Veldora's Slime Observation Journal
~PLOTTING~
@ MILIM THE WHIRLWIND (PART 2)
Ifrit and I are friends now. We've grown closer than ever be-
fore, so there is no longer any need to hold back! Therefore, I
took it upon myself to train [frit to the limit of his ability.
"No, wait a moment. That doesn't make any sense. You never
held back about anything before, Master Veldora. In fact, you
could stand to go easy on me..."
"Hrmm. But I have been going very easy on you."
"Well, I can't. I just can't. Besides, it doesn't add up. If
your powers are sealed, how is it that you are so absurdly
strong?!"
So this is the response I get for trying to heighten Ifrit's skills.
I fleshed out my Veldora-style Killing Arts, and was going to
help Ifrit to master them, but apparently, I was rushing too
quickly.
Oopsy-daisy. I got a bit carried away.
"Kwaaa ha ha ha! Do not sweat the little details! I was merely
so pleased that I exerted more force than was necessary. You
have my permission to be magnanimous and forgive my
transgression, frit!"
Magicules do not disperse in this closed world. It makes the
use of power surprisingly easy and effective. Even in my
human form created by pure thought, my energy density is
higher than Ifrit's.
For one thing, my power is simply too vast. Even holding
back as I am, it is still too much for Ifrit—not that I mean to
brag. However, there is still more to be done, so I shall have
to ask him to look forward to my future growth.
"Sure, sure. There's no point worrying about it, and it's not
like you've ever done things differently. Yes, I forgive you,
Master Veldora," said Ifrit, shrugging in resignation.
He seems to understand that everyone fails at times, and
there is no use in letting it bother you. It is a good sign of
progress, I feel.
"Um, you really shouldn't just interpret things however they
suit you best—"
"Kwaaa ha ha ha ha!" I laughed, drowning out Ifrit's com-
plaint.
Even now that we are friends, Ifrit's tone of voice is quite
deferential.
"Since we are now friends, why the need to be so reserved?"
"It must be so. This dictionary includes the phrase, 'Even
between friends there must be respect."
Ifrit is so stubborn. Why, he is the stubbornest stub who ever
stubbed. In fact, this is the very reason that I act so casually
around him; to soften his rigidity. Indeed, it is for his own
sake...
"Like I said, please stop rationalizing your own actions that
way.
"Er, fine."
He scolded me. Not only is he stubborn, [frit is also too strict
by half. In comparison, Rimuru is positively flexible. He was
afraid of me at first, but soon came to change his mind.
Thinking on it now, Rimuru has always been special in that
way. frit could stand to learn a thing or two from Rimuru—
although on second thought, he need not be that bold.
Rimuru will happily steal my magicules for his own ends,
and I do not wish for [frit to feel the same license. It began to
occur to me that perhaps the current state of our friendship is
for the best after all.
At any rate, Ifrit and I grow ever closer.
Meanwhile, Milim has been getting familiar with the land of
monsters. And it took only half a day—though I suppose it
isn't my place to speak on this. Now she cavorts around with
Rimuru as if she owns the place.
It is lunch hour, and they are dining upon the mysterious
food known as "curry." It is an otherworld food that Rimuru
recreated after much trial and error. Between the leaves, nuts,
and seeds, I was certain he was gathering catalysts for some
magical curse—but this simple dish was the result.
The crop known as "rice" was the result of much frantic
searching on the part of Rimuru. He finds it a far cry from
the taste of his home, but the monsters do appear to enjoy
it. They say it has a tantalizing smell, and its rich spiciness
is addicting. The addition of fruit juice can even increase the
sweetness to make it palatable to children.
Milim enjoys it as well. "Mmmm!!" she says, as she digs into
i
Tam so very jealous. "I wish that I could eat it, too."
"It's not possible. And I thought you didn't need food in the
first place, Master Veldora."
Ifrit is correct, of course, but that does not mean I don't wish
to eat. Just watching the delight with which Milim gobbles it
up makes my mouth water.
Of course, one must not forget about the honey. That was the
item Rimuru used to tame Milim, and it looks simply delec-
table. They say it is sweet. What is that like? Even Benimaru
seems shocked by it. I am certain it must be quite delightful.
Iam also curious about the thing they call sugar. Appar-
ently, the stalks and roots of certain plants can be pressed,
boiled, concentrated, and then dried out into a solid matter
of refined sweetness. In short, extracting the sweetness of the
plant itself.
I learned from books that this substance was called sugar. As
Shuna says, it is quite valuable, a rare treat that only the very
rich or noble can partake in.
But Rimuru's idea is to refine this sugar even further, into
greater heights of sweetness.
Fascinating.
You see, knowledge is useless if simply hoarded. Only
through personal experience can that knowledge be con-
verted to useful wisdom. The breadth of my knowledge is
vast, but I must admit that my ability to make effective use of
it was poor. I shall have to focus more on how to utilize what
I know.
In comparison, Shuna and her cohorts are very active and
true to their desires. They have formed something they call a
Sweet Tooth Alliance.
Milim's role is to eat, it seems—but that should be my role.
When I am revived at last, I shall devour all of the sweets in
sight!
"You're really that obsessed with them? Even though you
don't need to eat?"
"Of course I am. I have never had any interest in eating until
now. But it is not because I did not need to eat."
" OM
"It is because I did not know that eating could bring happi-
ness. I did not know that stimulation of the taste buds could
be an enjoyable thing!"
"I see..."
"And now that I know of it, is it not natural for me to wish to
experience it?"
"I suppose so. It does make sense. Sadly, I have no sense of
taste, so | admit the concept does not click for me."
Ah, yes. Indeed. [frit is a spiritual being, and does not pos-
sess a physical body. No wonder he does not possess the
desire to consume.
"Have no fear. On the day that I am brought back to my full
greatness, I will see that you are revived as well!"
Rimuru will help... Surely Rimuru will make this right. I
have full trust in him, and told Ifrit the same.
"You will?"
"Indeed! I will arrange a body of flesh for you. Then you, too,
will be able to experience the pleasure of eating."
"Oh... I will await this without expectations. But if it does
indeed happen, then I pledge an oath to serve you faithfully
to the best of my ability."
Hrmm. That was not quite the enthusiastic response I ex-
pected.
Aha. I think I know what it is. Is he feeling shy? He must be
feeling bashful about my generous and friendly offer. Heh
heh heh, the little scamp. Don't worry, I do not break my
promises. I will have to rely upon Rimuru to do it, of course,
but I shall prepare [frit a body of his own—this I swore to
myself.
However, I was completely unaware that [frit was in fact
thinking, Knowing Master Veldora, the instant he revives, he'll
forget all about me and become interested in something else. If I’m
lucky, he'll remember me for a brief moment a few years later...
Moving on from all of that, Milim found acceptance among
Rimuru's town. But that was merely the catalyst of the next
problem.
Despite her appearance, she is a demon lord. It is inevitable
that if she gets along with Rimuru, the other demon lords
will be forced to pay attention.
"If Lord Rimuru is defeated, our fate is likewise sealed."
"True. He is standing out more than I expected, so this is
perhaps no laughing matter."
Things will happen as they may. Both Ifrit and I are fully
aware of the stakes.
"Ifrit, | wish to ask you something."
"What is it?”
"How many demon lords are there, aside from your old
master, Leon?"
I hear of the demon lords so often these days, but I do not
fully understand them.
The ones that I am thinking of—giant, vampiress, and so
on—were demon lords, if I recall correctly. There must be
many of them around in the world these days...
"Good question. As far as Iam aware, Demon Lord Leon is
the newest of them. There was another demon lord who was
hostile to him, and an expert in very insidious and treacher-
ous strategies."
"T see.”
"There was another lord with unfathomable power, and one
who was the cause of my meeting with Demon Lord Leon.
Two more ruled over the rich and vast lands far to the south
of the Great Forest of Jura. And lastly, Demon Lord Milim.
That is all that I know of."
Ah-hah.
Regarding the demon lord with the "unfathomable power,"
I may know of whom he speaks. If I am correct, that makes
this demon lord a foe so powerful that even I had never at-
tempted direct conflict. But these other demon lords, I feel do
not match the ones I am thinking of. Leon is newly arrived,
and unfamiliar to me. And I am not knowledgeable of some
insidious rival demon lord of his, either.
Are the two who rule over the fertile lands the giant and
vampiress? The vampiress moved strongholds, and I do not
know where she dwells now. And I believe the giant was in
the desert to the west, controlling the "Barren Land" and its
many sandstorms.
"Do you know how many there are in total?"
"I believe they are called the "Ten Great Demon Lords,’ so that
would suggest that it is no more than ten."
"Ah-hah. I see."
Ten of them. No wonder that does not match my memory of
the demon lords. Ifrit mentioned seven that he knew, plus the
two that were only in my recollection. The last is unknown to
me directly, but I do recall hearing tales of some slothful de-
mon lord. One who had no territory or castle to control and
was wandering freely during the time when I was sealed. I
doubt whoever that is has changed their nature.
So it seems there are several I am unaware of, and it is quite
likely that any demon lord who might antagonize Rimuru is
a newer one.
If my old sparring friends make an appearance, Rimuru does
not stand a chance. But a brand new demon lord, depending
on the circumstances, might actually be a fair fight for him.
And then there is Milim.
"If we're going to antagonize any demon lords, better that
she be on our side. Demon Lord Milim is categorized as a
Catastrophe for a reason," said Soei, with great wisdom. I
completely agree.
There is no hope of defeating Milim, but there may be ways
to fight other demon lords. And now that Milim has aligned
herself with him, it is very unlikely that any of them would
attack the town.
"It does not seem that we will have to worry about other
demon lords."
"L agree, Master. I do not think that Demon Lord Leon would
attempt to fight Milim. We cannot be too overconfident, but
for now, I think we can rest easy."
In other words, both Ifrit and I were assured that there would
be no imminent threat.
At the meeting, it was decided that Rimuru would be respon-
sible for watching over Milim.
It makes sense. Rimuru is quite adept at handling children.
In fact, he seems to have her in the palm of his hand. What
better caretaker could there be?
"You would know best, Master Veldora."
Huh?
"Wait, frit. What do you mean by that?" I asked, unable to
help myself.
He put on a sly expression. "Well, watching Demon Lord
Milim, I see the resemblance to you. Is she a blood relation?
The way that he has tamed her with food makes me think
that you, too, will one day fall prey to—"
"D-do not be ridiculous! I am too intelligent to ever fall to
such cheap manipulations!"
Such rudeness. Such rudeness, indeed.
But...he does have a point. I cannot deny that I have been
fascinated by the foods that Rimuru prepares. But that does
not mean we are the same. Milim might have been easy to
tame, but I am different!
",..Sure. Let's go with that for now."
Ifrit...that response seemed very skeptical to me.
But if he doubts me, then I shall show him my regal great-
ness when I am revived. Then he will surely see the error of
his ways, and come to appreciate my splendor!
Kwaaaa ha ha ha ha!
The next day, Milim received a number of different outfits
from Rimuru, much to her delight. I am jealous. Oh, how
jealous I am.
"T have decided, Ifrit."
"What is it this time?”
I cannot help but feel that his replies are getting sloppier by
the day. But...no, it must be my imagination. Certainly, just a
trick of the mind.
"Heh heh heh. When I am revived, I think that I shall take
human form."
"Ohhh, really."
Did his tone of voice suggest that he was less than thrilled?
No. No, it couldn't be.
"Yes, really. And if I did, what do you suppose would hap-
pen?" I asked.
Ifrit was silent for a time, until he seemed to realize some-
thing, and opened his eyes.
"Yes, I see!" he said passionately. "In dragon form, you would
instill terror in the various monsters of the town, if not Lord
Rimuru himself. But by taking human form, you would
maintain the peace and leave the buildings unharmed. I'm
impressed, Master Veldora! This is a wonderful idea that
shows true care for those weaker than yourself!"
"Huh?!"
T haven't felt this kind of respect from Ifrit in a long time. But
that was not my idea. I was just thinking that I would get my
own clothes designed for me by Rimuru, that was all. Yet I
cannot dash cold water upon his enthusiasm.
"It is true. And only a true friend would intuit my intentions
so accurately."
"Ha ha! I knew you were a great and kindhearted soul, Master
Veldoral"
Yes. Yes, lam great, indeed.
But...did he have to sound as though he were doubting this
about me? Surely this was obvious from the start. The idea is
somewhat upsetting, but I will overlook it. Thanks to Ifrit's
mista—er, recognition of my greatness, I will not speak of
this.
And most importantly, I will not speak of my true intentions,
which were that if I emerged in naked human form, Rimuru
would have no choice but to give me clothes.
Now, while Ifrit and I may have been enjoying our time in
relative peace, that did not last forever.
A huge pillar of roaring flame disturbed the pleasant mood.
All I could do was sigh. The compliments had been about to
come rolling in, too. I could feel it.
@ THE DEMON LORDS' PLOT
'
"Master Veldora, I sense the approach of a powerful majin..'
"Indeed. This aura is greater than yours, in fact."
"That is true. In terms of energy, this one is higher."
Kwaaa ha ha ha. You've really grown a sassy mouth, haven't
you, Ifrit?
Strength is not measured solely on magical energy, as now
that [frit has learned that lesson, he no longer panics in the
face of higher energy alone.
For one thing, this majin has picked the wrong fight. This is
the town of the tyrant Rimuru. Case in point: witness Rimuru
approaching and asking after the commotion while a bat-
tered majin lies crushed upon the ground.
"Ah! Rimuru! He was being extremely rude, so I gave him a
good and proper spanking," said Milim proudly.
There, you see?
Of the greater majin, this fellow was surely among the top,
and this was all he could do against Milim.
I would have assumed she'd be congratulated for her good
work, but I was mistaken. Rimuru does not seem happy that
Milim was exercising violence.
"Hrmm. I feel that I would have done the same..."
"L agree that you would. But Lord Rimuru is in the right."
"Why?"
"That majin claimed to be a follower of Demon Lord Carrion.
He is something of an envoy, if you will. Injuring such a man
would certainly be taken as a hostile stance toward Lord
Carrion."
I understand now. Ifrit is so good at explaining things.
As it happens, Soei agreed, and Rimuru backed him up.
"Ahh. I shall have to be more careful about this."
"That is a very good attitude that you should never forget!"
Hmm?! Why do I feel that Ifrit is being more caustic than
normal? I feel a tiny bit hurt, even. But my own heartbreak
aside, Rimuru and the others engaged in a meeting of the
minds.
The name of this majin visitor is Phobio, apparently. Phobio
mocks Rimuru for being a simple slime. Given this reaction,
we can Safely say that our first impression of him was correct.
He is no match for Rimuru.
The problem is Phobio's master. As the previous conversation
mentioned, he works for Demon Lord Carrion.
"So, Ifrit, do you know of this Demon Lord Carrion?"
"Only that he is comparatively young, and is known as the
Beastmaster..."
Hmm. Beastmaster. King of the Beasts? Is he from the king-
dom of lycanthropes to the south of the Jura Forest, then?
If memory serves, that place is the Animal Kingdom of Eura-
zania. Because it is a country whose warriors are comparable
to higher majin, it is certainly not unthinkable that an indi-
vidual from there would rise to the class of demon lord seed.
Given my imprisonment, my feed of information has been re-
stricted. Surely this Carrion must have come to power in the
last few centuries. In which case, he still cannot defeat Milim.
I relaxed, certain that we were safe. And Rimuru had a very
accurate read on the balance of power. He wants to negotiate
with Carrion using their own innate strength as collateral,
rather than leveraging Milim's power.
I must admit that he is most stout in his bearing. Phobio is
not entirely stupid, either, and seems to be taking Rimuru's
statement at face value.
Despite the displeasure on both sides, the negotiation was
proceeding —until Milim came to muck things up. As soon
as she finished eating her lunch, she threatened Phobio, "If
you talk down to my friend, you'll really be in for a world of
hurt—"
"The next time you do something, I'll take your dinner away.
And I mean that this time, Milim."
She should have stayed put, but she just doesn't learn. And
on that note, [had to remind myself: do not interrupt Rimuru
when he is in one of his serious moods.
"What do you think, Ifrit? Does my conclusion not burst with
wisdom?"
"The idea of calling it 'wisdom' is appalling, but I do accept it
as the right decision."
Ifrit can be so strict. It feels as though he is less and less
concerned with softening his words around me. But thanks
to that, his growth is pleasing.
A spiritual being's mental strength is directly tied to its actual
strength. Ifrit's power at this moment is far beyond when he
lost to Rimuru, I dare say. Ergo, his responses are evidence
that my sagacious guidance has been of help to him.
"Keep up the stellar work!"
"hy, Fehites...
I left the dumbfounded Ifrit behind and returned my at-
tention to Rimuru's conversation. He had just put a stop to
Milim's rampage earlier, and now the meeting has come to a
successful conclusion. Phobio has his message to take back to
Demon Lord Carrion.
Carrion believes he can recruit Rimuru's forces, so a direct
clash would be beside the point. If all goes well, they might
enter some kind of negotiation with Carrion, but...
I can sense that Phobio harbors a deep resentment within
him. And the target of his rage is not Rimuru—but Milim.
Hatred? No, that is not all of it. I think that Phobio is fooled
by Milim's appearance. As Phobio took his leave of the city, I
could not help but lament at how small of heart he truly is.
After that, Rimuru placated Milim with some new toys, and
learned what he wanted from her. It is really quite stunning
to watch him manipulate her the way he does. I must learn
from his example.
"I believe it is time for you to advance to the next stage, Ifrit."
"What in the world have you come up with this time?" Ifrit
replied, unmoved.
"That's the spirit. Always be inquisitive!"
"Um, can you just answer my question?"
"Kwaaaa ha ha ha! Through discipline, I will elevate your
mind to even greater heights. You will not turn out as petty
and small-minded as Phobio!"
"Huh? Wait, I don't know what you..."
"No more questions! Prepare yourself!"
This was the start of my grand "Ifrit Raising Project."
¢ VISITORS TO THE LAND OF MONSTERS @
While Rimuru tempted Demon Lord Milim with the wonders
of the land of Tempest, Ifrit and I proceeded down the path
of battle.
"No, Master Veldora, only you are doing that. Please wait, I
need a short break—"
Ifrit is bursting with spirit and ambition. I wish to do right by
his enthusiasm.
"Are you listening to me?! You can't just walk over my pro-
testatio—gwuah!”
T unleashed my aura without waiting for Ifrit to finish his
sentence. The magicule density of the space we are in became
even denser. This put enormous stress on Ifrit, as a spiritual
being.
The majority of monsters under A-rank would be unable to
bear this. Any human being would instantly perish.
"Gwaaaaah?1" Ifrit roared, trying desperately to resist.
"That's the spirit," I said kindly. "That's the spirit, Ifrit."
"M-my existence is vanishing...I will soon collapse and dis-
sipaaate!!"
Ah, very good.
The stress is building up well. This strain upon his being is
what will make [frit much tougher. And knowing how Ifrit is
already mentally strong enough to talk back to me, it should
be a sign that his existence is more powerful than before,
giving him higher maximum energy and making him able to
withstand my aura.
"There is a lot of weight...riding on the word 'should' in that
statement!!"
"Well, you seem to be handling it with aplomb, Ifrit. Very
well. I am pleased by your strength of mind!"
I will admit that Iam very proud of how he withstands my
power. That is what I like to see in my very good friend. And
as I admired him, I upped the amount of aura I was expend-
ing.
A few days passed like this.
Ifrit is a very hardy being. As I expected, he has adapted to a
high-density magical environment.
"There, you see?"
"...Well, I must admit that you were right, Master Veldora."
Of course I was. I am never wrong about anything.
"However! I wish you would have at least talked to me about
it before you started!"
Hmm?! Ifrit just scolded me with a ferocity I'm not accus-
tomed to hearing. On the other hand, I suppose that he was
in a temporary state of great danger, and on the brink of
complete oblivion. If I had not been careful, I could've been
responsible for the destruction of my conversation partner
and friend, Ifrit.
Whoopsie. Well, everyone makes mistakes now and then.
"That is a lot more than just a 'whoopsie'!"
"S-SOITY."
That was rather rude of Ifrit to read my mind like that. But
I did feel that I was at fault, so it seemed appropriate to
apologize.
Once Ifrit's anger cooled, we turned our attention to the
outside world.
Just then, new visitors had come to see Rimuru. I recognized
three faces—the rather friendly adventurers we met earlier.
But who are the others?
Gobta brought them in. They were not monsters, but hu-
mans. They didn't seem to be here for the purpose of defeat-
ing monsters, which only made the question of their arrival
more curious.
"My name is Fuze. I am the guildmaster of the Kingdom of
Blumund."
Ahh, an important fellow. So he's come here to find out if
Rimuru is dangerous, or more specifically, if he poses a threat
to humanity.
Fuze seems quite surprised by Vesta's presence. Vesta had
been a senior minister at the dwarven kingdom, which
earned him a reputation in neighboring lands. No wonder
the man is surprised, then. No one would expect the former
minister of a dwarven nation to be working in a town of
monsters.
It was not Fuze, but some fresh-faced youngster who then
said, "How is it that a slime can talk?"
A very astute observation. I had questioned the same thing
myself. Now, I do not bother myself with the small details,
but I suppose those of a small nature cannot help themselves.
Ihave never seen a talking slime besides Rimuru. In fact,
a slime with its own intelligence and will is essentially un-
heard of. This man's question is a perfectly reasonable one.
However...what he did next was a mistake.
Not only did he insult my friend Rimuru, he also turned on
Shion and said, "I wasn't talkin' to you, fun bags!"
Now, you didn't hear this from me, but of all of Rimuru's
followers, Shion has the shortest temper. She would not take
this insult lying down.
In the next moment, before anyone could intercede, her blow
caught him directly on the head.
That was not a surprise to me. Of course it happened. But...
that mention of her breasts.
"Ifrit, I have a question..."
"What is it?”
"Why is it that Rimuru seems to find breasts so enchanting?"
"I'm afraid I do not know."
"Hmmm. Perhaps if we were to study the actual phenom-
enon, we might understand more about them?"
"Perhaps...my bodily host, Shizue Izawa, was equipped with
them, but they were only a hindrance during battle. They
also seemed to give her shoulder and back pain, so I do not
think they were very beneficial."
"Is that so? Did they at least serve as a kind of armor to pro-
tect the chest?"
"Not at all."
Ah, I see. They do not seem to have a practical use, then.
Ifrit seems to think that not having breasts is better. Perhaps
it would be amusing to give them to him, then.
When | am revived for good, and it comes time to give Ifrit a
body, I shall remember to make his feminine. Then I will be
able to study breasts all that I like without needing to bother
anyone.
Kwa ha ha ha! This will be fun!
"Master Veldora, why do I get the feeling that you were just
plotting something absolutely unacceptable?"
"I-I haven't the foggiest idea what you mean!"
I was forced to distract Ifrit from his keen hunch by focusing
our attention on the outside once more.
Upon seeing Shion feeling chastised, Milim laughed, "You're
much too quick-tempered, Shion!"
I would think that of all people to make that observation,
you should be the last. Believe it or not, my own patience is
extraordinarily long. Sometimes I can get carried away, but it
is always with the benefit of careful thinking behind it.
I think that Shion and Milim lack self-control. And if I had
to guess, Rimuru feels the same way that I do. Then, to my
surprise, Rimuru announced his intention to turn this man
Youm into a champion. What in the world has he got in mind
this time?
I could not wait to find out the answer.
@ YOUM: FROM CHUMP TO CHAMP @
Youm is hesitant.
But of course he is. How else can one respond to the idea of
becoming a champion of justice?
I do not know what Rimuru has in mind, either. It seems his
plan is to give Youm the public credit for vanquishing the
dreaded Orc Lord. But what does he stand to gain by doing
this...?
"What do you suppose Lord Rimuru is thinking?" Ifrit asked.
"I do not know. Even one as wise as I is ill-equipped to read
Rimuru's thoughts."
We were confused at first, but when Rimuru explained, it all
made sense.
Announcing that the Orc Lord was defeated by another
monster would not solve the problem from the humans'
perspective; to them, it would simply mean another monster
took over in place of the first. But if Youm is introduced as
the human champion who defeated the beast, his fellows will
accept the news with great fanfare.
This will also allow Youm to be a bridge between the two
sides—someone who can help convince the humans of the
existence of friendly, harmless monsters.
"Ah, yes. Rather than enjoy the temporary superiority of pro-
claiming one's great deed, allow another to take it and reap
lasting, practical gains from it."
"It is exceedingly clever, and seems to derive from knowl-
edge of the human mind. Lord Rimuru does seem to be
honestly dedicated to peace with the humans, doesn't he?"
said Ifrit.
"Indeed. His end goal is simply to live in peace and luxury.
Petty squabbling only impedes this goal, so he prioritizes
gaining trust instead."
"So you are saying that trust is more important than force of
arms. It does not seem to match the attitude of ‘survival of
the fittest’ typical to monsters."
I understand Rimuru's logic now. And none of his followers
appear to have any objections to this. That, too, surprises me.
Benimaru, Soei, and Shion. These three alone represent
enough power to bring down one of the smaller nations bor-
dering the Great Forest of Jura. And yet...
Even the mighty, short-tempered Shion does not insist on
exerting diplomatic pressure through military strength. That,
above all else, would suggest to me that the monsters who
follow Rimuru's lead all understand his way of thinking.
And the man named Fuze understands their desires as well.
He has signed on to Rimuru's plan. The entire apparatus is
moving onward, leaving the actual central figure of Youm
behind.
Youm seems troubled by it, but unable to give a direct an-
swer yet. He doesn't feel that playing hero suits him.
Then Milim said, "No. Not a hero. Heroes are a special kind
of being, just like demon lords."
She is correct. Apparently Milim can be considerate when
she wants. If he called himself a "hero" without being careful,
there could be very monumental consequences. It would get
him involved with some demon lord or another, and tangle
him up in larger strands of fate.
And of course, if he were not up to the rigors of that role, he
would not be long for this world.
Thankfully, Milim laid out all of this information for me.
Rimuru seemed unaware of it himself, so I am grateful to her
for doing so.
And yet...
"Whadda you want, kid? The adults are talki—"
He just had to be stupid enough to talk back to Milim. I
suppose he deserved a good punch. Milim might be short-
tempered, but he earned that one. Even Rimuru didn't seem
to be that angry. But appearances are important, so he did
scold Milim in Youm's presence.
If only, like me, Milim took care not to be scolded—
Warning: Severe decline in work efficiency detected.
Yikes!
It is highly suggested that you focus seriously on your work.
Well, I've just been scolded.
I'd been diverting small bits of my unique skill Inquirer,
which was busy analyzing my Unlimited Imprisonment
cage, for my own selfish purposes...and it seems the jig is up.
In fact, I believe I've been spending all my time recently hav-
ing fun with Ifrit. That was careless of me. A very careless,
very silly mistake.
But I have an argument of my own to make. With the way
Rimuru drains my energy for his own ends, interfering
with my work, surely I can be allowed a bit of free time for
myself...
Question: Whom does this work benefit?
My argument shattered in an instant.
I should have known I could not stand up to Rimuru. Very
well.
"Forgive me, Ifrit. I will be devoting my sole attention to
undoing the seal for a while."
Correction: Not for a while. Until it is done.
Hrrg.
I even have tears in my eyes.
But while I gnash my teeth, Rimuru's conversation reaches
its conclusion. Somehow, even he is able to take the time to
do his regular daily checks. And if Rimuru is working, then I
must do so as well.
Under Ifrit's watchful eye, I diligently resumed my work.
Huh?!
I was analyzing for so long that several days have passed
already.
Correction: Only several days have passed.
You are too hard on me, Rimuru.
In fact, is that really you, Rimuru?
I'm beginning to have my suspicions...
Hmph. I cannot imagine it is anyone but Rimuru. I wish that
he would treat his ally and friend with more care than this. I
need a breather now and then, and Ifrit must be very bored
without me.
I can see now that Youm is on board with Rimuru's project
to turn Youm into a champion. And on the other end, I am in
the midst of my "Ifrit Raising Project."
Surely I can be allowed a bit of slack.
... Understood. Will you activate the Ifrit Raising Project?
YES/NO
Umm...?
Y-you mean I don't get to do it?
Warning: Declining progress has been detected.
Hrrrrgh.
Thate to admit it, but it is true that I have been slacking too
much. I ought to continue my hard work before Rimuru gets
any more cross with me.
And so, with great regret, I put Rimuru's requested "Ifrit
Raising Project" on hold, and returned to the boring work of
undoing the magical seal placed upon me.
