bested by
mere orcs.
So how will Ifrit respond? He has been reading those strategy
manuals I gave to him. If his way of thinking is stubbornly tied
down to numbers alone, he may not yet be worthy of the position
of my tactician...
"Lord Rimuru would be victorious, of course. What Treyni the
dryad is truly concerned about is the majin lurking behind this
threat. Even Demon Lord Leon has been vexed by their machina-
tions."
"Ohh?"
That Ifrit is sharper than I gave him credit for. Intrigued, I bade him
continue his explanation.
"In a sense, you can think of the orc army as a lure. Without your
presence in the forest, Master Veldora, these might be the move-
ments of people who would seize control of it for their own ends."
"Are you sure you're not overthinking this?"
"Perhaps. But it's quite within the realm of possibility, in my opin-
ion. I can certainly think of some demon lords who enjoy crafty
skullduggery of this sort," Ifrit admitted, his expression sour. I
could sense that he had undergone some bitter experiences when
he worked under Leon.
"Then if the orc army is nothing but a feint, you think they are
incapable of triumphing over Rimuru's squad?"
"That is correct. In terms of shogi, Lord Rimuru and his compan-
ions would be gold and silver generals, rooks, and bishops—all
powerful pieces. But the vast majority of the orc army are pawns.
Perhaps a handful of silver generals. Unless their king were to turn
into an ‘emperor,’ it is a war that Lord Rimuru cannot help but
win,’ Ifrit claimed.
In a sense, I agreed with him. But Ifrit, is that not a storytelling
"flag," as the terminology goes? In the novels that I read, it was
common for such overly-obvious developments to be flipped on
their heads...but I digress.
"You have learned much. Your explanation was very thorough," I
said.
"Thank you! I am honored, Master."
This Ifrit is going places, I sense. Rimuru has many followers, but I
have none. I never considered this to be a failing before this point,
but now it strikes me as a bit of a shame. It might be interesting to
continue honing Ifrit's mind and bring him on board as my strate-
gist.
"In that case, Master Veldora, may I ask for one thing?"
"Lam feeling generous. Ask away," I said magnanimously. A master
must distribute rewards as well.
"I would like to play another game with modified rules."
"Hmm?"
"Please allow me to use the 'emperor' piece, as you do."
"W-well..."
"Lam simply incapable of matching you as it is. 1 would appreciate
the opportunity to receive training in it."
"Ah, yes. Indeed..."
Damn it all! This has backfired spectacularly! However...
"Very well. I shall show you the ropes."
Escape is not an option for the great Veldora. For I have learned
something today: there is no defeat for an emperor. And neither is
there for me.
Never retreat! Never grovel! Never look back!! I will accept the
Ifrit's challenge!! There is no time to watch Rimuru leave for battle
now. This situation demands my complete attention.
Ifrit's gaze pains me. His reverence for me is obvious, a silent
pressure reminding me that I must live up to his expectations. As
he set about, preparing a new game, I was filled with a newfound
determination not to lose.
Just then, I glanced out at Rimuru.
"Very well said! You've recognized the greatness of Lord Rimuru.
You've got a good head on your shoulders," said Shion, Rimuru's
secretary, as she brought him more work.
Thad never considered it before, but perhaps Rimuru was feeing
the same sensation that I am right now. Being forced to live up to
the expectations of others can be such a weight upon the heart.
"When an ally is in trouble you rush to their aid, right?"
Simply incredible. On the inside, Rimuru was shaken by this, but
he showed no signs of it to the outside world. And in the mean-
time, I could not help but wonder: if he would do that for an ally,
why has he not yet saved me, his dearest friend?
@ RIPPLES ON THE BATTLEFIELD @
"Yeah, the lizardmen are in a bad spot. In a strategy game, this
is where you give up and reload your save," Rimuru muttered.
Remarkably enough, it was an accurate description of my own
situation.
"That is check, Master Veldora!"
Grrr. Ifrit knows no mercy in his brutal forays into my territory. It
is simply the height of unfairness that a king piece should move
twice. What moron decided to make that a rule?!
Elsewhere, Gabiru the lizardman was locked in a desperate duel.
But I had no attention to spare for him. I was too busy maneuver-
ing my pieces to stave off the Ifrit's fiendish attack.
Meanwhile, as though he had plenty of time to spare, Ifrit said,
"Look at that, Master Veldora. That man named Benimaru seems to
have inherited my flames."
Shut up! I do not have time for this nonsense!
But I will not deny a measure of curiosity, so I gave it a glance. As
Ifrit said, Benimaru was in the process of unleashing a devastating
skill.
"Ahh. He is also making use of my Black Flames. It seems this is
an advanced skill that Benimaru crafted himself, not one that just
anyone can wield."
"Indeed. At his energy level, it would be difficult to produce the
same amount of heat as I can. He would need to combine it with a
few different skills to create this effect."
That is correct. I suspect it is a combination of Ifrit's "Flame
Manipulation," my "Black Flames," and his own "Ogre Flames."
In addition, he is utilizing a space-limiting skill. All in all, a very
impressive display.
Answer: Correct. That is the wide-range conflagration attack "Hell Flare,”
developed by the individual named Benimaru.
"Hell Flare," eh? It will have no effect on me or Ifrit, but your aver-
age monster will not stand a chance against it. The kijin named
Benimaru is tremendously advanced to make such a skill his own.
Now it seems Gobta has gone to assist that Gabiru fellow. Gabiru
might be a clown, but he's displayed manly valor by taking a blow
for his followers. Rimuru doesn't want to simply abandon him, and
I agree with that sentiment.
Gobta might not be much, but he has Ranga with him. The orcs
don't stand a chance.
The battle is reaching its climax.
Normally this is where I would watch with delight. But now my
heart is heavy. Surely I need not elaborate on the reason...
I glanced down at the board, where my defeat was writ large.
There is no other choice. Now is the time for me to re-allot the men-
tal resources spent on "Inquiring" my imprisonment seal to find the
formula that will guide me to victory!
Warning: Usage denied.
Wha—?!
Curse you, Rimuru. You saw my attempt coming?!
Tam willing to undo my prison later if it will mean winning this
contest. But Rimuru does not seem to want this outcome. I won't
deny that I would like to be returned to power soon, but...
But a dragon cannot be a loser.
Answer: You have earned this outcome. You altered the established and
accepted rules of shogi for your own selfish purposes. You ought to have
been satisfied with the legal advantage of first move instead.
I've been scolded. Why, it seems that Rimuru is furious that I
changed the rules.
Still, I want to win.
Dignity? I would rather have victory. I have lived a long, long time,
and I may never have been more fixated on a victory than this one.
It's not like I have never tasted defeat. As with my battle against
the hero, when I knew I did not stand a chance, I abandoned my
struggle. The dragons are unstoppable; if we die, we eventually
return to life.
But shogi is different. And not just shogi—all the games contained
within Rimuru's mind. The contestants engage in competition on
equal footing, no matter their backgrounds.
In this game, I have engaged perhaps too deeply. My desire to
avoid defeat led me to cheat, which my opponent has now utilized
back against me. Rimuru is correct: I have earned this.
Regardless, I have decided that the best way for me to make up for
my mistake is to win anyway.
—At last, Rimuru heard my plea.
Suggestion: Utilize proxy calculation? YES/NO
I could sense a kind of exasperated resignation from the offer,
which I happily accepted.
I knew that Rimuru was my friend.
@DEATH STORM @
The showdown between me and the Ifrit is reaching a pitched
finale. Meanwhile, Rimuru's followers are closing in on a conclu-
sion to their battle.
Most eye-catching of them all is Benimaru, with his "Hell Flare"
ability. Also impressive is Rimuru's pet, the wolf Ranga. He sum-
moned several whirlwinds that shoot bolts of electricity as they
carve through the orcs.
Is that a combination of the Extra Skill "Wind Manipulation" and
my "Black Lightning"?
Answer: It is the area attack technique "Death Storm” developed by the
individual named Ranga.
"Death Storm," then. It reminds me of an inferior version of my
"Storm of Destruction." Perhaps because he hides in Rimuru's
shadow, and basks in his magicules? It is a rather strange evolu-
tionary path he has taken.
Ranga's current species is Tempest Star Wolf. Frankly, it is a mighty
beast. Anyone utilizing such a powerful area attack is easily over
A-Rank. Such wide-range, tactically decisive attacks consume a
tremendous amount of energy. This is the wall that must be scaled
to transcend the A-Rank tier.
It is exceedingly difficult to reach these heights, but the rewards are
great. Like Benimaru and Ranga, tremendous powers come along
with it. But without a proper level of skill and experience, such
riches are wasted.
The majin mentioned in Rimuru's earlier strategy meeting would
likely be A-Rank as well. Anyone called a majin is a worthy foe, so
you can bet they will be at least at this level.
As for me? I am special, of course. Ifrit has much going for him as
well, too. Only the elite officers of the demon lords would be his
equal.
Rimuru might be intelligent, but he is unlearned in this regard. He
is overly cautious, not realizing that the orc lord is not truly such
a fearsome enemy. If he truly enlisted all of those thousands and
thousands of orcs, that might speak to a certain greatness...but I do
not doubt Rimuru's coming victory in the least.
The real problem will be the number of orcs. 200,000 will mean
a considerable expenditure of stamina before we even reach the
important ones.
But with the hard work of those following Rimuru to clear the
way...
It has been planned out, I'm sure. Rimuru is floating up in the sky,
and even making time to give me advice. He's got this all worked
out.
I must give up and admit that in these situations, I am no match for
him.
Benimaru, Ranga, Hakuro, Shion. Even the scrambling of little
Gobta has succeeded in tilting the battle to Rimuru's favor. At
this rate, the Orc Lord does himself no favors by standing back to
watch.
In the meantime, my battle against Ifrit is also nearing its conclu-
sion.
"It c-can't be... At this rate..."
Ifrit is panicking. I do not blame him. I can scarcely believe it
myself.
Next move will be check.
I carelessly set my pieces, guiding and luring Ifrit's emperor into
the corner...where two lances and my rook have it trapped.
The key to all of this: the weakest piece of all, the one I had never
taken seriously.
A pawn.
"This is check, Ifrit."
At Rimuru's advice, I moved my pawn one square forward. My
infiltration into enemy territory was complete. I flipped the piece
over, making it a promoted pawn.
"Impossible..."
Even with two moves, his emperor has no escape.
"That is checkmate! I am victorious," I declared.
"I... give," [frit said, stunned. "Even under these circumstances,
victory is impossible for me... Master Veldora, you did this to teach
me the importance of never giving up, didn't you?"
What?
It seems Ifrit has misunderstood our competition in a rather com-
plimentary way. I must take advantage of this.
"That is indeed correct."
"I should have known... Iam ashamed of my own shallowness.
No matter what, I will never give up, and swear to always pursue
victory to the bitter end!"
What a melodramatic fellow. Still, I cannot deny that this was a
fortunate conclusion to the game.
"That is what I wanted to hear from you. It was worth enacting that
preposterous rule to teach you this. We no longer have any need
for the emperor piece."
"I didn't realize that's what you intended," Ifrit said, impressed.
Very good. I have completely fooled him, and now Ifrit has even
more respect for me than before. All is well.
Once again, it all comes back to Rimuru.
He impresses me every time, and this is no exception. Even out-
side, the battle's triumph is nigh.
And then...
Hmm?
Is there still some trouble to address?
Rimuru is looking ahead to the orc lord, who seems rather insig-
nificant to me...
Is it possible that, like my own promoted pawn, the orc lord has
jumped in stature?!
No, Iam merely overthinking it. But one never knows what might
happen on the battlefield.
And as a wise master himself, Rimuru would never let his guard
down for this reason.
Very well. I must witness the conclusion of this great battle!

Deep in Scotland Yard in London sits an evidence room dedicated to the greatest
mysteries of Briush history. In this “Black Museum” sits a misshapen hunk of
lead—two bullets fused together—the key to a wartime encounter between Florence
Nightingale, the mother of modern nursing, and a supernatural Man in Grey. ‘This
story is unknown to most scholars of history, but a special guest of the museum will
tell the tale of The Ghost and the Lady...
